Can anyone confirm the year Honda switched to a metal water pump shaft & drive gear. I’m thinking 97 as the part # changed and everything else associated with the pump assy. Stayed the same. Appears both styles are still available from Honda, but I don’t want to order another plastic gear... they crack... see photo.. thanks..

I'm curious about this to. I've always wondered why manufacturers would use plastic over some type of metal.

97 & up steel water pump drive gear fits perfect... nothing else changed... so for anyone rebuilding 92-96 Cr250, don’t buy the plastic water pump impeller/ drive gear, which they still sell. Buy the 97 & up part.

Wonder if it will fit a 125 as well?

That Nino out of Italy showed the weight difference and it is pretty significant between the two. Also would be cheaper too.

I suspect they realised it was not that durable so they switched to metal.

Hey there, I'm doing some work on a 1994 CR250 for a customer and the plastic water pump is cracked. Did the 97 water pump shaft end up installing with no issues? Is the overall length and the diameter of the shaft where it sits in the bearing the same? Thanks so much.

Yes, as stated in my original post, it retrofits 100%, same seals, bearings.
