Okay, angry mob...you can put the torches down, and take the rest of the night off. I think we get the point.

And if you want to keep trying to continue with a, "Oh, you slammed Larry good, but I think I can top that," maybe we should just move it to the Dumbgeon. But again, after the first eight or ten slams, we got the picture.

Personally, I found it very interesting that a guy in his position would put himself out there like that. Very few would. And the ones who would? Well, it'd be so watered-down, you wouldn't want to read it anyways.
I'd rather read a watered down Roger de Coster column than a full strength Brooks whine fest any day of the week, month , year , century.

Agreed... Larry had some courage to sack up to venture into the pit of hell and tangle with the demons of the moto boards. Maybe he should use a phantom writer

Someone sent me the links and I read the column for the first time. There were three entries. Just a quick reaction-

-If there would have been no fuss about it, I would say "Very typical for an MXA web dealy...same look and feel as all the "we like MXA for the honesty" stuff that some fans say they like. (Not my style, but I would see value in it as real info from a racing manager, at least his view that he chooses to communicate.)
-MXA doesn't run it's columns from racing people through a fluff filter. It didn't have whipped cream and a bow on it.
-Larry is not a PR professional, but his opinions seem real.
-Larry is up against a professional, experienced, and networked system that makes sure heretics get harassed until they quit communicating outside the message. Some of the fans that start the whining will not be fans, but they know what buttons to push because fans are reactive and easy to set off.
-Larry's column wasn't on RX.com. That says something already, plus his rider, the only Stewart there is, has a deal to not ride the RX publisher's new series. "Poison the well" situation waiting to happen.
-Larry tried to communicate directly before (right after signing Reed SX only I think?), and the response was the same.
-A lot of the bad feelings fans have about SX only is real, a lot is certainly exploited and encouraged.

(All the ad homos on the previous page didn't say anything new or worth responding to.)

I will tell you right now, this business is a horrible business to be in, politics and whose ass you kiss goes along way. People that are not in it want to be in, and alot of people that are in want out, but since its the only thing they know they are stuck.

Having an industry job used to be a cool gig, now its full of a bunch of elitist, pompus assholes. Guys walk around like they are kings because they have some coveted job, Please.

Mechanics that are nothing more then over glorified parts changers these days rule the pits and act like their shit dont stink. Team managers who are somebody in their own minds act like they are important and they should all be worshiped while out banging everything that walks.

Insiders post on boards and their word is supposed to be gospel ?unquestioned ? Of course you have the wanna be insiders, who kiss their ass and lap up everything they say. I am glad to see when you guys give the elite "insiders" shit. Some need a dose of reality, because in the overall sceme of this big nation, motocross isnt shit. We work in an industry that could dry up tomorrow and 95% of americans wouldnt even know its gone.

Larry Brooks is an ego maniac, he couldnt handle his words being put to the test and he pussed out, truth hurts huh Larry? Why dont you grow some balls and keep doing your artical and let people see what its like to be an "insider" instead of whining in it every chance you get, oh yea, Larry is a whiner, no two ways around that, has been for years.

Please Larry, dont get me fired for this, I know how much pull you have, I read all your self glossing articals.

The connections run like this....and could be why James failed to mention his team and sponsors at last weeks podium interview.

1st James wont ever ever NOT thank something/someone by mistake on the podium.

2nd It was established at Budds Creek national in 07 that the top trio didnt want to ride the outdoors because of the people/politics behind it, otherwise they would love to do outdoors.

3rd. James needs the powers that be to be on his side for future negotiations and its contract time, therefore in distancing himself from rouge manager Brooks he's gaining kudos to be cashed in later.

I see JBS on the Joe Gibbs team next year or on Suzuki if Reed retires/loses the title.

Guyb,

for the record I didn't want this to turn into a Larry Brooks bash fest, that honestly wasn't my motivation. I had no problem with anything he ever wrote in MXA.

My point was only that the industry pays way to much attention to the message boards and that attention is "flaming the fire", so to speak. That was it. My intent was nothing more than that, and I used LB as an example because it was, well, the perfect example.

Same thing happened when he was posting on MT.

He wanted to hook up with people but they have more fun giving him shit (ad homs) and he said "not worth it."

Fans shoot themselves in the foot over and over, and sometimes its not just fans.

It poisons the sport.

I think the industry people that post/read/care about the message boards are shooting the sport in the foot.

So if LB was ran out of MT, good for the people on MT (and this has nothing to do with LCool ....the less industry people that post/read/care about the message boards the better.

Industry people aren't doing us "fans" a favor by posting...we'd be better off if they never even acknowledged us.

