hey, Im looking to move to North Carolina, Specificially the Wilmington Area and my major concern is the amount of moto tracks.
I currently live in Southern California where they are by the plentyful and am worried about there not being enough local tracks.
Im not much of a trail rider, specifically tracks.I have been to Weinerts before but that is all i know if in the area.

I am leaning towards Wilmingotn area but if there arent any decent tracks near here then i would probably be persuaded into either the Charlotte or Raleigh area.

Any input of tracks from local riders would be appreciated.

like you I live in the San Diego area and have seriously looked in to relocating to the Charlotte area. Been in SD for 30 years and feeling stale! N.C. and the Charlotte area is very appealing for many reasons. I would have all my activity bases covered there, not to mention much more affordable housing. Reading this thread has me all revved up again.....dammit I shouldn't have clicked on it. lol

To each their own, but my family moved from SD to the Charlotte area when I was a kid. Now that I'm an adult I moved myself back to San Diego. I just couldnt live in NC anymore. I really regret not being raised in SoCal with the beach and mountains right there! Although a lot of people love NC. You can get close to a mansion out there for what you get for a 800 sq home here in SD. But I myself would never move back to NC. There's just sooo much more to do here in CA. NC is pretty boring if you ask me. Have to drive pretty far to get to anywhere you want to go. As far as the beach, mountains or tracks are concerned. Thats just my very very biased opinion though. ha

Hey, I grew up in Waxhaw! Haven’t moved too far away (Ballantyne/Pineville area now), but did you ever happen to ride at the Waxhaw track down Rehobeth a little ways? I believe it was owned by Performance Honda (now Kevin Powell Motorsports) a long time ago, wonder what happened to it.
.
Nice, keep me posted on that if you can, I’m pretty interested in hitting it up again to mess around for old times sake. I rode there a few times in high school, around 2007ish for me, but every time I went I was with someone who was on their roster of allowed riders.

One time I went up there myself with my bike in the truck, curious to see if I could pay for a membership and ride, and the guy running it was pretty short with me and basically told me to scram before I could explain myself. I’m guessing he had quite a few people ride back there without permission, probably thought I was doing the same, so I can’t blame how he was acting. But after Barbara at TNT one time threatened to charge my friends with theft for riding one of the tracks without paying, there was no way I’d ever let some shit like that happen again. (Posted about that in the recent thread about TNT, funny story.)

If you guys can get something figured out there, let me know, I’d love to hit it up again.

Dang man, that's a pretty large radius within NC to base where you end up living based on the amount of moto tracks in the area Laughing I assume you're a serious racer?? I live in South Charlotte area and went to college at UNC Wilmington (graduated 10 yrs ago, so not positive what tracks are still around there).

Raleigh/Durham area is probably the most centralized to the most tracks, where as Wilmington is on the coast so your options are more limited. However, Charlotte is pretty much in the center of North & South Carolina combined, so you've got quick access to ClubMX in Chesterfield, SC (ClubMX is amazing if you haven't been). Also, lots of tracks in the Greenville/Spartanburg area of South Carolina, which is just a couple hours down I-85

Charlotte is a really, really nice place to live. Traffic can be heavy, but the city and most surrounding suburbs are nice and modern with lots of new construction. I've got a soft spot for Wilmington though; beach town, college town. Did I mention there's a beach and college girls galore?? Laughing

(this isn't all the tracks, just the ones google grabbed)

I used to work for Vance Earl not far from you. There’s lots of great tracks around that area. A lot of private tracks but if you know the right people, then it’s mostly not a problem. You’ve also got Mole Creek, Iron City, Cathy’s Creek, Traveles Rest MX and several others I can’t think of right now.
I have ridden at Vances place a few times and was suppose to ride there the day after I got hurt which really pissed me off and a friend was waiting for me at the gas station and called my phone and my wife told him. Vances track on the side of the hill is fun! Im to chicken to ride his massive GNCC stuff!!! LOL

The people that run Cathys Creek now run Iron City too

I came down to the High Point NC area to to look at a Kawasaki shop that was for sale and after exploring the area ended up moving down.

We bought a 3 year old 3000 sq ft house for $4k more than we sold our 1800 sq ft town house for back in MD.

So funny! A buddy of mine grew up in LA. He said going to the beach in the Carolinas compared to the west coast makes him feel like he's went to Tijuana for the day. Two different worlds.

I'm actually from Ellerbe North Carolina. Windy Hill was the first track I ever rode in 2003. Moved to Indian Trail about 4 years ago, love it here though. Close enough to Charlotte to work but far enough away so that I don't lose my shit with people standing too close to me waiting in a line.

I live in the Hemby Bridge area, my Step Daughter goes to Porter Ridge High School. Where did you live around here? When did you move? I'm only 33 years old we quite possibly have passed each other riding back in the day.

Oh man that place is so much fun! Next time you go over ask him to take you around loop 1. Once hunting season is up they open up the entire trail. A lap time is roughly 20 minutes or so on that loop. But you got that right, it’s definitely been ridden on for 20+ years! Makes a good place to get some practice in before going to a hare scramble!

mad10 , I'm born & raised in monroe NC, moved to San diego CA 2012-2017, now back in Monroe, NC.

I appreciate both areas for different reasons... NC has better XC mtb trails, mx tracks have more elevation, but its not sunny & 75 everyday like socal... MY traffic in CA was better than NC however I rode a bicycle or motorcycle everyday there. In NC I ride a motorcycle or truck everyday, not safe on a bicycle to commute and too far.

