Gen 5 Cr500af build

Edited Date/Time 4/9/2019 5:54pm
Hey guys I just recently finished my Cr500af build just thought id post up some pics of the process to get the bike to where she is today. Iv been having a series of back surgeries so hey why not build something to pass the time and to give me the end goal, to be back on a bike.

So i brought a 2010 Crf 250r with a bad motor and some serious lack of style but with the single sided exhaust bulge i was after.
Ended up tearing her down the same day she got home to see what im working with.
I made a jig to get my bike up off the ground and to keep the frame rigid for the welding to come.
I cut out the Y piece.
cut off the mounts and fitted the new pair with the head stay and Y piece and tigged them in place.
made a motor stand so i could flip it back and forth.
Full top and bottom rebuild all moving parts repaced.
rebuilt all the suspension with racetech replacements and stripped the swingarm of all anodising.
sm pro wheel set and some new rubber so she finally rolls and some carbon swingarm guards.

fitted up the motor again with titanium mounting bolts.

excuse the lack of photos over the next few step as i was getting far to excited and carried away with the build haha.

I tigged new tail section exhaust mounts and tucked the tail pipe up as far as i could for a better cosmetic look. Fitted new black plastics and worked on hiding all the wiring and relocating the coil in front of the rear shock.

A set of fresh graphics from skda and behind the scene im modifying some after market radiators to be fit up.

Thanks guys here is how she turned out after a lot more work. Wish I was a member from the beginning of the build so i could have walked you through it in a not so vague fashion but there will be another build very soon. More than happy to answer any questions. Cheers

An absolute professional level of execution. Seems nothing was overlooked outside more images.
Your fabrication and mechanical background is extensive.
I too had misgivings over the black but your graphics look great on them.

Yeah mate its the first set of dark color and matte graphics I have had. I just didn't want the graphics to be to loud and take away from the rest of the bike. Cheers man.

There was definitely a lot of late nights behind the scenes among other projects haha.
Iv always been happy building motors and fabricating for other people its just good to do some work for myself. I have another build in mind so might keep the ball rolling.
I honestly have never really liked black bikes in the past but some reason my bikes seem to be turning black of late. Cheers for the kind words mate she definitely turned out how i envisioned.

If done right (which you did) black can look very nice. Subtle tasteful graphics. Looks like a stealth fighter ready for MX.

Has anyone ever seen this engraving on a cylinder head before? it was on there when I imported the motor from America around Arizona? It has one hell of a porting job done.

Very nice build! A lot nicer than mine! I still have to finish mine up.
I don’t recognize the cylinder engraving but I’m sure someone in here will.
Where did you mount the CDI? I mounted mine in the factory Ecu location but had to do some modding to the aluminum by subframe.
Have you tried different pipes? I had a CPI which made it incredibly fast in the upper range with a very hard hit. I’m now trying a fatty. I’d like to try a dynoport or dpr.

Hey mate I did consider mounting the cdi in the factory position but I decided to tuck it up the inside of the frame above the carb in a alloy cradle i made as its was right next to the coil and hidden away so there was no need to extend any wiring which was a plus.
I haven't yet had the chance to ride while iv been healing from back surgery but hoping soon i can test out a few configurations and appreciate hearing how well other set ups are working for other Cr riders. Sweet ride man Good to see other Cr500af's in the process there definitely something else.

With welding the aluminum did you have to do any type of heat treatment on the frame?I'm a bit ignorant to welding aluminum so please excuse my lack of knowledge. Fortunately I have friends who weld. The Only reason I ask is I'm sitting on a 04 CR 125 and the thought crossed my mind to go with a conversion some time ago
4/9/2019 1:05pm
I personally did not. I’ve heard of some people doing it. Cp500conversions.com should have a kit to do the conversion.

Alot of people believe heat treatment is the way to go but my opinion is that if your using quality materials and a skilled Tig welder that knows the importance of good penetration, you wont have the need to heat treat your frame. Hope that helps.

This is 100% a guess, but that signature is damn near surgical it's so clean, my guess is it was done with a machine with how straight the lines are.

With that in mind, maybe Millennium Technologies (MP=Millennium Porting?). Very, very popular for 2 stroke work in the states but they ship to anywhere.

Cheers for the input mate. I might have to follow that up it could be a possibility. And definitely as you said it looks like it was a machine job the signature is to perfect....