In my opinion the popularity of message boards, and the severity of the complaints/razzing etc of industry people is because on occassion the message boards, and even some of the members and/or posts members make get mentioned in the magazines (racerx seems to be the one I see it the most in). It is bringing more and more poeple to the boards....hoping to get mentioned in a mag so they can have their 15 minutes of "fame".

When you give the common fan a chance to say whatever he wants to an industry person, unregulated and with no fear of consequences, they are going to take that opportunity and get every inch they can out of it.

The riders, the team managers/members, magazine journalists/editors/photogs etc would all be better off if they never ever look at the message boards....and as a result, the sport would be better off.

Let us "fans" be fans...and talk and bash and do whatever else we want to do, but don't dignify us by having industry types read/post/care what we post.

Except for the first line or so, you are actually quite right.

But it will never happen, it's too late, and like it or not people who call their businesses "THE sport" won't allow it. Boards that get big enough to get noticed like this one are "message managed" so even if all the "names" left and it looks and reads like a fan site, it won't be. The message is managed in ways you don't see.

The tradition has more than one source and it has changed over time. With SX it has been built into their thinking from the beginning and it's held them back. I heard people say that is what really wrecked things with ESPN but there is certainly more to it. SX, the Movie was a bomb in part for the same reasons-I saw a movie review site that called BS on the film right from the beginning. MX is paranoid of MX sites and ramped up management a few years ago mainly because of a bad experience with an ATV site. Then they turned their eye more to MX boards and I better not go there. I didn't notice it change until the RC fuel flap and I had pissed off the AMA big time..

It's not logical because the boards are not big enough to worry about, but they are still "opinion leaders." People who want to monitor opinion look where they can find it. VitalMX is clearly the best place for that, even if you have to sort through a lot of BoobyM's crap. Smile

And when there are opinion leaders, the message managers are there. It can't be "just a fan site," but it can look and feel like one, and it's that's good enough for you, then it is.

Fair enough. Problem solved.

Except, the rest the sport knows this too. They have opinions, and they may have a message too. For some reason I think a lot of the fussing is them not being given a chance.

There was one OEM team manager a few years ago that would agree with Titan and pretty much said the same things. Let the fans be fans. (Of course, that wasn't want I wanted to here, because I was trying to figure out how to combine the two and make it work. That worked out real good huh?)
TFS,

I don't care much for your conspiracy theories. I don't believe them, and I just don't see the motive.

If the "industry" wanted to sway the "opinions" of the MX fan base they would have to do it on a much broader scale than just the message boards.

As someone pointed out, 99% of Americans don't give a damn about this industry, and of the 1% of the population that do care about this sport, I'd venture that less than 1% of them actually read the message boards (and even less than that post), so for the "industry" to care what such an extremely small percentage of their overall fan base thinks about something, is pure comedy to me. Pure small-time comedy.

The industry shouldn't give a damn what less than 1% of their overall fan base thinks.

The message boards hardly represent the "opinion" of the entire MX fan base. And for the industry to let such a small and insignificant "tail" wag the entire "dog" makes about as much sense as entering you in a beauty contest.

Now, I know you're one that tried to leverage your pull with MT to gain some ground in the industry. You wanted to make the message boards MORE important in the industry. So what I"m saying really goes against the grain with you. But I think you're letting your proverbial ax grinding session cloud your clear thinking.

One thing I can never work out is why message boards are so well known and talked about in the motorbike (specifically dirtbike) industry. In no other sport that i can think of would you hear the best athletes referencing something said by someone on a board, have you ever heard of a coach of a team changing the way they do something because of criticism they got off the internet?!

Seems stupid to me.
That is exactly my point.

That's what Matthes said in his "observations"...He's not going to do it any more because he gets to much crap for it...Here are Matthes words exactly:

"Did you ever read those Larry Brooks MXA columns? Well, treasure that last one and frame it because it will likely be the last one. Brooks told me he’s done with the weekly updates because he just gets too much shit for doing it. He was trying to educate and entertain readers on what happens in a weekend but as we all know, he basically got buried for giving out his honest opinion. I think I know how he feels! Here’s hoping MXA replaces him with Jessica Brewer…"

Can I tell you how stupid that seems to me? Why in the world would someone like Larry Brooks, let what is said on a stupid, meaningless, measage board have any influence on what he does.

Every single fan of mx/sx doesn't read these boards. Does he not realize that less than probably 1% of of all MX/SX fans even read the message boards???? (I'm guessing, but I would be completely surprised if it was more than that). So why would he react to such a small minority?

