Yea I pay for the premium for my state, so I get BLM land, private land, all the layers, and can track myself! I didn’t do the whole save maps deal last year but you can bet I will this year!

So for you hunters in this thread what’s some of your other must have or favorite pieces of gear?

My range finder is nice for preseason , i typically have my lanes marked ahead of the season but occasionally have put a stalk on and needed to range a deer. I just started messing around with castile soap and ozone for my clothes.

I 2nd the range finder. I suck at estimating distance especially out west, its nice to have the confidence in the distance.

I did an IBO rules 3d shoot a couple weeks ago and didn't realize how bad I am at judging distance ,I rely on the range finder too much.

Yea a range finder for sure but I also try when I’m out and about saying oh that tree is 28 yards or whatever and then range it to see. I just got into competitive shooting and the first shoot I did was 40 unmarked targets. Thankfully only cost me two arrows but yea I’ll be practicing some more distance judging lol.

If you're wanting to make phone calls, check out the products by Iridium. I believe you can rent them to cut down on some of the costs.

Also, if you're looking for more into on backcountry hunting, check out Rokslide's website and forum. There also is the Gritty Bow podcast (the first 20-25 episodes are a must listen for what you're doing) and Kifaru podcast that go into detail about gear options, sleep shelters, meat care, etc.

Good luck on your hunt!

Thanks for that! I’ve also been binge listening to The Hunt Backcountry podcast which is pretty good!

So I got out yesterday with the wife to do some deer scouting yesterday. From the get go when we got on top we were into deer. Tomorrow I’m off to scout with elk with my old man, work 4 nights then we are gonna take off for a 2 night camping/scouting trip. I found a tent cot for dirt cheap so saves me from packing a tent on the short trips. For now here’s some pics from yesterday.

Looks like you're on to them . When does the season open over that way ? Our boys are still building mass right now and will be in velvet another couple months almost . Our rut usually peaks the first or second week of november with archery starting oct. 1st

Yea our seasons are messed up here in my opinion. I’ll start my archery cow elk tag August 1st and have until the 15th. Archery mule deer runs August 10th through September 9th. Too early in my opinion. I have one more the site just won’t load it but I saw the biggest forky I’ve ever seen before. Ours are still building, lots of stubby head gear. Last year when I was out it was a split, some still in full velvet, some fully hard horned by the 3rd week of August.

Here’s the last pic I was trying to load and sadly it does no justice to this deer. He’s got great mass and deep forks for a forky. Just gotta survive a few more nights of work and me and the old man are off to look for elk. Sometimes it seems the scouting part is just as fun as hunting. We’ve lived in this area for 25 or so years and still are able to find new areas. Plus we have a blast getting out together! 2 nights camping under the stars and no cell service so it’s gonna be nice and stress free!

Garmin InReach is the hot ticket for what you'll be doing.

You mentioned getting "separation" from other hunters. This is exactly why I stopped hunting public land 30 years ago. I had some shit sticks try to shoot me out of my tree stand 30 feet up. They told the game warden they thought I was a white tail as I stood there in orange cap, vest, pants. Had just as bad luck on private property. The owner gave me "exclusive" rights but forgot to mention he also told another guy the same. I was down in a draw slowly walking 6 white tails to a 160 acre plowed field. Easy pickin's. Then 30-30 rounds start hitting all around me. The other guy and his son were uphill brush busting trying to get lucky. Last time I ever hunted.

Gotta bow hunt !!! All the pray and spray hacks are all still home filling their bandoleers . You get all the prime spots and get to hunt the deer in their natural state instead of skittish and afraid of daytime.

Well I wish I was typing this with awesome news and pics but its been unsuccessful in the tag filling department but the hunts alone have been a blast. To the point of why I started this thread I did end up getting the SPOT GEN 3 and I'm pretty happy with it as is the Mrs. My archery cow elk hunt was a disaster. Dead batteries on the truck 2 days in, a trailer wheel and tire coming off at 80 MPH and leaving me stranded on a two lane road were the highlights. The elk definitely knew it was time to hide and the few people I ran into were on the struggle bus. It also has not helped the amount of smoke in Northern Nevada let alone the unit I was hunting has all but burned down.

So I put my head down and focused on my deer tag. First day I went out I was in business and making stalks, I was able to get to 80 yards (prefer 60 max) before I was busted. Day three I snuck in and sat 35 yards from an amazing deer for 3 hrs before he busted out on me and left me no shot. All in all I had a total of 12 stalks in 12 days of hunting and it was an array of things that messed each up. A few stalks I was too impatient and just rushed it. Others were wind changes but my last one I couldn't help but laugh. 58 yards from a bedded buck, facing away from me, was just waiting for him to move when some chukar started cackling behind me and he whipped around to see me drawing back, I drew, anchored in and was setting my pin on him when he whipped around and ran. I was bummed at first but had to laugh at how it all went down. I averaged a little over 2 miles a day on foot for almost 26 miles total of hiking and stalking so tag soup didn't come from a lack of effort. Time to relax a little regroup and get ready for one last hunt in November!

A buddy of mine and his son near Rock River, Yukon this year. Both big but the bigger one scored 230 at 72". I'm planning to tag along next year.
