OK anybody had experience with a Honda crf450r (2017 UK model with dealer fitted e-start kit) electric start not working? I'm trying to sort out an issue where my bike's electric start stopped working yesterday.

When I press the starter you hear a click from the relay under the seat but nothing else happens. The red light by the kill switch flashes fast once as you press the start button, then gives a long flash afterwards.

I've tried swapping batteries, the battery is fully charged and fine. At the first relay from the battery there are two fuses, both ok. When I press the start button this relay clicks, but it never puts out a voltage? I've checked with a meter. The starter motor is working fine, it cranks over ok if I wire it direct from the battery. No voltage coming down the cable to it though? I've also checked the clutch-in switch which is disconnected. That wire is still connected fine.

Faulty relay maybe? Any other ideas? Can't find any bad connections anywhere.

Have you checked that you are getting power on the starter motor?

Edit - ive just read your post properly.

Swop out the relay.

Yes I've checked that, no current in the cable running to the starter motor. Starter motor works fine but is not getting the signal

Some people are real buttholes....why the downvote on the OP's legit question?

The culprit must be your relay. Change it.

Ok thanks, I've just done the screwdriver short across the 2 bolts on the relay and it makes the starter motor fire. So it sounds like it is that relay?

Correct.

..buy two of them, they are cheap and its handy to have a spare available.

He doesn't need to. He has the '17 Honda. Just needs to bolt the kicker back on.

Wait up. You say you bridged two bolts? If so the part should look like this or similar.
Starter solonoid.

When I had the click under the seat problem the battery ground wire bolt to the frame was loose.

Thanks, which ground wire are we talking about? I’ll check it. I have run a wire from the negative battery terminal to the attachment bolt on the starter and that didn’t work so i’m not sure mine is an earthing problem, but definitely worth a try 👍

Relay giving up was a common issue on the 17 models in the uk, my bro and 3 others i know all had the same issue and a new relay solved it.

This is a fix that Ken Roczens has tried.

It is the solenoid that is on the right side down on the subframe. Just had the exact thing happen to my 18 450. hit the button and nothing. replaced the relay under the seat beside the battery and it didn't fix it. cld jumper a screwdriver across just like you did and it would roll. Replaced that and everything is grand!! $45.00 will get ya going.
