Ok, to be fair and no disrespect to Reed but the field back in his hay day wasn't this stacked and competitive. It just wasn't. If Reed and Stew went down in the first corner of the main event, they could both come back through the pack and finish first and second. Same for when it was Reed and RC. The top 2 guys were head and shoulders better than the field. They had to go for it in order to beat their other best guy because it almost always came out to who finished first or second each race. Dungey proved that you can win multiple championships and go down as one of the greatest in the history of the sport by taking podiums and not pushing it over the limit. And JS proved that you can lose championships while being the fastest rider on the planet because of when things go wrong, they are catastrophic.
You must've missed SX last year and a number of heroic rides from Tomac.

He made the 'stacked' field his bitch plenty of times! He just Tomac'd, occasionally!

Thanks for posting that. I've never been a big fan but, he's proven me wrong enough that maybe I've learned a lesson.

You just proved my point as being true. Thank you. The fastest rider in the field (Tomac) can lose championships because when they go wrong, they are catastrophic. Dungey proved consistency is the key to winning a championship, as an example see Webb this year. The racing and overall race craft is different in today's field. Can't win the "ship sitting on the couch.

Bro, I broke the tie on your original comment. 100% accurate. As mentioned by others, I do think it's possible that bikes, tracks, and a little bit of attitude could be part of the equation, but it doesn't invalidate your point. It seems like now it's all about which top 5 guy doesn't fuck it up when back then, the top 2 or 3 had to take it from the other.

I have to believe Reed is spot on when he talks about the media attention and more societal changes. Kids are being groomed to be corporate robots at private facilities in the public eye (social media) and any sort of non-PC shit gets hawked on in this era of outrage. That HAS to impact the behavior and psyche, thereby impacting the sport and the way racers race/think/feel. And we are too mainstream to ever go back. IG has brought our visually appealing sport to a wider audience. We're in the cool crowd now. Better stay in line or else we'll get the boot and they will never let us back in the club.
