I totally forgot about you fishing for bass! Holy hell , I knew I should have came back and checked this thread sooner. I'd love to hook up Eddy and do some fishing with you one day if you still do it on and off?. Been trying to get as much advice and information as I can. Doing this target practice stuff is super fun to. I've arranged a couple other things out there ( and mowed my damn yard! ) and spent about 2 hours out there last night. I think I'm finally getting to the point of understanding setup on different weighted lures and so forth , and my accuracy is definitely getting better. Very few back-lashes at all and most are pretty minor when they do happen. Hitting it inside that 5 gallon bucket on the left is tough!

Yeah - I still fish ,just don't have a boat at this time. Gonna get another one eventually.
I went over to Kentucky Lake just the other night for an hour and caught a few from the bank - best one was 3lbs.
If you ever make it down this way let me know - or if I ever make it back up that way I'll get in touch.

As for bass fishing up that way from a small boat like you were thinking.
Kayak bass fishing is becoming a very popular & competitive sport.
Here's some events up that way https://oregonkayakbassfishing.com/events/
It's worth checking out.
Some of the guys setup those kayaks up pretty cool with electronics, rod holders and Panther King Pin Shallow Water Anchors. They deck them out and the neat thing is you can get into areas that you are not able to get into with a regular bass boat. No motor zones and areas where you need a boat with a super skinny draft.

A good little practice lake up that way like I was saying with a large no wake zone - perfect for kayaking or a small inflatable boat is that Henry Hagg lake - there's LMB's in Spotted Bass & Smallmouth in there.

Another area I forgot to mention by where you grew up at is Scapoose bay & also the Multnomah channel.
Both used to hold a decent amount of fish.
Thanks Eddy!! Yeah Hagg lake was one I was pretty interested in hitting. I've actually never been there. Hmm?.......I think I may be hitting it tomorrow now haha.

Also....on the boat thing. I had thought about the kayaks as well , but wanted something I may be able to bring an extra person on. I also have no room really to store it and can't have anything over 11' since that's all my van can haul. I also liked the idea of being able to deflate it and store it inside when the weather gets bad. I really want to hit some of the shallow streams and so forth.....as crawdad fishing is something I've done my whole life.

You mentioned your living " down there "?.......You're not in WA any more? Did you move back to Florida?

That's some beauties right there. Walleye and crappie are my favorite freshwater eatin' fish. Big flakey meat. But I guess I have to admit...a trout straight from the water to the skillet on a mountain morning is damn hard to beat. Never forget, A bad day of fishing is better than a good day at work.

I'm rather new to walleye fishing . We caught those in 25 feet of water ,we trolled at 1.5 MPH and dragged a worm harness on the bottom with a 3 oz. weight rigged with a 3 way. The trout we caught in a small stream ,just find any deep hole and throw a salted minnow ,small stream trout love salted minnows.

The live-streams & weigh-ins are pretty neat to watch.

I think it starts back up in 45 minutes or so.

Then the weigh-ins start live at 4pm Est.

I actually qualified for the First ever Elete qualifier as a co boater and was on Espn and finished 10th on the Harris chain. I also Marshal the Eletes when i can. BASSMASTER classic champ Paul Elias is a good friend and he and Shaw grigsby have stayed at one of my beach houses on Sanibel a few times and i have fished with them many times. Here is some gopro screen shots of me and Paul and some rods he sends me to test out.

This is still the most fun fishing for me . Early fall ,down river after Niagara Falls . I took a few years off but i'm gonna retool and fish salmon in the lower river again . I've had some serious battles down there with 20-25 pound salmon from shore . I only use 12 or 15 pound test line so there is a good chance of breaking the line and forcing you to use finesse . I've had some 20 minute battles that leave your arms like jello .

No not back in Florida. About a year and a half ago I had a brand new home built in Tennessee about an hour from Kentucky Lake & Barkley.

