I remember someone explaining the way PC get around the rules by having a different ignition mapping up to the point at wich the bikes are tested. they make the bike fire after top dead centre so the piston is on the way down and the explosion is quieter. As the bikes on track never race below that figure it doesnt bother the riders. The FIM testing is I think a little different and you cant get away with that tactic. Maybe someone could fill in the gaps on my second hand information.

Just about every team has an ignition map for sound test that way if they get tested when they pull off the track they just flip it back.

I've never gone through sound test at a Nat or SX but I have at AX and I can tell you that there a lot of funny business going on..

We noticed the same thing with the noise....... My only poor guess is becasue of the mountains the sound seemed magnified. It was by far the loudest race I have been too.

due to the testing methods, they've basically made it a free for all. Of course they are loud as sh1t. Nobody is going to be the first to cut even a fraction of a horsepower unless everyone has to deal with the same cuts.

No matter what someone has to bitch piss and/or whine.

WHY? Nothing is ever good enough for this group.

Did anyone stay for the 2 stroke race? Those bikes were pretty loud too. I'm not complaining at all though. I like the sound. A race bike should sound scary fast right? Anyone ever been to a NHRA race at Pamona? Now thats loud! Never heard anybody complain that "it's too loud" after the first "Nitro" run of the day.

Yeah, make 'em loud... it is a closed course... and, I mean, there are other louder things out there. I mean, airports are pretty loud. Rock concerts. Demolition sites, I'm sure are loud too.

But hey, it's closed course. It's not like people can get tracks closed down because of noise or anything... oh, wait a minute...

I think this is a real problem area in the sport... I am NOT a whiner and love loud motorsport noise. But I brought my 4 year old daughter to and Arenacross this year and could not believe the noise level. She had earplugs in and never complained but I honestly was worried about her enough that I was covering her ears along with the ear plugs as much as possible. Between land closures and other sound related issues I would like to believe we should all have some common ground here. I never looked at it from a loss of spectator standpoint until I brought my daughter to that AX. I guess I don't give a shit about my ears but certainly don't want to take chances with my kids!

Not sure what the answer might be... I know many bitch about the 450's being too fast anyway, this could be a win win situation to not downsize to 350's and limit noise. Also might make the 250F's more comparable to a 125? I do know that if we want to make our sport more appealing to the masses sound is an issue!

If you want to put an end to the fun and games that go on at sound testing then Let DC, FIM, AMA and any other concerned group know that you support the FIM 2M max sound test for 2010. there is a chance that it will only be implemented in Europe next year.

I bring earplugs, call me a pussy all you want but after 10 hours of listening to 4 strokes I can go home without a headache and my hearing intact.

I got custom earplugs made a year ago. I can't take the noise on the gate anymore. 4St noise is bullshit. Mine included.

Where'd you get those made?
I use the foam ones as a backup, but they fall out after about 3 or 4 big hits. I went to my local audiologist and had them shoot molds up my ears. They send them out and I got them back in about a week. It cost about $100. You kind of "screw" them in and they won't fall out.
There are some generic ones that are about $20 that work very well as well.
Custom are the way to go.
