A friend of mine that is still working where I worked before retirement took these pictures the other day. This jet will be converted to a Blue Angel - which means it is old and thrashed out. I'm curious as to why it took him 30+ years to make captain.

I know Top Gun 2 is in the works. I have no idea if they finished filming yet or not but I do believe it was used for the sequel as well. Apparently the plane was in Nevada. Is that where you worked?
I thought for sure that plane would have been stripped years ago and put back in action/demo.
I'll admit I don't know much about planes a side from they're cool looking.
And if you're wondering Top Gun: Maverick is scheduled to be released on June 26, 2020. Miles Teller plays the son of "Goose". Val Kilmer is back as "Iceman" as well. Jennifer Connelly and Jon Hamm will also star in the movie.
I'd probably get sick within the first minute of flying.
I've never been in a plane. I've only been up in a glider. It's weird being up there with absolutely no engine noise, only wind.
I can't believe you have an iconic screen name like maverick and you can't fly!?
Just kidding!
Very interesting thread, thanks for the history and pics. I loved that movie as a kid, even told my class on career day I wanted to be a fighter pilot.

Anyway, did you follow through with your childhood dream of becoming a fighter pilot? Probably not. That's not a dig. Rarely do kids ever grow up to be what they wanted to be.
If we all did, they're be an awful lot of Batman's wondering around the globe.
I got sam hain from the Halloween (Michael Myers) movies not the band BTW
Never got my license but I had bout 45 hours spread out in Beech Tomahawk, 152, 172, 182, Piper 140 and helped test fly a Beech Baron after the auto pilot got "fixed" which it wasn't.
I worked at a cafe at the Auburn, Ca airport just out of high school... good times !!
Regarding Top Gun most everyone knows a lot of filming was out at Fallon NAS in Nevada. Real close to Sand Mountain(self explanatory name) and the F14's, A4's and A7's would buzz the mountain from time to time while we were there making a mess in the dunes.
Mav you have to go fly a damn plane !!
I know there would be limitations but you wouldn't be alone anyway. Call any FBO that offers lessons, they usually have a low priced "introductory flights".
I got to fly for about 30mins in an old buddies dad's plane. I don't remember the make/model but it was a twin prop. Held 5 passengers I think. We took off from Pontiac MI, flew over Detroit and lake st clair then landed on a small island right across the border in Canada and came back. That's been 10yrs ago so my memory is a little fuzzy.
I don't know anything about planes but when our daughter was on the Reagan carrier we did a 7 day "tiger cruise" where you live on board with the sailors from Hawaii back to San Diego. The air show was badass ! I'd love a ride in one
So much for tiger cruse, it’s a really cool experience and everyone should see stuff like this!
My best experience was at 21 palms when they did a naypom drop for us
daughter "We NEVER get food like this" I guess they step up the meal plans for tiger cruise lol
Yes they do step the food up when civilians are there. What year did y’all go in.
The funnest throng we did was blast a saw and an m 16 off the back deck!
What boat were y’all on?
I heard about that movie watching Cobra Kai season 2 lol. Johnny mentions it when one of his students is trying to set up his dating profile lol.
Don't know anything about it. Just know it's an 80's movie.
Harry, you might know something about the following. Every now and then I hear helicopters where I live but it's always late at night and dark. I'm guessing it's military related because it always sounds like there's more than one. Is there any reason why they would only fly at night?
I don't live anywhere close to a military base. I just find it odd.

You can get pretty damn close if you don't mind a bit of a hike https://youtu.be/6zhAekECH78
One good memory is of a friend's dad eating chow with a group of us. He looks at us and says, "Look at you guys. You're all hunkered over your tray with your arm around it while you shovel it in with the other hand. Are you afraid someone is going to take your food?".
He was right, but I had no explanation. None of us ever noticed it. It took an outside observer to clue us in.
It's in Snowdonia national Park in North Wales, its not well known outside the UK but in my opinion its one of the most interesting places in the country. Where else can you see fighter jets fly past medieval castles?
The mach loop crosses into the lake district which is in England, here's a pretty cool on board through parts of the mach loop in a typhoon.

Our success is a double edged sword though...I'm getting worn to a nubbin' with the work load and travel...(most final testing has to be done on military test ranges...Yuma Proving Grounds, White Sands, PaxRiver...etc). Headed to Alaska in September.
And now we have a bunch of "Special Missions" aircraft to modify and deliver. That's all I'm allowed to say..."Special Missions"...use your imagination and you'd still be blown away.
I'm a super lucky knuckle dragger and I know it.
It took me quite a while to get the Navy guys to stop burning up tires on landings and scrubbing nose tires bald. They are used to carrier decks with tight quarters and strips. Asphalt and concrete are far less forgiving than a carrier deck.
I was lucky enough to have spent 5 years as a Navy photographer, and got to do some truly cool stuff, but unfortunately, I never got to fly in a Tomcat or a Hornet. I did get to shoot some air-to-air stuff with Hornets from an S3 Viking, and lots of aerial ship shots from helos, though.
Lol