As for Hagg Lake: The Ned Rig works awesome for spotted bass & smallies there.
Using 6lb fluorocarbon.
Anywhere from 6ft of water to 40ft - points and the mouths of the bays & creeks and down any of the shore lines with wood & rock.
Green Pumpkin Jighead - in different weighs depending on depth you are fishing
With these in Green Pumpkin & Canadian Craw.
As for drop-shot - nose hooking these little gulp fry worms(in green pumpkin and watermelon pearl) on a size 1 drop-shot hook works amazing too.

Walleye are bottom fish. Winter time, a brightly colored jig head or spoon tipped with a small frozen minnow or shrimp, jigged 6 - 8 inches off the bottom will produce walleye everytime.

Summer time you'll find them a little higher up but rarely near the surface. Jigging off the bottom works too, but trolling a bottom bouncer with your lure tipped with bait of some kind is very effective.

* this is for lake walleye, tactics will be much different in rivers or streams. I almost only fish lakes.

Moved to TN.....dang! Had no idea you were planning on going there. Congrat's on the new house and stuff man. That part of the countyry is pretty damn nice from what I've heard.

And thanks again Eddy on all the fishing advice. Heading out now to go and try and pick up everything you listed above. Hitting Hagg lake tomorrow if this weather holds out. Plan on heading out early and hiking around that lake as much as possible and make a nice long day out of it.

One other question.....coming from Portland , you have any advice on some good lakes to fish , where I could setup camp and stay for 3 - 4 days? I don't have a 4x4 , just my big cargo van , so I have to be able to drive to it. Plan on doing a lot of this , this summer.

Lots of walleye, pike and burbot (we call them ling) around here to go with some of the best trout fishing in the world. A lot of people won't eat burbot as they aren't the most attractive fish. Delicious though and a true, freshwater cod. I've caught them with different critters in them as they are voracious predators. A three foot garter snake, ducklings and one with the tail of a pike sticking out of it's mouth and half digested in it's belly.

Picture is the world record burbot caught in Deifenbaker Lake, Saskatchewan.

Thanks - Yeah it's a little different down here, pretty laid back.
Sorta reminds me of growing up in the 80's & early 90's up in the Northwest.

As for places to camp at lakes/rivers that have bass in them in Oregon...
I'm not much into camping - but Le Page Park Campground might be a good spot
it's on the John Day - tons of smallmouth in that area.
The John Day
https://www.recreation.gov/recreationalAreaDetails.do?contractCode=NRSO…

Coastal lakes...Like Devils Lake near Lincoln city.
Both Siiltcoos & Ten Mile lake have campgrounds I believe also.
Cullaby lake near seaside at the beach may have camping too.

The only 2 places I know of that are within an hour or so of PDX is mainly in Washington state.
You'd have to get a Washington fishing license.
But there's Battleground Lake (theres spotted bass & LMB's) ,Silver Lake(you need a boat - not many bank spots - but theres LMB's in there and some spotted bass - main pattern is is mainly flipping the pads).

In Washington a bit father away....
All along hwy 14 from Beacon Rock all the way to Crow Bute - there's camping places.
All that rocky shoreline holds smallmouth - the Wishram area is very good fishing - not sure about camping but you could probably find somewhere to park and camp.

Or you could literally start bank fishing and around Beacon Rock...then just get in your van and head east and stop at any spot that looks good. Just fish lots of areas covering water and shoreline from the bank- next best thing to being in a boat. Then just find a campground.
There's also little lakes on the Washington side all down hwy 14....plus tons of bank fishing spots on the main river.
They start around Franz lake/Skamania county...
You have Green Leaf,Grant Lake,Drano Lake, Tunnel Lake,Mouth Of The White Salmon River,Bingen Harbor,,Rowland Lake,Hewett,Mouth Of The Klickitat River,Horsetheif Lake(probably the best lake along there).

Get on google maps and check it out.

