Where do the top amateur kids sell their used bikes?

I have pair of 13 KTM's! One supermini with a 109 and one is an 85. Will customize suspension for rider! Bikes were for a LL contender but he broke his leg at the regional last year!

From what I read back in the day guys like Villopoto and Ausin Stroupe basically went through a bike a month (practice/local race bikes). Then at the Nationals they show up and the factory had a separate set of bikes prepped just for those races.

Back at the end of 2009 I moved to Georgia for a job and a buddy of mine worked at a local shop. He mentioned that Earl May had come up from Florida to buy two KX450s because Kawasaki had cut his allotment from 4 to 2 bikes for the 2010 season.

At the end of the day it all comes back to what level the kid is riding on. If you come out of nowhere and win a moto at Loretta's and get two top 5s you might get two KX85s for the next year. Deliver a title and your support will grow.

Jeremy McGrath said he got Team Green support in 1989/1990 which included a 125 and 250. Basically by Loretta's his bikes were roached and he always felt like that held him back. Said he longed to have the support that Damon Bradshaw had.

I live near Club MX and ride the practice facility a lot. You see a ton of their bikes go up for sale. I honestly wouldn't give them half of what they're asking for one of those bikes.

Something to consider is whether or not your rider can utilize what that Supermini or mod bike can put out? Honestly I would say that if your kid can't out run the local C class on an 85 I wouldn't even worry about a Supermini.

Because you can get new bikes that haven't been hammered. Also, you can set the new bike up for your rider as opposed to changing customized bikes from another rider. The vast majority of riders turn faster lap times on stock bikes and you also don't have the possibility of chasing hard to find parts either.

Like many others have already said you don't want any of those bikes high maintenance high cost. A lot of those bikes are running on fuel that would seriously tax your budget as well .Ultimately would only make your kid marginally faster than he is

There are a lot of fresh bikes for sale with under 5hrs after Loretta's and mini o's. Keep in mind the top level kids are going to have good equipment for the nationals. When they age out or move up they sell the bikes. One of the kids living down at Millsaps sold a fully modded 16 JMS YZ 125 for $3500 last year with 20 total hours. A local kid bought it and it now has over 70 and still runs great.

This is why I say its a good idea to buy these bikes. If I can find a deal like that on a few bikes.

Wow this is awesome info. Really interesting to know the dynamic that exists with top kid and their sponsors.

I bought Palmer Neeleys Lotettas practice bike with less than 3 hours with a full pro circuit mod motor on craigslist. Even got to meet Hannah Hodges's because that's who was selling it for Palmer.

IK found some good ones thanks to a few in this thread. Im not bias towards any brand. You know you are getting quality stuff when you buy bikes from some of these mini pro amateur kids. I wsas talking to someone who purchased a few 85s from eli tomac when he was on minis. Said it was the best thing he has ever ridden and the suspension was ridiculous

When I was in Albuquerque New Mexico during the Johnson brothers-Bradley Graham-Corey Dry-Jason Anderson days circa 2000, many of those bikes got sold within the community (hot commodity). I made the mistake of purchasing Bradley Graham-Corey Drys double hammy down supermini, and when it ran it was great. But it ate top ends for breakfast. Rule of thumb, if the bolts look like they have been loosened a thousand times, do not buy.

Not true if you buy the right bikes. Dad bought Greg Rand's 1990 Loretta's bikes after Loretta's. Greg beat Kevin Windham in one class that year and Kevin won the other class. The stock bike was brand new and the mod bike had a full blown Mitch Payton Pro Circuit engine. The mod bike was much easier to ride and faster. A lot longer powerband. And these bikes were nearly new.

Here is a Nother room with him I like to live by buying a top amateurs race or practice bike is like buying a low mileage “slightly used” car from enterprise Rent-A-Car Laughing Laughing

I get it there are always a few exceptions to the rule but they are few and far between mostly it’s inside deals and hook ups for family and friends that get the low hour bikes at a good price the ones that are being sold to the public or generally not as good as they appear to look internally the bikes have a lot of really hard hours on them whether the parts have been replaced or not it’s just wear and tear on the bike itself.

Odds are you have no idea how that racer kids parent or mechanic treated the bike overall usually they don’t get as much love as a normal bike would because they know they are replacing them at the end of the year but like I said there are always exceptions to the rule of course my role as stated above his as follows buying a used near professionally written and race bike is like buying a car from a Rent-A-Car company and we all know how some of us treat Rent-A-Car‘s Woohoo Laughing

They are definitely not getting 10-25 bikes a year, or at least they weren't in the 80's when I worked for Kawi. At that time they got 1 bike for each class they rode.

What you want is to find some for real post Loretta's bikes from a factory amateur. Those kids generally ride new bikes at Loretta's. Buy them a few days after if you can. Many kids will be moving up to 250F's right after that race.