In my opinion, a person with his position in this industry shouldn't even be reading these boards (neither should any other major player in the industry), let alone stop writing an article because a very small percentage of mx/sx fans that read these boards gave him crap for it.

Anyway, I get slightly annoyed at the way the industry players even care what is said by the very few number of people on the message boards.

I can understand why they do, I've been posting on them for several years now (motoworld, then motodrive, now here) and sometimes I have to step back and remind myself that what goes on here, isn't the "entire mx world"...because after spending time on the boards, it's easy to get sucked in so far that you think that everyone that follows the sport follows the message boards...and it just isn't true.

IF Larry wants to write those articles, then he should write the articles...and stop caring with the few of us that post here even think. Very few of us, know enough about the industry (and especially his team) to even have an opinion worthy of him even caring about.

Anyway, I'm off my soap box now...

Just not worth it to be degraded even if only a handful of people, I don't blame Larry at all. When you hit the races and people walk up and keep reminding you about the dickheads on the message boards razzing you, you say fuck it !

I thought MX upbringing gives you all a thicker skin???

Man, if I stopped writing, talking, commentating because of the intardnet nation, I would be 100% broke.

A guy who had to turn his bikes and rider over to another team just to get the bike dialed in so his rider could win a main should be a little more humble. I mean if we are really going to talk about whats really happens, truth is a bitch.

Please Larry, dont get me fired for this, I know how much pull you have, I read all your self glossing articals.
Oh, too all the people in the MX industry that want out "but since it's the only thing they know" they stay...Take it from a guy that has worked outside the MX industry his entire life...The motocross industry don't have a patent on politics, ass kissing, elitist, pompus assholes, and back stabbing.

No matter WHERE you work, you're going to have to deal with politics, ass kissing, elitist, pompuss assholes and back stabbing. It's a fact of life EVERYONE regardless of the field they work in, has to deal with.

So, if it's just the politics, ass kissing, elitists and pompuss assholes that make you want to leave the MX industry...well, the grass isn't greener on this side of the fence, so you may as well stay where you're at. (If you want to leave for other reasons, then that's your thing).

Stay on message... stay on message..

What is it that you don't believe, specifically?

No one ever said putting a website on "message watch" made sense or is rational.

I know first hand that its true, and why its true. What I wrote a few posts above is accurate and I heard it from the horse's mouth, in detail. The motive is there and it was explained already.

(They don't use the term "message watch." The do use the term "We can't lose control of the message." That's a quote from the source, and the context of the discussion was about websites like this one, and others.)

Guyb is smarter than me. He never liked business news and doesn't like it on here.

As long as the site stays small and disinterested he's good.

You are as leash-free as your options!

Sometimes "off limits" topics disappear quickly, but they are probably just fragile and break on their own.

If you have watched road racing sites over the years, you would notice they totally throw down on that stuff, some over the top. MX sites can't. Not allowed. Explained above so no need to repeat.

ad hom too BTW, fucktard.

What don't I believe?

I'd need these questions answered before I could believe any "conspiracy" is real.

Who is the "industry"? (Is it the AMA? Mags? FIM? Manufactures? Retailers? Suppliers? Journalists? Photogs? Riders? Team Managers? Mechanics? Agents? Promotors? Who exactly is the person/group that wants to control "the message"?....I think the "industry" is all of the above.)

Since there is no clear "owner" or "Leader" of the entire "industry", is it realistic to assume that all the independent parties involved would have the same "message" they want "controlled"? No! The riders would want a different message than the promoters and the magazines a different message than the sactioning bodies, etc.

So again, who, exactly, is trying to not "lose control of the message"? It makes no sense that all the independent parties involved in the industry would unit under a common "message"....

The likelyhood of a conspiracy theory being true is related to the number of people that would have be involved to pull it off (the more people required to pull it off, the less likely it is to be true....because the more people involved the more likely it is someone is going not do their part or spill the beans).

And for your "The industry is trying to contol the message" conspriacy theory to be true, there would have to be far more people on board and involved to actually pull it off.

And even IF (and it is one huge mu fuckin' "IF") your conspiracy theory were true, why in the hell would this industry give a damn what such a small percentage of the fan base even thinks?

Answer those questions?

Calm down.

I explained it enough already and you are just dragging it on and on, plus its obvious all you want to do is argue the opposite forever. Maybe you just want me to name names to make it blow up. I don't want to.

If I wrote a book, you would argue every line of the book. Its not that important. i don't do this anymore and I gave you facts and some hindsight, that's all. I don't have any motive to convince someone who responds like that, or try any harder. What I said is accurate and real, and from first hand experience, and its still real. If you say it ain't so, your choice.