Funny story about a ling. We were bottom fishing in the ocean about 10 years ago , and were doing really good with the sea perch , rock cod and so forth , except for one of our buddies. He couldn't get a fish on his line no matter what , after everyone else had caught 3 - 5 fish already. Then all of a sudden he gets this beautiful perch on , gets it close to the boat and BAM!.......out of nowhere , this big ling cod comes up and rips that perch right off his line. When he reeled it in , there was just a set of perch lips on his hook.

I've come to the conclusion that I need a boat of some type. I went fishing at Hagg lake all day yesterday , and there is so much of that lake I can't get to for fishing. Lot's of cliff's every where and brush right on the shore line. It didn't help that every person within a 100 mile radius was there playing in the water. Place was packed , and I hit it on a bad day. About 90 degree's out. I got 3 fish on the line , and landed the 3rd one. The first one was definitely the biggest as it yarded my pole really hard , and I'm almost positive he hit my lure before It even touched the water ( was using a top water Cicada ). 2nd and 3rd were close to the same size , which were about 2lbs. Not big , but it was my first in a long time , so I cleaned right there on the shore line , took it home and cooked it up. Really good!

Fishing from the shore , in the very few spots I could find was pretty fun , but I only got to hit maybe 1 out of 10 spots , because either someone else was fishing , or people were just playing in the water. Next time I go , it'll be cooler , overcast and on a week day.......hopefully in something that floats! And gawd dang.....legs are feeling it today , as I think I hiked a good 8 - 10 miles!

I've got no input on the baitcaster thing as I'm a fly guy, but always down to talk fishing! Up here in Alaska salmon is king, but we have some great rainbow fishing as well, pike, arctic char, grayling, etc.

This is a king I caught with my dad last summer on the Kenai

Sockeye, the best eating salmon IMO

Spawned out pink, too easy

Never gets old!

My painter at work is hard core into fishing, out in his boat at a tournament nearly every weekend. It's as bad as MX when we used to be racing spring and fall series for years on end and fitting practice days in between. He actually picks up a few grand here and there along the way though where I always seemed to just be spending a few grand here and there.Laughing

Looking forward to some fish tales.

By the way, is that your burn pile next to the garage? I used to have a friend who had a burn pile next to his garage. Did I mention he used to have a garage?
We do some kayak tournaments up and down some rivers. Fun stuff, but tough.

Holy shit! A 45lb trout!?? I don't know all that much about huge trout , but that has to be one of the biggest I've ever seen. That's trophy size in my eye's.

Speaking of.....I have been stocking up a bit on my trout gear as well. I finished a really tough two week job yesterday , and went out and spoiled myself a little on a couple new reels. Picked up a new Lew's Pro Magnesium Speed Spool and a Shimano Stradic FK Spinning Reel. Both of these reel's are so freakin' nice! I'm trying to get myself all setup to do both bass and trout , with some other fish.

Right on man. Tomorrow I'll have a couple spare hours and take that reel and my carbon pro over to the park for some practice shooting and just setting them up. Want to work out any kinks if I find some.

And man..... I'll tell you what. This Lew's Magnesium carbon pro.....blows the doors off my Mach crush reel! I mean there is like no comparison. Tuning is so much more advanced and the length of that tuning is way more thought out. I'm way more sharp with my cast. I also hooked this thing up to a medium light / moderate action Berkley lightning rod , which only cost $40.00.......super light and is one awesome combo! Shit!!!......I can't wait to get back to the lake!!

Fishing last week with my buddy when we got into the walleye ,he hands me a pole to use for the day , looked and felt really nice . It had some kind of shimano bait caster with an electronic counter on it ,i'm also familiar with St.Croix and how much the different models cost but didn't really add any numbers up in my head. When we got back to the dock and he was putting gear away he asked how the 500 dollar set up felt . I did feel nice but not 500 dollar nice . My salmon set up with a 9' 6" St. Croix with the stradic is around 300 total . I decided not to buy St.Croix anymore for lower river fishing . The gander salmon/steelhead poles are guaranteed for life and they replace at the store , St. Croix makes you jump through hoops to get a repair/fix. The gander near my house is about to reopen under their new name ,ill check out if the gander branded poles still carry the same warranty .
