Hi all. I am currently smack dab in the middle of a complete engine rebuild on my 1983 RM250. This is the first time that I have ever done anything of this magnitude to an engine. Everything has went very smooth thus far...until today.

I messed up when pulling the left side crank seal. I wasn't careful enough when placing the wood screw that I used to pull it and ended up buggering the inside of the seal housing a little. There are two spots, with the marred portion not extending further than a third of the way in.

What is the best way to approach fixing this? Can I use some sand paper to smooth the surface of the bugger and then simply use some green loctite when installing the new seal?

Detailed instructions and positive criticism welcome.

I will provide pictures tomorrow if needed.

Thank you all and God bless!

If the crank is already installed, I would carefully remove any Chips or debris from the cases as to not get any case material in the crank bearings or into crank cavity. Then carefully place shop rag or paper towels over the bearing, to keep clean. Use Emory cloth or #400 grit sandpaper to smooth damaged area’s. Try to remove any burr”s that would cut the crank seal. If you can remove the burr”s, remove rags, install seal “ use 3bond around the outer seal after install. I”m a little confused about the full rebuild part, if you rebuilt the bottom end, why wouldn’t you just push seals out from the back side of the case?

Yeah, what these guys said.. sand carefully. I would maybe consider after that putting small dabs of quik-aluminum or jb-weld in the low spots and then sanding again after it hardens.

Sand it, you can use a little JB Weld or equivalent epoxy if you want to fill it in. Put a little blue loctite on the outside of your seal and install.

Split the case. Fix the seal area on the case. Install new seal and use a sealer on that edge. Put the case back together.

Do it correctly the first time and save money.
