I am in the market for a new small bike class. We race moto and I have had several small “pit bikes” over the years for chasing my grandson around and him riding the pit bike track between motos. I was constantly working on the older junk so I want something fairly new. I was all set on getting a CRF 110 but then he said he would rather have a Grom. Now the Grom is appealing to me as I can run to the local dollar general/family dollar on that little thing. He also likes to ride in the yard on occasion. BTW he is 11 y/o currently.

My question is can it be made into a decent pit bike/yard bike? I know those two things risk broken blinkers and body parts (fenders/tag brackets) but can it be a decent all-around dirt’ish bike?

I know the CRF 110 2020 up is fuel injected and the more desirable. Does the Grom have a preferred year. I am probably going to just buy new but just incase it has been only BNG the last couple years what should I be looking for? Is the ABS worth the extra $200?

Got knobby tires on a grom. Works well. thing hauls ass. Can get you to where you wanna go. Can’t really beat that on it and jump it like a pitbike but it’s so nice to rip into town at the track if you need something.

My buddies and I rip all over and go off road also, you can ride these like a pit bike if you're willing to make the suspension a little stiffer, especially the forks. I absolutely love this bike for the price. Plenty of people put knobbies on and use them as an actual pit bike also.

Ton of aftermarket support also, you can do anything to these bikes. Throw a CBR300 motor in it if you want.

I have a Kawi Z125. Ya, put some knobby style tires on it and it is good to go for pit bike use. Plus, it is crazy fun riding around on local streets. Hard as F to wheelie though...

The Grom is awesome; but, it'll get BEAT UP quickly on a track. As a pit-bike for race day it's prefect &, as others have said, you can ride into town or the store on it: Priceless.

I was torn between a Z125 or a new 110. Decided on the Z. Super fun to rip around town. Plan on taking it on Moto trips so I don’t have to unhook the truck to go into town since my brother in law got one too. You can get caught up buying a bunch of stuff for these too

I’ve been looking at a Grom. My dealer has the knobby tires for them and he says they set them up with the knobbies and hand guards all the time.

Oh shit, so its hard to wheelie on? Thats kinda why he mentioned in over the 110 due to it having a clutch. I know you can add a clutch to a 110 but I'm leaning really heavy toward the Grom for reasons you guys mention. I go to town from the track quite often. Sometimes I like ice cream before bed... lol Perfect to run pick up a $6 pint of gas station overpriced ice cream.

So, can you wheelie it or not? Every kid wants to learn to wheelie. While I won't condone their activity, he is well aware of how cool those wheelie boys are and wants nothing more than to walk wheelie's like that but he is forced to learn in the yard and on the dirt.

Yes its hard to wheelie, stock.

If you get stiffer clutch springs and drop a tooth in the front sprocket you wont have any issues, its like viagra to get this bike in the air. Also, remember to get an aftermarket oil pump with a copper pickup tube before you wheelie often, you will starve for oil without it.
