Iran is simply trying to drag the US into a war so they can somehow claim the US is the agressor thereby getting the UN to lift sanctions.

Over simplified but the basic jest of it all.

I'm thinking simpler than that.
There's a group of countries making it hard on them, economically.
So, they're thinking, tit for tat, let's make it hard on the outsiders, economically, as best we can.

It's a powder keg sitting next to a candle for sure.
Someone starts popping off missles, geez, that whole region could go up in smoke.

We have our proxies in Saudi Arabia and Israel so we don't have to get into it up front. What could go wrong?

Really, after thinking about it while I was working in the garage, told myself, "why worry about it?".

....and sure enough the price of gas starts going up, just like clockwork.
Suddenly, it went from "only 5% of the world's oil supply is affected, and don't worry; there's not much demand," to, "50% of Saudi Arabia's production is wiped out" and, "the vulnerable infrastructure of the oil supply is a major concern and could go up in smoke an any moment."

It's all in the perception, peeps.

People also forget that most of the current borders in the middle East are less than 100 years old and are largely a result of failed British Colonialism. Meddling in the region always has such positive results Whistling

All in good time my friend.
I felt the same way after 9/11.
And when they invaded our land and took a bunch of us hostage in 79.

But eh, even after the twin towers thing, they waited for a good while, until they got a lot of support from other countries.

It was only then that we went in there, killed their leaders, a few hundred thousand of their countrymen, along with destroying their cities and infrastructure.

All in good time my friend.

Yea, lets invade and destroy Saudia Arabia, an ally of ours, that tried but let 2 dozen radicals slip off to Afganstan, and give Iran, with all they've been doing, yet another pass.

Yeah, that sounds good.

Two dozen radicals that killed 3,000 people. None of these guys are good guys I suppose we're taking the lesser of two evils, Saudi Arabia is not our friend. We've messed up in Afghanistan, we messed up in Iraq, messed up in Iran, not a good batting average so far.

What should be the end game with Iran? Is the goal to remove the religious rulers and hold elections like Iraq? Destroy all military capability and install US bases in the country to ensure it stays that way? Claiming the future holds swift victory when the people welcome you as liberators is no substitute for an end goal again.

with Allies like that, who needs enemies,

never really understood how Saudi Arabia keeps getting a free pass, they are as bad as anyone else in the region if not the worst,

ill put my bit in,
my answer is to leave them the fuck alone, and let them trade oil like the rest of them, but since they may want to do it in another currency than the US $ then the US government would not like that, it cant be any worse than spending trillions on a war like what happened in Iraq,

its a radical theory, but everything else in the last 80 years has done no better in the region has it,

You already gave my answer.
An answer that many don't want to hear, but fail to admit is one of maybe 3 or 4 options,

Hey, anyone see any jetliners fall from the sky an land in a little town like Lockerbie lately?
How about any dictators standing out on a balcony ripping off a few rounds in front of a mass crowd in the courtyard below yelling death to America?

Now tell me, my learned friends, how do we deal with the situation at hand?
And don't go hiding behind the claim I don't know, I'm ignorant, I'm just a parrot of the media or my professor.

I'll help you guys.

1. Withdraw all support for all countries around the world. Close down all the military bases, bring everyone home, and
just let the pieces fall where they may.

2. Keep on with the job that has, after 2 world wars, and millions upon millions of being killed, been kinda handed to us. Yes, the job of police man of the globe.

And just don't think about yourselves, at this moment in time. Include your children, and theirs, and what you would like to see us, as a country, 100, maybe 200 years on out.

Thoughts, opnions, realistic suggestions, I wanna hear them.

I think there needs to be a large multi-lateral military peace keeping installation (base) in the region. Fall-out from conflict in the region is driving the refugee situation in Europe and it is in the best interest of the world to keep the Middle East region Nuclear free, including Israel. Nuclear free meaning all enrichment including for power generation. Sorry, you all cannot be trusted with that.

The region has always been ruled with a heavy fist, but those rulers need to have someone breathing down their neck (including Saudi Arabia, Israel, and Palestine) on a regular basis. This cannot fall on just the US. There needs to be forces from all over the world working together to keep things like this attack from happening or straightening it out when it does. I don't trust the government's of the region to do it on their own and I don't want the US to be in charge of it either.

So in a twist I think there needs to be even more presence in the region, but it is the problem of the world, not the problem of the US. I also don't want the US footing the bill for it all either as I have said the effects are being felt in Europe big time. The thing that sucks is that relations between the US and World for participation in something like this are at an all-time low. Not that it would ever happen like I described anyway.

Here is my "solution" for the US in regards to the middle east.

The regional actors have far more to lose than the United States when considering the threat posed by al-Queda, ISIS, and terrorists in general. The countries in the area with the most to lose are Turkey, Jordan, Israel, Afghanistan, and to a lesser extend Egypt, Iraq, and Pakistan. So, rather than the US doing the heavy lifting for them and essentially subsidizing their defense, the United States should discontinue all efforts to protect these counties from non-state actors.

The result of the United States no longer defending these countries is that they now have to step up and defend themselves, in the process realizing how much work the United States has actually been doing for them. No - this is not isolationist, we will still communicate, trade, support our allies, and intervene when OUR national security is jeopardized, or the national security of one of our allies is significantly threatened (and no, Turkey occasionally being rattled by al-Nursa Front does not count as significantly threatened).

The US can maintain their bases and observation posts, but there is no reason for us to continue fighting wars for people that do not support or pay for our labor. Plus, there is something to be said for the continued presence of the US simply exacerbating issues - we just killed 30ish civilians picking pine nuts in Afghanistan - if that doesn't breed more terrorists I don't know what does. We're doing more harm than good at this point in Afghanistan. The US and Afghan government has killed more civilians this year than the Taliban/al-Queda.

It's high time for the US to pull out and like someone else said, let the pieces fall where they may.

Plenty of other countries facing more threats from the middle east than us, so each of them need to step up before we do any more.
