Toronto Supercross - Any idea if/when it will be back?

Edited Date/Time 1/6/2020 1:17am
We've had some iconic moments up here in the great white north. Anyone know when the series will be back?

I'll never forget Stew in 2014:

I don't have information to add other than it seemed as though the border crossing and truck hassles, and subsequent complaining from the teams, is what really spelled the end for Toronto. I believe there is something to do with either size or weight of the trruck/trailer that is different for Canadian highways, but I might have this wrong.

It’s too bad, Toronto always had one of the largest and best tracks, and the stadium was Always sold out!!

Think I went to the last 10 or so there, don’t think I ever saw It sold out, most of the entire top section of seats weren’t even available(?) unless my memories are drunken.....

I think you are probably spot on. I work in A/V and have done a few conferences in Toronto. Getting our trucks across the boarder has been a massive hassle. Plus they have randomly turned down some guys that work for us at the border, even though they had clean records (Canada doesn’t like letting you cross with anything on your record such as a dui).

Having a DUI is not a clean record. That being said, the Toronto round was never sold out. The attendance was really good. The "Skydome" holds a shit ton of people. I really miss having the round, it was a great event.

I personally do not see the round coming back. There were issues with the sizes of the rigs, people crossing the border, getting the proper documentation, and the additional costs. From what I heard, the riders did love coming to Toronto.

I'd only see it worth it if there was a second round in maybe Montreal. I'm 30 minutes away from Toronto so I'd love to see it back but I've settled on road trips to get er done

That will be highly unlikely that will ever happen. Montreal SX was a bust and that's why it's done. That place was empty.

I guess I should have worded that differently. I understand a dui is not a clean record. The two guys we had turned away for working there had a perfectly clean record. Although they were having a union strike the last time we went, not sure if that could have been part of why they didn’t want to let others come in to work as well?

Getting back and forth across the US-Canadian border is super simple if you have a passport and a clean record. If you have neither then forget about going either way across the border.

The truck issue is that the Toronto venue doesn't have indoor parking for the trucks in the stadium, that means the trucks park outside in a parkade across the road, the riders had to ride from the outdoor parking area into the stadium, and the crews had to bring their gear from this relatively distant spot to trackside. The Toronto round was usually in mid March and that usually meant weather was in the 30s or 40s, so not exactly a pleasant ride from the parking / pit area to the stadium. Do a google satellite view and look south of the stadium and you'll see the parking/pit area.

I always went to Toronto and loved it. huge stadium and always a great track layout. It would be great to see it back on the circuit, but more likely Detroit was put on back on the tour to try and keep some of the Toronto crowd while avoiding the border/parking issues some had.

Some of the team semi lengths are too long per axle and tire count for Canadian laws. Some teams have to ditch their tractor for a shorter rental unit with no sleeper to be legal and in the case of Star Racing, they had to snag a uhaul van instead a few times. And according to the teams I’ve spoken to said they also have to provide documents for every item and part on the truck when crossing. Subject to searches and proving they left with all the parts they entered with.

Back when smart top first did the CMRC rounds they had to keep everything they brought up. They had to have zero waste with anything they brought up. It’s also a tax nightmare for the riders. It’s a Canadian event so they got paid in CAD and had to pay Canadian taxes which if you don’t know is extremely high. I went up to Toronto twice for the race and would love to see it back again but I doubt It’ll happen again.

Thanks for weighing in. I knew the border and the pits were always a standing gripe in the past.

Too bad because it's a huge floor that always had great rhythm sections and long whoops. The lack of a pit party was another bummer, but being right in the heart of downtown made up for it with great nightlife.

Just come on down the 401 to the Detroit Supercross. Leave Toronto in the morning, hit up some restaurants or stuff in downtown Detroit during the day (its actually pretty nice around Downtown with lots of awesome restaurants) and then go to the race at night. If you leave the race at 10pm you can be back home to Toronto by 2am, or stay in Windsor overnight at Caesars.

Detroit really is a lot nicer downtown now than it was 10 years ago, nice to see the turnaround that has happened.. Great spot to be and also a good venue. I'm looking forward to this years race.

Makes you appreciate the effort the MXGP teams go through in order to complete a season. I believe a world sx championship should go to other countries but from everything I've heard, I can understand why it doesn't. Its a shame though.

The upper deck is never available, but the available section always sold out quickly, and I’ve had to buy my tickets from scalper every year.

My dad just retired and he would have to go to Toronto once a month for a couple days, he says the past 5 years Toronto has gone off the rails in terms of the downtown core.
