Fascinating stuff, Iv'e got to admit I wouldn't have the guts though! I admire you for pushing the boat out and really doing things different, whatever life you're living it doesn't look boring. Stay safe man.

Talk about timing!!!! I actually came here today to start a thread asking if you went to Syria or not. I remembered it yesterday and just now got a free moment to inquire.

Hopefully you’ll upload more pictures from this trip as I always enjoy your pictures and commentary.
Thanks guys! Really appreciate it! If it gets annoying, please let me know. I just love the trips and the stories, so it is nice to have some fellow vital members to share them with Smile
I haven’t uploaded the pictures from the GoPro yet so there may be some cool ones on it. But I will post a few more from my camera in the meantime.

So sad, and creepy at the same time, does anyone live there?

There are some old women who have moved back, as their houses aren't within the radioactive areas. They aren't mean to be there, but the government looks past it as they just want to live their last years where they grew up. Some of these locations were very strange. You could enter the house, but the trees outside where off limits as they had taken lots of radiation through their leaves and roots. Most of the zone is lethal, so you need a guide.

Thanks mate. It really isn’t that hard or dangerous as people think. People are always friendly and well meaning no matter where you go. We think it is the opposite from watching news and listening to politicians. But I can honestly say that luckily the vast majority of people everywhere are nice, and if they don’t like you they will usually keep away. The only times I have felt things were scetchy were night time in the streets of Honduras. That country is rough. Incredibly beatiful, but a toilet at the same time. Also, at a truck stop between Texas and Louisiana things got really weird once. It wasn’t dangerous, just a really weird experience Laughing

Between Texas and Louisiana can be quite frightening, and I live in Texas.

Wow....cryptic. I’m sure there are places with deeper and darker histories but Russia seems up there.

Hiking in the Iranian mountains is very harmless. It has been my favourite country so far! Everyone should go there. It has received an unfair bad rep in the west imo. Being a visitor there they will care for you like no other place in the world. SO friendly and safe. They like Westerners too, even local mullahs were nice and friendly, shaking my hand on the street in the holy shia city of Mashhad. There is no «kufar» mentality like you find in the Gulf countries
Out of curiosity, what was your experience in the Gulf?

Thanks for the pictures, that place has always fascinated me. Watching videos on YouTube of tourists walking through these location is pretty eerie.

Was there anything specifically that interested you most while you were there? Do the guides need to bring with a Geiger counter to be safe, or are they fairly confident in where you're walking through?

Well, let me just point out that Oman is an exception. They are very friendly. My gf did find the men frightening though. If she walked too far away from me they would look, yell and be unpleasant.

Qatar, UAE, Kuwait and Bahrain have been downers to be honest. You are looked at as an infidel not worthy of their time, and they will either look at you with hate, or look through you (generalising here). Many will not answer you if you ask for directions or other trivial things. In the UAE there are seperate lines for locals (first serve) and foreigners. They have Sharia law so in altercation you word as a non believer is worth less than a womans word. I also feel like the countries are artificial, it’s all oil money and they just waste it. The nice people are usually foreign workers or people looking to make some money. Most of the time the licals don’t work anyways, so shops are ran by foreigners

The plant itself was awesome to see. Got to eat lunch in the cantina next door. Very cool experience. Pripyat was also an obvious highlight, seeing the pool and the theatre was special.

We had Geiger counters, but I think the guides had a very good idea of where to go, so it was more for our entertainment really. sometimes the Geiger counters went berzerk Smile

Haha, yeah that particular place was quite unpleasant. But it was intersting to experience. Also saw the worlds biggest and strangest shaped turd in a clogged up toilet at the same place. Like a big, gray baby’s head. Sorry, just had to share, never seen anything like it, surprised not to find the guy dead beside it after squeezing Out a boulder like that Pinch

Was everything kind of what you expected it to be going in, or were caught off guard by some stuff (scale/destruction)?

It was a little different. I didn't expect there to be so much activity around the plant itself. They are still working on it, shutting down the other reactors, and doing maintenance and preparing the new dome (which is underneath the current new dome)
The city of Pripyat was really cool. Eery, but fascinating at the same time.
What surprised me the most was how we look at it vs Ukrainians. It is a sore subject, and a legacy they have been left with from the Soviet era, which they would rather not have. Communism and Crimea was bad enough in a way. So the trick to go there is to be respectful, and not treat it like a freak show.

So far total costs from the accident have amounted to 18billion dollars. Russia and Europe have contributed a lot, but now that they have control, they are afraid they will have to handle the costs themselves. Ukraine is piss poor, so their only option is to say "we cannot afford it, and if it goes pear shaped, others will be affected again". That way the rest of the world will contribute to contain the radioactivity within the sarcophagus

Uploaded some from the GoPro. Not done though. There are a couple of locations I haven’t posted from, but the GoPro was out of battery during uploading.
I hated the GoPro at first, but now that I know how to use the app, and film instead of taking pictures, I really like it. You just pull out stills from the videos and voila - no more closed eyes or ugly selfies
