Something along the lines of Wrong piston, wrong head, wrong base gasket, or wrong head gasket...

Sorry, somehow I clicked the delete button for my last comment. 2001-2018 should all be the same, is it possible the old cylinder was set up for a stroker crank? Is your crank stock or a Hot Rods crank?

he’s correct if it’s stroked you’re going to have issues with head clearance and possibly port timing...

Either measure your stroke length and compare it to the stock length... or start taking measurements of the the old parts and compare them to the new ones to see what’s different... also compare old and new gasket thicknesses... some strokers have a spacer on the base of the cylinder depending on how drastic the change is... If it’s stroked you have two options: return it to the stock length which requires changing the rod, or make the necessary modifications to the parts to make them not interfere...

Those are just year designations for Kawasaki If I remember correctly.... (I also thought E was the designation used for the later Kx500 models, not 85’s) Kawasaki changes the part number itself if they make a noticeable change and it’s no longer compatible... post a picture of the heads if you can...

I bet it has a +2mm stroked rod.

When I build a supermini (ie KX112) that is a +2mm longer rod and +2mm piston, I have to machine the head to clear the piston as it sits above the top of the cylinder almost 2mm.

The top edge of the piston should be at or a little below the top of the cylinder if it is stock rod length.
