As far as the topic here, I think that when it comes top-flight racers (and I'm talking everything from F1 to NASCAR, NHRA to motocross and supercross), the money usually flows one way. Could James fund it himself? Probably. But would it be at the level of support that he's used to? That depends. Have some staff and logistics guys made other plans for the summer? Are there factory parts allocated and available? Is there budget and support for everything from staff travel to fuel for the hauler?
Maybe the bigger question is, would it be worth it? There's a lot more that goes into it than a plane ticket and an entry fee.
It's much closer to a million.
As far as this topic, Since he's been racing steady from the age of 5, I'd say he's clearly due a vacation. It may seem like our dream to be out there, but it is a ton of work before and after the motos on race day. It's different for everybody but when I raced, It was rare that I took time off but when I did, it completely refreshed me and brought back that edge.
Especially since he gave his little brother his old one. ($500k)

If he wants a rest, he's earned it. But why race if he's only doing a few races, and not training full time? Why risk the injury?

Here is some education for you:
1) He (and nearly all of the other riders at or near his level) doesn't just have to go race one day a week and then his job is done, like you. Because it's his job, he does it all week, and not just riding: He has to monitor his diet seven days a week, work out on a set regimen, give up one day in each direction for travel to most of the races, spend three days a week away from home (at minimum, assuming he has no dealer signings or other commitments), etc. It's not as if he just has to drive to the local track (like you) and get on his bike and ride it, then go home.
2) I play guitar, and I'm decent at it, and I really love doing it: Does that mean I should be able to go see AC/DC for free? They should just play for me for free because they do for a JOB what I like to do for FUN?! Or Steve Vai? Or Joe Satriani? Should their CDs be free, too, just because I'd love to record an album for fun?
3) Besides all this, motocross is dangerous. You know, that's why they make you wear a helmet to do it (unlike playing guitar). So, why should a guy jeopardize his JOB (as in when he IS paid to race, which would be everywhere else except the Nationals in your scenario) by possibly getting hurt racing for FREE? What if he blows out an ACL (like he did a couple seasons ago) or breaks a femur (like Trey Canard did last year at Washougal) and it prevents him from racing the whole SX championship next year? It would be really irresponsible and stupid to hurt yourself at your hobby (motocross) and have it cost you your ability to go to work (supercross) in your life, right? Well, why is he any different from you?
4) Would you work FOR FREE?! The fact that you don't seem to like your job as much as James probably likes his job is immaterial. You chose your job and he chose his. Being the best in the world at basically ANYTHING is worth a lot of money, regardless of whether or not you're paid for it. Anyone who does something worth a lot of money for FREE is stupid. It's downright un-American.
5) Just because James is already rich doesn't mean he doesn't deserve to continue making a living at his JOB, and that he should do it for CHARITY. Imagine if Bill Gates just decided to give away Microsoft programs from now on! I mean, hey, he's rich already, right? And he likes software (did it as a hobby when he started) right? He should just do it for free now, right?!
That's seriously ridiculous.

Thank you for the lecture, good points i guess, but misdirected and ignorant of me and what you think I know or don't know.
My point was that I personally don't understand why someone in that position wouldn't take every title they could get while they were able to do so, Fuck the money.. it has already come and still will. It's about taking a natural ability and turning it into being one of, in not, the GREATEST OF ALL TIME. GET IT? It has nothing to do with ME, OK?
That's it, that's the whole ball of wax, James can put on a big gardening hat and plant fucking tulips on lenny's organ all summer, I don't care.

You could say "coulda, shoulda, woulda..." about anyone, but what does it mean? Maybe RC shoulda raced complete seasons in '07. Maybe Reed should raced MX in '07. Maybe James shouldn't have re-signed with Kawi in '05 with no 450 ready.
I think I understand your point; what's not to understand? It's right there in print. I just think it's a relative situation where what may make sense to many, regular working-class people may or may not make sense to someone running a multi-million dollar operation...especially someone who is already worth millions with a realistic potential to earn many million more in the future.
Obviously, he's made pretty good decisions to get in this position of taking the Summer off if he so chooses...I'd love to do it myself.

to rack the titles up.

The Man did it into his 30's.
What James does and has done is remarkable.
To leave now would be understandable.
But damn, think of what could be........................
You and the many like you, do not have a title, and would give anything to have one. You are working hard to get to the elite level, earn a full factory ride, and hopefully win a title or more.
If James chooses to race the Nationals, he will. it's about insurance, and big bonus $$ (which was not in the budget) that the factory is contemplating having to pay out.
