Hi, new to the forum and hate to dig up a year old thread but I am having the same issue. Bought my son a New 2019 TC85 last week. Filled it up with MAXIMA CASTOR 927 and 93 octane (ethanol free) per manual 40:1 ratio. He was going easy on it for a proper break in and I noticed a lot of spooge coming from the exhaust. He got about 3 hours on it and fouled the plug. I pulled the plug and it was covered in oil. It's obviously running very rich. Our elevation is about 750ft in TN. I checked the owners manual for temp and elevation for carb jetting and it says it's installed with the correct jetting. I went ahead and followed the above recommendations from Tracktor but I don't have another spark plug to test it out. I read on another forum where the 927 premix does cause abnormal spooge. Is this true? What do you guys recommend? Do you know of a plug I can buy locally at an auto parts store or do they have to be ordered? Thanks for all your help.

Current Setup (untested, waiting on a plug)
142 Main (stock)
Leaner needle supplied - middle (3rd) clip
45 Pilot
Air screw 1 1/2

BR9ES, BR9EG, etc will all work just fine. KTM/Husky specs a shorter top plug but plenty of room so isn't really necessary nor is the special iridium plug. Sure they are a better plug but I doubt anyone would notie=ce a difference on a stock bike(or any other for that matter).

Make sure the white connector for "easy mode" isn't disconnected I actually recommend hard wiring this as we had an issue with that connector.

I suggest running a full synthetic oil in these bikes as it keeps the powervalve from gumming up. we have no exhaust spooge ever and also don;t foul plugs. That said, my kid rides pretty aggressively. Most likely it's a combo of oil and easy riding. Don't be afraid of raising the clip on either it seems to make a big difference on these bikes.

For break in just ride it like normal. I just did a complete bottom and top end on our '18 105 and as per our usual a do one warm up to make sure everything sounds good then it's ride it like you race it. I have done this one more bikes than I can count and our pistons look great and the bikes run hard. You get better initial ring seal that heat cycles/gent rides...... even brand new of showroom floor.

Follow up from my older post - I have been running .028-.030" on squish which requires thinner base gaskets or head cut. Base gaskets are simple and I haven't noticed an ill effects from using them on these bikes. Factory is set at .036"+ on every one I have rebuilt....

This post has helped me a lot actually. Trying to figure out the spooge issues with my 97 Yz125. I went down one size with the pilot jet and it fixed the spooge coming from the power valve and out the siliencer but she’s still running rich.

Everything sounds great until between 1/2 and 3/4 throttle. Bogs a little bit at that then picks back up. I ordered a lower size Main jet, but I’m going to mess with my air screw tonight and see if that does anything. Haven’t tried 1/2 turn out.

Also I run 927 castor and 32:1 ratio. And I’m not “on it” all the time when riding it which I probably need to work on.

I have a friend who advised me to not use synthetic 2 stroke oil. I think he said it’s not good for the older 2 stroke or something lol. Not sure why he would say that. Can I go between synthetic and non synthetic when I want to?
Sounds like you need to try lowering your needle. If you are not "on it" then the truth is you're likely spending most of your time riding the pilot and needle circuits so these will have the biggest effect for you. The truth is if bikes came stock with data collection the majority of people would be embarrassed to discover they spend very little time "on the main jet" or WFO like they think they are.

For the record, Castor-927 is only partially castor and the base in it is synthetic. So you are already running synthetic. I am not a big fan of castor oils. The modern synthetics are so good that there is no reason to run castor. All it does it carbon things up. People will make up any excuse why they run it mostly to justify the smell they like. Your 97 YZ is by no means an old 2-stroke. The engine is essentially the same in all respects as a 2020 YZ125.

I usually buy BR9EG or similar buy the box off ebay. Run them in all our two- strokes. I think using eivx(iridium) or something like that at moment. Same size & heat range just different tip.....

Whoever advised you not to run synthetic oil is probably come one who I wouldn't take advice from. I wouldn't run anything but synthetic in any bike with a power valve. That said, as long as tuned for whatever you are running and mixed properly most modern premix's are decent.

Not to say you can't but I wouldn't personally. I'm picky about setting so even buy my fuel from same places as much as I can. Don't get too wrapped up in the fact that a 2-stroke get's some spooge from pipe. If not always ringing out it's probably gonna happen. Focus more on how it runs............

We had a big problem with spooge on our 2019 TC85. The main reason is they set these bikes up way too rich from the factory. They want it to last past the 30 day warranty. If you have excessive spooge you’re more than likely fouling plugs as well. Not to mention your silencer packing is soaking a lot of that spooge up as well.

Here’s what we did to correct our problem. I purchased the JD jet kit part #JDHQ30 for 18-20 models TC85. It took about 10-15 minutes to install it and another few minutes to tune the carburetor. This helped tremendously and we stopped fouling plugs. We rarely see exhaust spooge anymore.

