PDS, no linkage fail.
No linkage on small bikes like the 65s makes perfect sense.

It’s funny what people will call junk. The TC65s I’ve seen at the track seem to be doing fine, getting good starts and finishing well...& it seems the well maintained ones are typical Austrian stuff: tough.

I’ve got No Problem reaffirming the fact that mini-racing has become WAY TOO EXPENSIVE; but, this new YZ65 coming in at $4.6K doesn’t help that problem one bit.

For my money? The good ol’ KX65 at $3500 can be had all damn day. A little bit of cylinder/head work w/ a pipe or pipe mods and it screams. As for the stock class at Loretta’s? Ya better buy whatever the fastest is. Again, I’d still put my kid on the KX & invest in his/her riding skills by finding him/her a great instructor that USMCA certified. But, hey that’s just me.

As for the Cobra? I see that they’re fast. Really fast; but, it sounds like they’re a pain in the rear to maintain.

So, whatever you get and whatever you go racing on: Good Luck & I’ll see you out there.

"For your money" until you actually have a decently fast 65 rider then the tune always changes. No amount of instruction will overcome the horribly dated suspension on the KX65 . Ive been through the 65 ranks twice and my boys have ran them all. Above the beginner class in moto you are going to fight diminishing returns dumping money into making the KX handle especially whoops. I know, Ryder D did it though! I have seen so many moto dads try and deny the reality only to show uponeday on orange/white including myself. Cheaper in the long run.

That said, I completely agree the 50-85 class bikes are getting up there in price and it's hurting the sport. I bought new 250f's this year cheaper than I could buy a new KTM 85. I am hoping the new YZ85 is decent so we can switch for next year. My boy loves his 85sx's and they are easy to work on but it would love to try something different. Loved the older YZ85 with my older boy.......

I really don't know much about the 65cc game.
Looking to learn before my 2 year education becomes a real world experience.
I have no brand loyalty whatsoever really. In big bikes I've always leaned towards Hondas but ride a Kawi currently.

For my boys who are now 13 & 16 we tried pretty much every color on minis. Polini, Cobra, KTM, Husky, Kawi are ones we owned and at least rode any other ones to test.
In 50's the Cobra's were great! I don't think anyone can argue though the frames don't break easily? Much of it on the 50's is due to the swingarm running a bushing vs a bearing and it starts binding which transfers stress to other areas but on both our Cobra 50's & 65 I was always checking it over and re-welding tabs & pieces. Not just one ours but other bikes also. The CX65 is also extremely wide & bulky. Engine wise they scream & the factory guys are extremely helpful.
The 16+ KTM/Husky is a great package performance wise other than the air forks(no experience as we had a 16). I hope the YZ65 is a true competitor for it and from the specs it should be..............

My son moved to 85s this year a year early because he wanted to ride Kawasaki and it’s without a doubt the best move we’ve made. The build quality of the kx is far superior to the little ktms and I’d guess the yz65 will be the same. A couple of pounds in weight is a small price to pay for Japanese build quality and reliability (and decent brakes) if you ask me.
I'm posting way to much in this thread since I am not really a racing fan boy but enjoy talking mini bikes.

Seriously curious as I tried a newer KX85 and hated working on it with a passion. I still help a buddy whose kid races them and am constantly amazed at how bad they are. I don't think the 50/85 build comparison is really fair but 85-85 the KX is the worst - How is any of this superior build quality?
No removeable subframe
No rebound adjustment on forks (even the '03 YZ85 had this)
Cylinder ports packed full of casting flaws.
Non-case reed engine design
Can't get to carb easily because of frame brace to jet
Cylinder is wedged in so tight you have to strip bike down to remove

That's just off the top of my head. I think for the most part the big 4 build a cleaner bike but I wouldn't ever use the KX85 as an example.............

I think your right on the KX65, its had a longer model run than the original KX60 had. (84-2000, to 01-18)

its a good solid bike for a learner, someone that is racing lower levels or trail riding,

Anyone's kid ridden one yet? I know they're not released yet, but they are being ridden somewhere.

CR125s weren’t available anymore 10 years ago and the year before they sold for $5500. So I’m assuming he meant that $4999 CR125s could be had not long ago, 10 years ago.

Tom711.
We race allot of woods here in Virginia and even though there is allot of ktms most people will agree with you. I have a friend that bought new KTMs 65s last year and now he is going to 85s and he says the 65s were the last ktms he will ever own. This year i'm sponsoring a little guy that moved to 65s this year and I could have had any color but we ended up on green. He loves it and so far it has been dead reliable.

First Win is in the pocket for the YZ65! Today a little kid won the Dutch Championship with the bike with a double moto win!

Beating all the KTM's and Husky's straight up!

Hey what pricing are people seeing?
Just got a quote for $5499 OTD here in NorCal. I know it’s a new bike and I’d be ok at MSRP but I’m going to pass at that price.

Heard the dealer near us was getting 4 of them,And they were paid for ASAP.

Wouldn’t make since for the dealers to sell them cheap if they are gonna sell out

I'd be willing to bet the spread between MSRP and dealer invoice is less than or close to $ 500........Margin on kids bikes is zilch.

I would love to get my son a new YZ65. I would pay MSRP or buy a 2018 KTM65. Anyone know when the Midwest is getting some?
