I went back in 2016. 40+ class - 38/31/30 for 31st overall.
I did not keep accurate records of all the costs. However if I estimate all of the costs of entry fees, hotels, gas, food, hotels - I spent between $4k - $5k.
Was it worth it? I have not regrets. It was a great experience, had a lot of fun. Having done it once and checked that box, I would not do it again.
The positives. - The atmosphere and energy are clearly different than any other race I've ever been to.
- 42 man gates are rare in any class anymore, much less the vet classes - so that was memorable and
worth it.
- It's actually important to some of your sponsors. In my case, Suzuki and Oneal made me feel like a
factory rider for that event.
- The most organized race schedule I've ever seen. The gate drops exactly when they say. Makes it
easy to plan your day if you know your first moto is going off at 10:30 on Tuesday.
The negatives. - The ratio of sitting around waiting for your race compared to your track time is HORRIBLE.
- The track is pretty unremarkable. The ruts are memorable - the rest is forgettable.
- The level of Money grabbing at the Ranch is embarrassing. One example is you need to buy a
"permit" for your pit vehicle.
Where will you have to go for your Area and Regional?
Do you already have your own RV or will you have to rent? I had a buddy who went in 91/92 and slept in a tent with no AC but nobody does that anymore. Consider a full week off work depending on how far your traveling.
Try to ride 2 classes or you will end up with a day of not riding at all. I just rode +25 in 06 and think I practiced Moday, 1 moto early Tuesday, 1 moto late Wednesday, nothing Thursday (so beer tent Wednesday night) then 1 moto Friday.
Definitely do it once for the experience if you can swing it. I qualified a few years ago for +35 but on the way home from the Hangtown Regional decided that I had been there, done that, and it was just too far, too expensive, and too humid to go again. I figured there was Mammoth and some other cool experiences out west that I hadn’t ever done and weren’t near the financial commitment that Loretta’s is.
I’ve always wanted to go. To spend that much for the “experience” is so far out of reality for myself it’s mind boggling. If the track was a hair more enticing, I would sack up in a heartbeat. But I’m not dropping $5k min for a little over an hour on a glorified fair race with ruts.
I went in 2013 and had a blast. There were a lot of Michigan folks that year so I new a lot of people racing. Whether its worth the money is all a matter of your perspective I guess. For me it was a bucket list item way up the list

could you imagine the shit show it would be if they didn't regulate pit vehicles there?

May I offer an alternative event for vets?
The World Vet Races at Glen Helen the first weekend in November is much more of an event for vets. 1 day of practice and 2 days of racing. It was much lower cost than LL's and to me a better event.
