CR125 2003 - I'll just clean it up and grease the bearings build - NOT!!

Edited Date/Time 4/28/2020 11:25am
Hi,

Having taken a hiatus from my frustrating CR250 02 build I decided I'd grab a 125 to get me through the year and at least get a little riding in.

Found a super clean, pretty much all original 03 CR125 going locally and grabbed it for a reasonable price. Looks low hours and was cared for. Intention was to just give it a once over, top end and then ride.. the road to hell is however paved with good intentions.. Smile

Plan is to rebuild the top as the engine is clean as a whistle, replace all the bearings, rebuild forks and shock and just a general tidy up.

Here's the bike as it was before the work began. I'll post some updates of the work so far later..

Just curious what these are going for these days. I have one that I have my eye on but I think the price is a little high. Looks like a great base!

Couple of shots of the strip down thus far;

Frame is tidy and just in need of a little clean up;

Engine is on the bench but it's always nice to open a couple of the covers and see something nice and clean;

Forks and shock have gone away to be rebuilt.

Head bearings have been regreased and feeling lush.

Only issue at the mo is that I can't get the darn cylinder off the thing. Seems to be frozen onto the dowel pins. Got the heat/lube treatment and tension on the cylinder so fingers crossed it will free up. Patience...

Nice, i have an 03 125 and a 250 also.

If you need any info, torque specs etc along the way, i have a genuine workshop manual , got a few spare odds and ends also for the 03, if you're anywhere near E/Sussex you're welcome to borrow it if needed.

In our area (New England), you probably wont find anything in this shape for less than $2500. People are asking outrageous prices and considering everyone is asking those prices, my guess is people are buying them for that much. All I ever see on CL, Facebook Marketplace etc... is clapped out 125's that "runs mint...super fast...all it needs is (insert long list of things here)". Shit, it's hard to find project bikes near us for less than 1500. I have found a few further north in Main, New Hampshire, Vermont areas though.

In the UK the range seems to be from about £1800 - £2800 depending on the obvious. I nabbed this for a shade over £2k and even though it’s clean it’ll prob end up at the top range once all is done. At least I’ll know what shape it’s in once it’s done!

Your 03 looks super clean mate!

Thanks for the kind offer. I’ll could defo do with some info as I don’t seem to be able to find the workshop manual online anywhere. Let me know what spare bits you’ve got floating around at some point..

After a couple of frustrating weeks we're finally making some further progress!

Lots of OEM parts. Replacement cylinder as the original jug had a small Nikosil flake on the exhaust bridge (I'll get the old one replated and ready to go as a spare). Pivot Works link and swingarm kits. Renthal sprockets.All Balls carb rebuild kit and Specbolt kit. Just waiting for the MX Bonz airbox kit and the piston and we should be getting close.

Finally succumbed and stripped it down to the bare frame. All cleaned and ready to go...

Forks and shock are back so I'll start building this weekend.

So nice to finally get to build something.

Pivot works link bearing kit assembled and head forks installed. All dry run at the mo to make sure we're all good..

It's about now I'm wishing I got the shock spring powder coated but I'll probably be changing it anyway as I'm not quite as light as I used to be!

Nice build so far. That polish on the frame is a bitch to keep up on though!

Thanks - I may well take the polish finish off as I bought it like this but think I prefer it back to stock tbh..

Nice bike. I grabbed a 04 CR 125 two years ago for $1700 in the Seattle area. Sometimes it seems I enjoy riding it more then my 250

Thanks. That's a sweet deal you got on the 04! I've got an 02 CR250 stripped down to the frame at the mo but it needs so much doing to it I thought I'd tackle something a little less stressful on the wallet Smile I'll start the 250 build again once this is ship shape..

I do have a decision to make on this however. Intention was to keep it as original as possible but the brake lines are tired and need changing. I'm looking at Venhill braided hoses and the red ones sure look sweet.. not sure whether to grab these instead of black. Tough decisions..