Bike:2019 Husqvarna TC85
2 Stroke Oil: Motorex Full Synthetic 2T
Mixture: 40:1
Riding Style: 11 year old mostly mid throttle trail riding

Funny you mentioned the JD kit. It’s scheduled to arrive today I’ve got one in my TC250 and its spot on jetting. We’ve also had less plug fouling with 8’s vs 9’s. Looking forward to swapping carb parts out and will post results Saturday night 👍🏻

Ok not quite there yet

Idle jet 45
Main jet 140
Lean JD needle at 2nd clip
Air screw 2 turns
Br8es plug
40:1 Amsoil dominator

Still getting some spooge although it’s better. No dead spots or sputtering. Maybe time to drill some air holes I guess, or down on the main jet? His riding style and speed is very similar to mine and my tc250 runs super clean. Definitely frustrating.

What's the air temp where you're at? Right now I have my kids at a 42 pilot, 140 main, and stock needle on 2nd clip. Thats what we ran during the winter series here where the temps were low 30s and upper 40s. Now it's getting a bit rich so I'm going to have to drop the jets down for next weekend. In the summer, I was at a 40 pilot and 138 main I believe.

It was probably mid 50s today and it’s still doing it a bit, I tried a 32:1 mix and no difference really. I’ve drilled a few small air holes in the number plates also. Maybe I’ll keep dropping my main

I would stop worrying about spooge and concentrate on how it actually runs. Jet the bike to how it runs not to keep silencer clean. How is it running bottom/middle/top?

These bikes come with mutiple needles so not sure why you would need a jet kit. Pretty simple to dial in.

What powervalve spring are you running? Setting? The PV is set very tight from factory.

What pre-mix? These like a full synthetic to keep PV systems clean.

Edit saw that. We run 40:1 HP2 or Maxima K2 & pistons look great on rebuild with no build up in PV.

Because it’s a PITA. It’s messy, and it’s not the way it’s supposed to be. The bike runs fine, Yellow pv spring. I do agree on the jet kit, I’m returning it.

That kind of came across wrong - I wouldn't jet the bike specifically to get rid of spooge. I would look at other areas oil flash point, PV sticking, rider not staying on pipe, etc.. I can say with the setup(s) I posted earlier in thread even the PV area stayed clean. Pretty aggressive rider. I set up multiple other bike same way & always clean.

I never ran the yellow spring or even heard of anyone here trying it so can't comment on that.

Have you repacked silencer? If packing soaked with buildup might keep dripping even after fixed?....

No worries 👍🏻 I was thinking about the silencer packing, I’ll definitely do that. Thanks for your help and prior posts!

Hello, I read through this post and was hoping someone can clear up a couplle of questions.

We have a 2018 KTM 85 SX.

1. Red PV Spring??
Are you referring to the larger KTM 2 strokes that use different color springs?
How many turns in on the PV when you use the red spring ?

2. Standard PV spring. Does anyone know the stock setting? How many turns in from fully turned out.

The red/yellow/green springs are technically big bike part numbers. Look under a 18 250sx PV schematic.

We ran the Red spring flush with case for best results. For the stocker I honestly don't remember if we even ran it for more than a ride or two so no idea? Maybe start at 1.5 turns in and adjust from there? There isn't really a "wrong" setting it's just up to the rider what they prefer..............

Thank you.

One more question that will help with jetting the 2018 and newer KTM 85

NRKC vs NRJC What is the difference between the NRK series and NRJ series needles? Are they different by half a clip? Which one is richer? These are the needles that come with the bike.
The manual does not explain this. Just provides a chart.
I’m assuming the alternate NRJC is 0.5 clip leaner based in the chart.

No longer on 85's but I believe the J is the leaner of the two. I know it's whichever one came separate with ours. Somewhere I have jetting spec saved I can dig out if needed.....

I know its an older thread, but I'm sure this info will help someone at some point. If the bike runs well everywhere there is a chance its jetted correctly, but his riding style or type of riding is the problem (i.e keeping the revs low). It looked like you were running 927? Try a oil with a lower flash point. I've been running Amsoil Dominator for many years now and its been a great oil and has a lower flash point.

Hi AJ 565 This is interesting. I never thought about flashpoints. This may be my problem. I have tried literally everything else and the bike runs rough no matter what I do.
I am currently using Klotz R50 full synthetic. I noticed this has the highest flashpoint.
I’ll try a different 2 stroke oil and see. Too bad I just mixed up 4 gallons of the Klotz.

We’ve had better luck since going from the dominator to Castrol power rs tts. That coupled with him getting used to the bike and in the power a bit more helped