Was that Lee's Kawasaki? Technically was in Thomasville but was about a tenth of a mile from the High Point city limits? Or the old Kawasaki of Greensboro that SRS Motorsports in Greensboro bought? I actually worked at SRS for a bit back in 2009.

I grew up in Thomasville and my parents still live there. The Kawasaki shop I'm talking about turned into a boat place about 10 years ago, then back into a motorcycle shop called "Cycle Stuff" for a little bit before going back to boats for a bit. I moved to N Wilkesboro for a while and eventually to WV for my job, but have driven past there a few times when I come to visit my parents. I was down last weekend and drove past there. Looked like it had became one of those "Sweepstakes" places but closed and the building is for sale.

I lived really close to Lake Park... I went to sun valley and would of went to porter ridge if I stayed in public high school. Graduated in 07. I stopped riding around 2002 but then picked it back up again around 2010. I would mainly ride at Cedar Carin, Wide Open and TNT.

Cedar lol. Been there a time or two. Went once last year. I’ve also ridden a private track in waxhaw. Not sure if it’s the same as you guys were talking about. I’m North if you guys. Right around Mtn Island lake area where mecklenburg / Gaston county comes together.

It wasn’t when I went - maybe the ‘finish line jump’ could of been considered an ax style jump but the rest of the track was pretty tame. Of course that’s all just an opinion. I rode a trick tank a good bit back in the day so that’s more my opinion of ax- take it for what it’s worth haha.

It was Lee’s Kawasaki. The son was very nice but dad Lee refused to show us a few years of business records and part of the Kawasaki application was a prediction on what you thought the business would do. Kawasaki even called him and told him we had passed but had to have that last part filled out. He still refused and they went belly up.

Thank you everyone for the input as it is extremely helpful.
I am headed to all 3 cities in a few weeks and it is assuring to know that wilmington has enough possibilites within a 2 hour drive because i think that is where i will most like to live,

I really appreciate all the responses.
Thanks again,

Checkout Battery Park Off-road if you get a chance. Trails and tracks. It’s 2.5 hrs from Wilmington and has camping.

F150Motocrosser, Dude, you need to shoot me a text. I just bought a bike after being way from the sport for a while and found the track on google earth. I drove their last week, and approached G*** B*****e, Mrs. B***** son. Gave him my number and he told me that somebody would reach out to me about leasing information, but that I was cool to ride it in the mean time until they get things figured out.

Did he give you my number? Going out there tomorrow

I never really had any negative experiences there but I could definitely see that judging by some vibes I got, even as a teenager back then. Honestly didn’t go there much though. My dad and I rode KTMs when it wasn’t cool since we were woods riders, and would drive to Cycle Goodies in Winston Salem for our KTM stuff. Lee’s was a KTM dealer for a while but didn’t really stock much of anything KTM since it wasn’t a big money maker at that time.

Back on topic: I’ll give another recommendation for Battery Park. Great place with a good bit of variety (Moto and woods, both tight and open) I know the OP said they weren’t really into woods but it’s good practice even if you don’t race off-road... and who knows, may learn to love it!

Raleigh-Durham, NC (January 9, 2018) – North Carolina Motorsports Park announced the inaugural “Carolina Motofest,” set to take place on Labor Day weekend. This AMA- sanctioned event, held from Friday, August 31 – Monday, September 3, will set a new standard for fun racing. Carolina MotoFest will be the only event in the U.S. to feature Grand Prix motocross, Sprint Enduro, and EnduroCross* in an exciting three-day weekend.

“Let’s see who is the best at MotoFest,” said Mark Czysz, owner of North Carolina Motorsports Park (NCMP). The event will allow competitors to test their skills in three disciplines of off-road racing. Riders can compete in anywhere from one to all three of the events; however, only one Grand Champion will be crowned that is successful in all three types of racing.

“We took all of our experience with EnduroCross, Extreme Enduro, Grand Prix motocross, amateur motocross and motorsports festivals to create an event that will bring an exceptional level of fun to amateur racers. We also believe it will provide an unmatched challenge for the top Pro racers in the country,” said Tom Zielinski, co- creator of the Carolina MotoFest.

In addition to three great days of racing and nightly entertainment, Carolina MotoFest will hold a riding school on Friday, August 31. Sign up early to take advantage of learning from some of the greatest off-road and motocross athletes in the country. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Carolina MotoFest was built around the premise that motorcycle racers are ready to try something new. This event is the unique approach that many racers have been looking for, as it connects off-road and motocross communities with an event that everyone can enjoy. “The event encompasses competition and entertainment for all. We’re focused on providing a family atmosphere. There will be a variety of racing classes, nightly bands, and everything in between,” stated Mark Czysz.

North Carolina Motorsports Park has been a regional hot spot for more than a decade, hosting such prestigious events as Loretta Lynn Amateur Qualifiers. NCMP will be pulling out all of the stops for the Carolina MotoFest, constructing a special EnduroCross course, two-plus mile Grand Prix track, and one-of-a-kind Spring Enduro course.

Throughout the weekend there will be opportunities to support Destry Abbott’s DA8 Strong foundation and pick up DA8 Strong swag. Look for details on classes, how to sign up, camping, and other exciting additions at www.ncmp.net in the coming weeks.
