Well, I searched, and the last thread on this topic was from 2013, and there wasn’t a heck of a lot of info and actual experience with the aftermarket ignitions for the yz250’s so I am asking again, does anyone have any real world experience with a vortex or jd ignition box for the yz250, or is there a difference between the maps of the vortex, and Tokyo mods vortex cdi box. I did use a black-ops racing coil pack on my 06 yz250, but didn’t really feel it did much, but it may have been that I needed to extend my plug gap from 0.8 to 0.9mm to take advantage of the extra voltage running through the spark plug, as the higher voltage would be able to handle the resistance of a larger gapped plug.

Any experience with them would be greatly appreciated as I’m trying to decide which box to go with for my YZ250.

I have had experience with them on my YZ 125. Honestly, if you’re a track or trail rider what you desire out of your timing can simply be adjusted by rotating the stator plate a few degrees. My YZ250 has a 3 degree advance and it rips, while my 125 also had advanced timing but was advanced through the X10 CDI rather than manually turning the plate. For the money, I’d just buy a dial meter and do it manually! Hope this helps.

I had a Vortex ignition and map switch on my 2006 YZ250 2T. I honestly couldn't tell any positive difference (I was also running a DEP pipe and silencer, VForce reeds, and a powervalve spring mod). Was pretty bummed about that.

I have a timing dial I might sell if you're interested.

5280 - have you messed with your timing any or checked it with a dial indicator to see if it is already advanced any?
I have the same parts as you on one of my yz’s along with a head mod & the bike flat rips as well 👍🏻😎👍🏻

I did, yes, but I sold that bike like 7 years ago. I could never get it to run quite as good as stock with the Vortex. I always wondered if I had a defective unit.

I have retarded the timing on my bike a few degrees, and am more so looking at the actual tuning of the cdi, retarding the timing got some more top end power, but am looking to see if there is more to achieve with a tuneable cdi unit.