Managed to get all the parts cleaned up this weekend and the workshop tidied up in readyness for building proper. MX Bonz airbox kit is here as is everything else I need other than the break lines. Hopefully from here on in the only way is up!

Been a while since the last update but been busy..

Engine rebuilt and ready to rock 'n' roll. Will be vapor honed at the end of the year when I rebuild the bottom end so I've just got to live with the fact it's not looking as pretty as I'd like. New cylinder but getting the power valves in a working smoothly was a major PITA

Starting to look like a bike again finally.. waiting for a few bits and I should be on the home straight..

Just realised that I’d forgotten to update this. Really pleased with how it came out in the end. Stuck some hours on it since completion and it’s sweet! Just grabbed a flat topped RM125 piston so next plan is to install this along with a modded cylinder head as per Gorr. All I need to do is find a used head but seems they’re as rare as unicorns..

Enjoy;

I built an 03 a few years ago and got a new OEM head it was so cheap, looks like they are currently "not shipping", bummer!

Yep - been looking for while now.. If I can't find anything I'll have to grab a VHM and be done with it..

To get the engine to breathe, add the 05-07 airboot and drill 3 holes per side on the airbox. Really makes a difference on the 02-04 bikes

Thanks fella. I've got an 05 airboot and mxbonz fix kit on it already but can't bring myself to drill holes in the airbox Smile

Understand the hesitation. Just makes a huge difference on these bikes. Also a cycra powerflow rear fender adds just more places for airflow. If you use the Uni-filters looks pretty sano

found a pic of a mxa project bike that has the holes but not the uni filters

Thanks for the heads up! The Uni-filters look the ticket. I wonder if an 04-07 airbox would fit on an 03? I'd be tempted grab one as they're still available and then drill the old one and fit the filters. I'll defo grab a powerflow.

Appreciate the post mate.

I use those Uni-filter snap ins on a bunch of applications and they are awesome. I'm about to put them on my 05 CR that I'm currently building. Here is a pic on my 03 CR I did. I didn't put them near the front like the MXA bike above because I tended to pinch the bike there.

They look great. I'm sold and will space them like yours.. no point in popping these in and then blocking them with my legs Smile

I have to agree with the drilled air box modifications and holes. These bikes are starved for air, and any increased airflow helps. The 07 air box and air boot are slightly reconfigured to have less restrictions for air and yes they fit all CRs 02-07. The Cyrca high flow rear fender also helps when packaged with all these improvements. I really like the drilled air holes and yes I was reluctant at first to drill into a brand new air box also, but it’s worth it. The UNI ones are nice because you can remove the little filters and clean and oil them each ride like regular filters. If your willing to invest more time and a little money there’s numerous other performance upgrades left like changing the carb and retarding the power valve. Bike looks awesome too.

Thanks mate.

I'm going to grab another box and pop in the filters for sure.

On the other points from a carb perspective I presume you mean PWK A/S? I purchased on of these some time ago, refurbed it and then went to pop it on only to realise that the 03 has a short carb and my PWK is a 90mm long body - doh!

I'm interested in the PW timing mod? Saw some things Nino had posted on the HPP motors but hadn't seen anything for the later gens? Tell me more Smile

Your bike looks awesome BTW

Sorry I don't want to get too far ahead of myself.
Yes I was referring to the 38mm Kheihin PWK airstriker, I have the short body with the screw top.
It gives the bike more top-end but suffers in the mid range because of it, which makes you wear out the clutch to keep in on the pipe. That is where the 3mm washer on the powervale helps is in the mid-range, but without the 38mm carb, this upgrade is not needed and probably make things worse.
I am going to add the STIC meter bloc into my carb soon, I believe that may be the only power left to gain without boring the cylinder

so you replace the pin in the cylinder with a larger diameter one or use a piece of hose for a temp fix where the red line points to
