He's referring to amateur motocross, not GNCC.

I think you are exactly on the mark. For SX and MX in the US, there is 1 pro series for both. For offroad guys, there's NEPG, GNCC, Hare & Hound, WORCS, and others I don't even know off the top of my head.

On top of that, these are not spectator friendly races for the most part. You have to hike out into the woods/desert and see the fast guys blow by you and then they're gone. There are a few specific races where they have awesome spectator areas such as the Moose Run and a few GNCC's, but nothing like the Black Water 100 used to be.

I'm optimistic though for off-road. 2-strokes are still highly competitive and participation is growing steadily with solid events getting bigger and bigger. Even our local race is getting 200+ riders! I heard there were ~900+ riders in total at the Ironman GNCC on the amateur day??? On the flip side of that, specific events are getting larger and larger spectator turnouts as well. TKO, Moose Run and a number of GNCC's are getting quite a few spectators based on the level of difficulty they pose and the unique venue the host. I could definitely see the atmosphere for the Black Water 100 rise again, which provides a huge economy bump for these small towns and provides promotors a heck of a revenue for a single event.

It actually makes sense that an amateur winning national championships makes more than when he is finishing 9-12 in a pro race.

My bad I wasn’t talking about GNCC, I was referring to MX. The “Heard” part came out of a couple factory racers mouths.

was told by an amateur riders dad that the rider needed to buy a house before the year was over or else he would get screwed on taxes. He also signed the biggest amateur contract ever when he signed with his current team. He'll be racing pro after Loretta's next year.
