Hey! I just picked up a new toy. 2018 ktm 250sx with 3hrs , previous owner bought and said it was too much for him.

He ended up putting on the following:
-v force 4 reeds
-fmf fatty
-pro circuit 304 silencer (not sure why he mixed and matched)

I took it out yesterday and messed with the jetting, was a lot better but still not great. I went from stock to the following pilot-37.5, airscrew 2 out, main 460, needle on third clip). It felt like it was super rich on the bottom and mid, and didn’t have much over rev prior to my changes. Still feels like the midrange is really rough.

I also ordered a JD jetting kit. I’m surprised how expensive they are. Has anyone found other needles that u can order that work great cheaper?

Also I’m planning on buying a steahly FWW, should I go 9oz or 11oz for MX? What sucks is RM only has the 11 oz, to get the 9oz have to go to manufacture and pay more and shipping ??‍♂️.

Here are some picks of the bike, and my arm after I made it medium well while jetting on the pipe .

Send the JD kit back, it sucks. Run this setup

5.75 slide

Needle

The parts from KTM you’ll need are a S4 needle jet from a ‘18 250/300 XC. Stock you have a S1.

This is how you should set it up
MJ 470
PJ 32.5
Needle 42-75
Clip 4th position or 3rd depending on temp.
Needle jet s-4
AS 1.5
C12 or pump mixed 60:1
Power valve 1 3/4 turns in from all the way out.

Great bike, Inhave the same bike with 40hrs now. There are some good threads on here about jetting. I”m running the same pilot as you, stock needle on 3rd clip, 460 main in the sand, 450 on intermediate or hotter temps. Try the 450 main. I would also suggest dropping a tooth on the rear sprocket, it makes it easier to ride. I did change the slide to a 5.75, which is leaner, it helps clean up the low/ mid range pick up, the slide I bought from RMC is a KX125 oem part. I run 50:1 amsoil dominator with 50/50 110 Sunoco leaded & non ethanol fuel. Do a search on the other threads, I feel like Inhave my bike running pretty good, I do not think JD jetting is needed or a Keihin swap.

also get the longer silencer, the short one you have gives it more bottom end and takes away from the top.

Check out AJ565's thread in bike builds. 18 250 sx build. I'm using his jetting and 5.75 slide. I put a 9 oz. FWW on my 19 250 SX. Bike is a beast. Also did the jet block gasket and float needle seat o-ring update. JD sells the repair/update kit.

i had a 16 with similar mods.

The bike was jetted like shit from the factory. If you call JD they will send you a kit that tailored to your bike. I didn't feel like messing with a bunch of jets to get the bike right. The set up JD gave me was spot on and the bike ran perfect.

What’s the benifit of changing the slide?

I think it is a good idea to have all threads start out with a pretty girl sitting on a bike! ?

The slide is the biggest problem in the jetting. Stock its a 4.0 slide and that's super rich. A 5.75 slide on leaner and cleans up the off idle to 1/2ish throttle and makes it real crisp for better throttle response. If you can ride the bike back to back with stock jetting then change to what I've got it will be like riding two different bikes its that noticeable of change.

Thanks so much, I’ve been searching around and found all the parts. Do you know which style of pilot jet I need other than buying a “ktm branded” one? Also did u happen to find anywhere cheaper for the slide?

Thanks

I got all my carb parts from RMATV and used KTM OEM Mikuni optional jets. The slide is from a 2004 KX 125. I went on the KX 125 parts fische. Could not find it any cheaper.

Ok I did some searching and the needle is from a 2006-18 yz125, all the parts total including the slide, main, pilot, and needle seat is 106$ I’ll post part number list.

This isn't as big of deal as people make it out to be. The jetting is night and day on the bike.

I don't have one so I can't give any feed back. From what I've seen people on here recommend 9 for MX and 11 for woods.

I’m really excited to try out the new setup that you recommend. I can’t believe KTM sends out the bike like that from the factory it’s so far off and not enjoyable to ride.

Post up your feed back so I can help adjust if needed and log the areas its been verified. If you decide to run an oxygenated race fuel like T2 or u4.4 I have jetting for that too.

Get the JD jet block gasket update kit and mod the stock slide with a chainsaw file, drill some holes in the float bowl plug and baffle.

Just look up "Jarvis Mods"... great bike and easily sorted with just some time and a few bucks.

Also you should get a 1/16" drill bit and match the holes in the float bowl to the holes in the float plug.

Make sure and check the float height as well, if it's off even 1 or 2mm it can really fuckulate the way it runs down low. Chances are it will piss out a bunch of fuel as well if the float is set high like mine was.

I filed a notch in the stock slide on my 19 TX300 and it runs well. But buying a leaner slide would probably be the better option.

Make the slide leaner by using a file, takes 5 minutes. I used a 12oz clutch weight on my 17, cheaper than a FWW. There is a 7oz clutch weight out there too, the 12 works great and really puts the power to the ground.

For motocross would you recommend the 9oz or the 11oz FWW for the 2018 ktm 250sx?

also i looked at the clutch weight its a interesting idea, can anyone give me the negatives of the clutch weight. It seems easier to instal, from what i read the clutch spins 1/3 as fast as a Flywheel so the weight needs to be more to achieve the same effect?

I have a 9 oz. on a 2019 250 SX used for moto only. I feel an 11 oz. would be good as well. You could always get the 11 and if you think it's too heavy you can have it machined down. If I didn't install the 9 oz weight myself, I wouldn't think it had one. You are correct regarding the clutch weight having about 1/3 of the effect of the same weight on the flywheel.

Is there a gas slide between 4.0 and 5.75?
I am afraid that the 5.75 of the kawasaki is too lean in the Netherlands in the sand.

No negatives to the clutch weight, cheaper too. I liked my 12. Disnt feel like I missed anything, still hit nicely with a stab of the clutch, etc. If you want, I will mod your carb for you, free... done a few, super easy. Just pay postage.

Just go on Rocky Mountain and look at the OEM parts for a 2004 kx125 under carburetor, they have a ton of slides available.

Yes there is, but the slide only is off idle to 1/4 throttle then tappers off to 1/2 throttle. In sand you really need bigger main jetting.

Hey bud, I noticed the black wire un plugged in one of your pictures. Plug it back in and the bike will also run differently with more hit to it.
