Hi Vital, though I do not have a high post count I have been on motorcycles the majority of my life and have visited this forum for valuable information for as long as I can remember.

As the topic states I am converting an XC to ride more moto. Picked up a stock 21/19 wheel set and stiffened up the suspension and the bike is working very well. As far as the tank converting goes I am looking for some technical info I can't seem to find anywhere. I know a 250/350/450 sxf tank will fit perfectly. But I do not know if 4 stroke fuel pump creates the same pressure as a TPI pump. Anyone out there know if this setup will be compatible before I spend the coin on fuel pump. I have looked at OEM parts diagrams for all and they look nearly identical. Thanks

The fuel pumps are not the same, they have different part numbers, but your XC pump will probably fit the SXF tank

What are you doing for gearing for your bike? I have the same bike and noticed that 3rd gear is too short and 4th is way too high for the little bit of Mx that I’ve ridden so far. Other than that I really like the bike m. Post up some pics of the conversion!

Why does the tank need to be converted?

Simply aesthetics. Some may argue that's dumb, but I love beautiful dirt bikes.

It works pretty good for me. I pull 3rd as far as I can. I put on a FMF fatty and it broadened 4th just where I need it.

The same psi as the 4 stroke.

That makes me think that the difference between the fuel pump assemblies is just the length of the tubing to get all the way down to the bottom of the larger xc tanks. Might I ask how know this information regarding pressure?

Where are you putting the oil reservoir?

Why would I need to move the oil reservoir?

I was under the impression that the actual pump and the injectors were the same as the 4 stroke. I will call and see if I can confirm that for you. I am a dealer and the psi on both pumps is 3 Bar. I have done pressure tests on both. What I have not checked is if the plug in is the same on both units.

Gotcha.

Is the translucent TPI tank any larger than what the "equivalent" black SX tank would be?

Where I'm going with these questions is that KTM has done a good job making bigger tanks that don't stick up real high. As a result, for short local race motos where you don't need a lot of fuel, an "off-road" tank lets you carry just a little bit of fuel down low, near the CG of the bike, which seems like it would be advantageous in terms of handling performance.

But yeah, if you want the black tank, I totally respect that.

Although I kind of resent the implication that an off-road bike (translucent tank) is not beautiful. Dry
I like beautiful bikes too and the TPI already fits the bill in stock trim, in my opinion.Cool

Oh nevermind xc to moto.. I did this, put a 19in in the rear, turn up the power valve, add 1-2 teeth in the back sprocket.... s/b good to go..

You guys could also take a page out of MXA's book and add a tooth or two to the rear sprocket. This will bring 4th down into a more usable range. Remember that you'll run out of 3rd even faster than before, however.

Switching from a 18 to a 19” wheel has to be the least bang for the buck conversion possible

Agree with the advantage of running the fuel low.

I had a YZ250 with an off-road tank and I preferred it to the stock tank for MX because it kept the fuel low.

Same with my son's 150 SX... he put an XC tank on for enduros and has never changed it back for MX.

I wish my MX tanks were translucent so I could see my fuel level.

But.... OP's bike isn't my bike.

Not sure how the 250 revs out but my tx300i kinda fell flat on top. Mine has a factory fatty and powercore 2.1 which helped but I went out a half turn on the power valve and it made a big difference yesterday at my hare scramble. I'll keep playing with it but definitely look at adjusting it if yours does the same thing.

I've adjusted to the power valve on my 125 and it really changed the characteristic for the better. Every thing I have read though says KTM recommends not to touch the power valve on the TPIs, but maybe I should play with it.

Does anyone have experience with the Coober ECU? What I have read says it really richens it up and makes it feel a lot more 2 stroke snappy.

Yeah I've read that too but I think that is more of an emissions thing. On the 300's most guys go flush with the adjuster but I was nervous to go that far so I just started with the half turn but it made a very noticeable difference as it really fell on its face on top before.

Thanks for the insight. I'm going to start with 1/4 turns and see where it takes me.

Does the PV adjustment change the feeling of the jetting at all? I rode my 250 on the Mx track two weeks ago and it was very flat on top

Have a look at 2 stroke performance in Australia. Dave has some excellent results for relatively cheap money. Like 4-5hp in the lower mid range.I think he has just added a US distributor and a UK one to boot.

Anyway, might give you enough power to still have a decent 3rd 4th gear overlap.

Powervalve adjustment is a must. Again, on 2strokeperformances facebook page he has a few good dyno videos showing the difference,

Their TPI power kit looks very promising. The only drawback is having to send my ecu across the pond to be flashed. I'm sure in time there will be more companies in the US flashing but weeks without a bike will suck.

I’ve been doing some reading on the JD Jetting tuner that they offer. Seems like you can richen or lean out multiple circuits with their deal. From the bit I read it gets good reviews I’m going to look into it more. Definitely could use more top end

Do you have a pipe on it yet? With a fatty and the power valve adjustment its a BIG difference.

ExtremeCarbon makes a really awesome carbon tank wrap for that model
