That seems like a pretty legit set up for that style riding. Seems as though Mousses should last longer in that style of riding due to the lower speeds but I suppose there is always wheelspin and faster 'transfer' sections between the extreme stuff that will wear them down.

If you don't mind my asking, what is a ballpark cost to do a trip like your Dad did?? Travel, bike rental, parts, tires, hotels, etc. Seems like a dream trip, I'd love to do ISDE someday but might not ever have the speed again, so something like Bronze class at Romaniacs would be a close second I suppose.
Sounds like there isn't a ton of quad trail transfer sections but some flowy fun single track between the real nasty shit.

Im not exactly sure what the costs were but I know it was a bit cheaper this year than most. rented a brand new ktm300 from one of the local companies, the hotels are included in the entry fee for the days of the race, and you're only responsible for any parts you break. I think it generally costs around 10k canadian all in. about 1800 euro entry, similar for bike rental then travel costs on top of that. His rental company took them out for three ride/set up days before the race as well, which I think is pretty standard for most of the operations over there. Says food and stuff is pretty cheap in Romania as well.

It's almost unbelievable isn't it? This is where big time is won or lost in the race and for me it's all about good decision making i.e. wheel positioning, foot placement etc and that's in addition to clutch & throttle control, fitness, bike handling and all the rest of the skills they need.

As ever totally in awe of these guys.

They're using gummy tires like the ibex, the new michelin, golden tires etc with soft mousse bibs heavily altered. They can do that, but most amateurs can't afford to basically ruin a $100+ bib and have it basically last for the race. I ride with a couple factory riders from the USA and when they're practicing they're using basically destroyed tires with a normal soft bib or tubeless.

My dad is racing bronze class this year. On the rental bike he is on its a pretty cool tire setup for the rear. They run some mitas gummy, but on the inside they have a mouse bib with the inside cutout and run the tubliss inner bladded. They can make pressure adjustments but if anything goes wrong throughout the day the tire will never go flat. Looks like pretty incredible terrain this year. Longest descent was 7km continuous downhill, not kidding about vertical madness

Onboard with Mario Roman on Day 1.

The first sequence is bloody hilarious. ''Sorry Bro!''.

I was signed up for this year but moved my registration to next year. All in you are looking at $7K at the low end, $10K at the high end.

Bascially...

Entry: $2000ish (includes a lot)
Bike Rental: $2000-2500
Mechanic: $800
Tires & Parts: $1000
Flight: $1200

Obviously this doesn't include your time around the event, beers, having fun etc.

Come join me next year!!

Day Two Overall...

https://www.redbullromaniacs.com/results/2020/day2/offroad-day-race-pro…

1) Manuel Lettenbichler
2) Graham Jarvis
3) Wade Young
4) Alfredo Gomez
5) Billy Bolt
6) Mario Roman

Taddy had something go wrong, clearly. Slid back to 15th

Impressive showing for Michael Walkner. If memory serves, he's the Dakar dude, and his sister is one of the best big mountain freeski women in the world.

You are thinking of Matthias Walkner. He’s on the KTM Factory Rally team still.

Thanks for the breakdowns on the cost. I’m a few years out still, I’m waiting to hit 40 to give it a couple solid try’s to make the Senior ISDE Team before I start looking in to other “racing vacations” too seriously.

AHHHH Thank you. My mistake. Didn't he race Erzberg a few years back?

BTW, Yellow Pine is an awesome spot. I'm in Victor.

Taddy had to retire from Day 2 with a shoulder injury. Not sure if he will be able to continue.

I remember back in 2009, which was Taddy's first attempt at Romaniacs he also went out with a shoulder injury early and was never able to continue.

Man, I can't believe this race has been going for 17 years now. So many epic races.

For those here new to Hard Enduro or Romaniacs, here is a beautiful film about Romaniacs 2008 by my good friend Jeff Pakosta, owner of Throttle Entertainment.

There's a good amount of physical pushing but also there is a lot of flowing trails as well. I just don't think they highlight that nearly as much as the extreme stuff.

It kinda has it all. Ascents, descents, pushing, flowing trails, navigation.. And the gorgeous scenery of the Carpathian Mountains. If you ask most riders, Graham Jarvis included, they would say it is their favorite race of the year.

It's not everyone's cup of tea, but some of my favorite moments are the downhills where they have to traverse sometimes off the bike and with the engine killed. Terrifying but exhilarating.

There was a clip last year of Grimbo passing someone on a ridiculous descent with the engine off. The Silent Assassin living up to his name! Smile

Yeah, in 2009 Taddy hurt his shoulder in his Romaniacs debut then in 18 he got sick, along with Graham. Taddy got the monkey off his back last year with a 4th place finish but again, hitting bad luck this year with another shoulder injury.

I still think that when Taddy stepped away from the extreme events to concentrate on Super Enduro and Endurocross that it hurt his extreme skills. He's still never done the Roof of Africa or Sea to Sky and hasn't had the best results at Erzberg of late, either. I think his sheer talent keeps him in the mix like he was last year at Romaniacs and Getzen.

I think the top extreme extreme riders are Graham, Manni, Jonny and Alfredo. Wade and Mario are there but not quite of the first 3, in my opinion. With that being said, though, Taddy would own all 3 on Super Enduro. As would Billy.

Here's hoping Taddy can come back for day 3.

Those Sherco's sure sound throaty...they bark! Crazy how the top guys always minimize wheel spin...their bike control is pretty incredible to watch...
I was at a demo ride last year. There were employees from another brand commenting on the amazing exhaust note of the carbed Sherco’s. They do sound mean!
