I had a kx250 that I ran type f atf in for a season. Atf is cheap but it never lasted long, within a couple ride days shifting would be more difficult and it would hit false neutral more frequently. I started running bel ray gearsaver and was much happier.

I have used the HP gear oil for over 30 years in all my 2 strokes regardless of brand... it’s 7 bucks a quart and works awesome!

One more question please, I'm an older guy, don't race, ...used to when I was young, I'm pretty mechanical, but I just keep this yz250 maintained. .. anyway, it has taken a whole quart. I just did it. Prior to that, drained the crank case. My manual says keep adding until it flows out. Is that right ? My gosh it must have been low. Haven't had this bike a real long time, and it's fast ! Should I keep pouring, until I see it comin out ? Thanx 😃

Don't bother with the check screw. Drain completely and then put 750cc of oil in. Using the check screw can give misleading indications based on how fast or slow the oil levels out between the clutch cavity and the transmission cavity.

I go half gear oil/half typeF. Because I had the same problem and this solved it.
