Hey guys,
I have a potential career opportunity in downtown San Diego, and besides a few visits to see family, have never really scouted the area for where people live and ride.
Any help you can offer on where to live/ drive time to tracks/ commute - drive info/ nice areas - bad areas etc. would be awesome!

I just freaking LOVE SD!!! I've worked there for a few months back in the 90's, & it's jut 5 1/2 hrs from PHX. We go there twice a year. I was in a sailing club on Harbor Island for 7-8 years up until last year. We always stay in PB at The Beach Cottages.
We looked at SFH's to purchase a few years ago for a rental, never materialized.
Great music scene, great weather, great food. Traffic is getting bad though.
I listen to 91X off their APP 3-4 times a week.
What work will you be doing?
If my wife and I decide to go, it will be for an Executive director/Manager position at a natual gas utility.
Grew up in North / East County San Diego and moved to Leucadia (north Encinitas) as soon as I was old enough. I've bounced around quite a bit since then but if I ever land back in SD it wont be anywhere but the Encinitas / Leucadia area.

If I ever end up back there – which is highly doubtful – I'd probably look someplace like Poway. It's a bit inland, and hot as balls in summer, but I've always liked it there.
Pala is 15 minutes away from me. Probably 45 minutes from down town. I'm not sure if there are any other tracks closer to San Diego. Cahuilla Creek and Glen Helen would be a 2 hour trip if you're down town.
Working downtown you'll probably want to be more south for commuting. Pick a few areas and check out googlemaps traffic at the times you'd be commuting to get an idea. I found it's pretty accurate. I'd recommend renting for a few months before buying (if that's your goal) just to get the feel of different areas.
Plenty of tracks within 2 hrs. For offroad, Ocotillo wells is about an hour and a half and Glamis is 3 hrs. Other OHV areas within 2hrs or less. This is important for me since my girls ride with me and they wouldn't fare well on tracks.
My only regret is that we didn't move here years ago. I would've loved to be here in my 20s. But at least my daughter gets to grow up here.
If you get a job in downtown, be prepared for some traffic getting in and out. It's not as bad as LA, but getting worse all the time.
I work with plenty of people who come in to work no problem (leave early) but when they go back home to somewhere like East County, it is 90-100 degrees when it's 80-85 at my place. Some of these people have $200+ electric bill a month from running AC all the time.
Well.... The Roots were playing at the Observratory in North Park on a Tuesday, so I said what the hell, and went.... with no ticket. They were sold out, but was given a VIP ticket by a stranger. Hit a few bars with the new friends afterwards and had a blast. That arcade bar was awesome.
I would love to be in the North Park area, just can't justify 500k for a 1000 sq. foot house I'd have to gut.....
Thank you everyone for the input!!!!
Jamul is awesome! It is an unincorporated town in East County, San Diego. It feels very rural but you're only 30 mins away from downtown. The only drawback is that, a casino was just opened in the area and traffic has increased.
I also love Alpine, CA. The community there is very welcoming and there are many motocross enthusiasts.
Finally, the coastal communities in North County are cool too. I have a few close friends who live in La Costa and Encinitas and they love it. I like it too but I don't enjoy the traffic on the 5.
Like anything there are good areas and bad ones. In San Diego, It's crazy how just driving down a few streets will transform in socioeconomic conditions.
Overall, San Diego is an awesome place to live and raise a family. I've grown up here my entire life and I have never been bored.
Pit Row
I do like SD though great cliamate.
Anyways, the climate is great though. Can't beat it
Also depends on your budget as to where you want to live. Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Encinitas, all great places. Do you have kids? Is the school system important? There are nice areas in San Marcos, Vista, Escondido, Oceanside, but you have to look. Carlsbad is great also. How long are you willing to drive every day? I personally would look in the North County area. You have MX, surf, ski (water and snow), mountain biking, road biking, rock climbing, hiking, kayaking,
just about anything withing 1 1/2-2 hours driving time. Also, if you are in the right area people are great.

many folks move away and decide CA really is that much better but can't
afford to come back. What do you miss most?
