I hate it when that happens.

Hope you heal up well.

Like has been said several times in this thread, never say never.

My last bad injury was almost ten years ago, and took five procedures to fix.

My leg isn't quite straight, and my left boot took some modification to make it almost fit, but giving up riding never crossed my mind.

I don't race any more, but I still hit the track and trails as much as I can ( although I spend a good portion of every lap just staying out of the way, these days...Smile )

Again, all my best for your recovery.

I believe that saturday a week ago was my last ride. After many injurys this one may be the one that takes away what god blessed me with, the ability to race a motorcycle well.

While crashing into a simple lowside with the bike nearly on its right side is stopped.Like it hit a post in the middle of the track. With my leg under the bike I was thrown forward smashing into the spokes with my face and breaking my leg into pieces.

I rarely take my 2 girls(9&13) to the track but did this time.We went early so they could ride their dunebuggy/gocart around and we grilled out. They could not see where I was down and the minute my body stopped tumbling it was all I thought off.My oldest has seen my ankle shattered and me wheeled into surgery at age 5 then they both saw me take the heli rode in 03 with a broken neck, now this.

I grabbed the leg and laid it straight just as my good friend Larry who runs the show got to me.I told him it was broke at the least just below the knee.As some other friends showed I told one to go get my girls and tell them I'm OK.

They get to my side shaken and teared but after they see my face they knew ole dad was gonna live.Told my oldest to meant the abulance at the truck with my backpack and cell so Cliff could drive us to the blue H.They both grew up a lot that night.

After X rays the ER doc tells me how bad it is and it is bad.Just crushed the tib plateau. It sheared off both sides and crushed the middle down an inch.On tuesday I see my ortho and he seems like he doesn't even know how to fix it.I also figured the ACL and MCL that was repaired in this knee in 1990 from a mishap at the lake sugartree national is all gone because it split at the screw that held the kneecap doner ACL in.

Doc drains a can of blood and tells me surgery on thurday. It goes well,I guess, and now I have a plate that goes half way down my shin and looks 5 inches wide full of screws.I have bone graphs from that guy that smacked the bridge 2 weeks back after to much shine and the first thing he told my wife and parents was I would need a total knee replacement down the road.

I'm so proud of my oldest girl for the way she has stepped up to take over my chores.Going to try and work tomorrow because I have no plan being self employed.

I love this sport and the lifestyle that goes with it.I got several kids here that I do bikes for and will still do that for sure.Already got my shop set up for working from a chair, lol.

Thinking that was my last ride bumms me but I was riding great and if it was then its a good one to be the last.

Well,
I need to ice down now,the leg is throbbin' like a bulls pecker in a green field full of hefers.Figured so of you guys would like to know what happened.

Ride safe but hard brothers, and ride like it may be your last......
Hey Dave, I hate to hear tht man. You're a tough dude so I'm sure that you'll heal up fast and I'll bet that wasn't your last ride. I told myself a while back that I wasn't pressed on riding, but riding is the only thing that really lets me get rid of stress. Now I'm thinking about trying to race again. However, I do understand what mean when you were referring to how it affected your kids.

I haven't made it up to Muddy Creek in a while, but when I do I'll let you know.

BTW, you should post more, since you will have a little time on your hands. You're one of the best people to ever roll through the MX internet world.

Sorry to hear about your injury and hope thing heal quickly. Unfortunately I've got more bad news for you. You've got an incurable blood disease called Motocross. It may lie dormant for years, but it will flare-up again. It's good to recognize your #1 responsibility is to your girls right now. The world needs more parents like you. Some day, they'll be grown and you'll have done all you can. If you're lucky, you'll still have your wife to think about, but she'll want you to be happy. She'll understand. You won't be as fast, but that's not the point. Take less risks and have more fun. Ride at your comfort level and and only race yourself. I didn't (couldn't) ride much between 25 - 45 for the exact same reasons. I'm now rapidly closing on 50, kids are grown, insurance is paid up and I'm riding as much as I did when I was 20. It's not the end. It's the start of a new phase. We'll be here waiting for you.

Get well soon HB! Good luck and may your injuries heal well.

Two years ago I took my youngest son with me to the track, the first time he went with me without his mom. Unfortunately, I had a big crash on a 4th gear downhill jump and as a result a partial muscle tear on my leg.

I remember laying down on the track and not being able to get up, when I friend of mine brought him over to show that I was OK. I looked into his eyes and he was just SO scared. I just felt terrible for putting him through that situation...Sad

Damn Dave. It's not easy having fun. Ouch! I swore I was done at the end of 07' again. I missed all of 08' literally after breaking my back and that whole year was spent rehabing but as I healed I gained confidence and now I am back riding weekly. I never thought I would ever be back at first. I realized even more how much I love this sport. Keep yourself all "jarred" up and take it slow. Heal fast.

Damn HB, sorry to hear about your injury. If you do decide to hang it up, remember, it's still a blast to be at the races and share moto with you family and friends. Chin up and heal up quick Dave!
