Fun Fact: He's not the one that jumps the fence in The Great Escape.

He did all his own stunts in the movie except for that one. The fence jump was done by a stuntman called Bud Ekins.

Bud Ekins. One of my Grandpa's best friends back when they were both around!

If you are lucky enough to get onto the Santa Paula Airport, I highly recommend trying to get into this hanger for a tour. No pics allowed from inside, but it is AMAZING. Still loaded with Steve McQueen's stuff. Family still owns it. The green matches the truck for a reason.

My grandfather was one of the owners of the Santa Paula airport for many years. (Early-late 70’s)
He had 3 hangers in a row, backing up to the 126. I spent many years hanging out with him as a kid during summer. I lived with my grand parents for awhile...
Steve McQueen had 2 hangers on the east side (end of runway, I am 90% sure the same ones in pics) I spent a lot of time driving my golf cart around the airport, I had a loop that went behind Steve’s hanger, I’d stop and say hi to the cool guy, little did I know who he was. Lol
John Travolta had a hanger a few down from my grampas, back when he was normal. Lol
My uncle flew with him (John) daily, to get his flying hours logged to get his license.
Small world, but I ended up working with him on the movie Grease, years later. Good times...
Bud was a legend, JN Roberts is my buddy’s dad and I have a lot of stunt friends, but never knew about his hangers being still owned by family, that’s rad !
I’m going to take a drive out and check it out this weekend. Thanks for posting that !!

Between your bikes and connections, you’ve got to be one of the coolest vitards. I legit seek out your posts because 73% of the time they contain some kinda moto gold.

Thanks. I’ve had a good life, been fortunate to have the life connections I have. I’m grateful for my friendships and try not to take them for granted. Moto has been my life since a very young age, I’ll ride until I can’t get my leg over the seat. Lol

Thanks for taking the time to post something positive. It’s been a long week back to work and it’s been rough with wearing a mask all day and all of the new rules in the motion picture industry. Anything positive is a welcome to me. Cool

Awesome memories. My best friends Dad has kept his planes there for a good 30 years now, and I still bug him to take me out at least once a year, usually for open house weekend when everyone opens up their hangers for show and tell. Some serious money out at that airport that most people would never know was there.

McQueen's last/this hanger backs up to the 126 at the south end of the runway.

Spotted this beauty a few years back.

No shit, man. I tend to blame the internet for a lot of the douchebaggery that flows so freely in our everyday lives. But it’s also the tool that’s allowed me to feel connected to a lot of seriously cool dudes and their shared passion of dirt scooters.

In times like these, it’s just a real kick ass reprieve to be able to come here and feel a sense of camaraderie with some fellow moto dudes. I’m gonna go wrench on my huskies and figure out which one of your 500’s I need to buy.

Yeah, I guess it is south, not east. Same hangers that he’s always had. Very cool...
they use to hold air shows there often, I rode in a bi-plane with the guy next to us and he would do barrel rolls and different stalls, etc. I threw up EVERY time I went. Hahaha
Thank God for the barf bags that peel and stick to your face. I can’t believe that he’s keep taking me, I did it every time.

Wink

I’m gunna load my van and go ride the track tomorrow, after a 4 month break. Crashed and re-injured my neck in April and it’s time to get back on the horse

Have a great weekend

I gotta ask my cousin, he’s got a better memory than me on details. It’s just like it, if not the same one. I can’t remember what color it was.
My grampa has a white Navion 2-seater that had Stars and Stripes 🇺🇸
He was raised in Arkansas, pretty much a red neck that made it. He owned 2 blocks of Ventura with his steel shop (Strong Steel) they just tire it down last year. Corner of the avenue and Thompson. Down the street from the courthouse. Made millions and lived a great life. Too bad my Grandma gave it all away to my aunts and uncles. Drug attics and alcoholics. Sad

My brother goes back to work tomorrow in Atlanta and they are going to be sequestered/quarantined for 11 weeks until they get done shooting the movie they were working on before Covid hit (something with Ryan Reynolds). Can't come home during that time. Crazy sh*t.

I’ve heard of this. Got a buddy on the same show.
That’s just nuts and I ain’t being controlled by anyone, they can pound sand. It’s bad enough that I have 20- so called Covid specialists running around spying on everyone. It’s like the Narcs that used to work at high school back when I was a kid.
But these so called specialists are young punk kids with ZERO knowledge of the business and they are getting under my skin !
I’m going to retire soon, so I’m just trying to survive for another year or two and pay off my house.
Then I’m OUT !!!

I wonder....
Would a Vitalizer actually buy it?
If so, would it be The Langham’s fault?
Could the buyer “blame him”?

It’ll be pretty expensive, once the dust settles. I’d give them $18K right now, if that was the selling price. I’d even let you ride the bike at ADITD vintage class.

I love being an Editor and working on sitcoms. Radford for me, Baby. Less than a mile from my house and my office has a window that opens, so no mask all day here. Don't start for another month though.

Yeah, be thankful ! It’s no fun
I have 35 years in the industry and it’s gotten progressively worse along the way.
I’m at Sunset Las Palmas studios on Station 19, TV Show. It’s a Walt Disney show, so they are going above and beyond to set an example of compliance.

what goes around comes around and I am rich with friendships. We are all just a group of motoheads with the same hobby/ lifestyles. I’m all pumped up to ride tomorrow, I’m loaded and ready to do work ! Wink I’m really hoping my neck cooperates and I don’t regret riding. But I like to gamble, so let’s do this ! Time to get the bike dirty

Is that the same airport where Cole Seely did his Elsinore video last year?

No, I’d have to ask him where they shot it. But I’m pretty sure it wasn’t Santa Paula

I know he was in the movie industry for a bit, not sure now.

Know him very well !

From late 70’s speedway, then moto and he worked with me for awhile, before landing the precision driving stuff.
He does a lot of streetbike stuff now a days. He lives by me too...

This thread made me think of you possilby knowing him. My wife and I sat with him and I believe his son a few years back at Phx SX and he mentioned driving the Batmobile and other cars. Sounded like a good gig to have.

This thread made me think of you possilby knowing him. My wife and I sat with him and I believe his son a few years back at Phx SX and he mentioned driving the Batmobile and other cars. Sounded like a good gig to have.
Yeah, I’ve gotten them both out to ride at my property. His daughter is a news anchor in AZ, so they were probably out visiting her. Great people... I had his son out with a bunch of the young up and coming stunt men back in January, I took them all on a good one. Lol lots of carnage that day, but everyone was able to get back to our vans/ trucks. Louie Franco brought most of them out to ride that day, he was just healing from a Baja 500 crash and wasn’t suppose to be riding.
Rick has not been riding as much as he used to, but he’s got skills on ANY motorcycle/ discipline. Johnny O’Mara used to stay with him a lot, back in the early years. They rode a lot together as kids, but Rick went to speedway and Johnny stuck with moto. They were both studs in their disciplines. Rick was a world champion speedway racer and left his mark. And everyone knows where Johnny ended up. Johnny and Donnie Hansen lived a block from me, when I was growing up, this was in early 80’s. It was amazing what they were doing back then, up in the hills, behind my parents house.
Many racers rode these hills during their careers. Bobby Moore, Mouse McCoy, Mike Kiedrowski, Damon Huffman, Casey Lytle, Kyle Lewis, Willy Surratt, Kenny Zahrt, Eddie Cole even Hannah use to come down from Lancaster to ride Plum canyon. I really miss that part of my life....

That's cool, good history and a perfect time to be growing up.
