It could mean different things in different culters.

In Utah, with the number of young mormon men going on two year missionary service missions, it is common for them to give their girl friends "promise rings" prior to leaving promising to marry them when they get back. So here, they tend to have most emphasis put on marrage. (same for a buddy of mine that lives in the mid-west).

A buddy of mine back east talks about them as a "I promise to love you forever" type thing with little emphasis on marrage.

I guess they can mean what ever you want them to.

Happened to my nephew. I was in YEARS ago and it happened to me while in the Persian Gulf (90-91). I can count on my fingers and toes the number of guys this happened to in my squadron. Doesnt mean it is going to happen... but .... as the old saying goes...
