Home depot sells the chemical gloves that work really well. Thats what I use. I hate the gas smell on my hands also.

I just walk out to the curb and dump it down the drain. It runs off to the back bay so the smell doesn't linger in the street to bug me.

Seriously - I've used rubber gloves before and be it gas or kerosene it always finds it way onto me.........I suppose I could have the wife clean my filters.Smile

I mix with used motor oil and throw in some old tires and Burn a brush pile. Then roast some weiners over the top. W00t

i use gas all the time, then rinse them with the hose. let them air out for a few days.

I used gas to clean them back in the late 70's. Back in the day when you used 10w40 motor oil from the autoparts store to fill your gear box. Then used what was left over to oil your filter, before you slopped the grease all over the lip of it to make sure it would seal.

What fun, especially at the beginning of the season in Michigan in March when it might be 30 - 35 degrees out while you were cleaning that filter outside with gas.

Now I just use the Twin Air Bio stuff. makes it much easier.

for sure have to have the grease on the lip so that it get's a good seal. Don't want any water gettin in there.

The gas or degreaser that your use only cuts the oil and some of the dirt, the soap and water will cut the dirt.
30 years doing that, still do.

my brother in law was cleaning his CR500 filter in his garage, with the door closed, and a kerosene space heater going.... yup

house caught on fire, almost burned it to the ground. he was lucky.


the fumes went to the floor, btw, started at the heater and the blue flame slowly tracked him down where he was wringing out the filter into a bucket. POOF! FIRE!!!!!!!!

FYI...Gasoline expands the PPI...Making your air filter vulnerable to more dirt passing through.

You guys who use Kero and Gas to clean your filter might be in for a surprise when your thumper with clapped out valves backfires and spits through the carb. I saw a guys bike burn to the ground when that happened. And don't think the "backfire screen" is going to save you either.
