Stamford police continue to investigate the brutal chimpanzee attack that sent a woman to the hospital.

Monday evening, Stamford police shot and killed "Travis," a 15-year pet chimpanzee owned by Sandra Herold after the animal viciously attacked 55-year-old Charla Nash, a manager at Herold's towing firm who knew the chimp well.

Travis was the company mascot. He was featured on one of the tow trucks and even had a playroom upstairs.

The victim had worked for Sandra Herold for a number of years. In the area she's known as Charly and is very well-liked.

"It's sad, I feel sad for Sandy, especially sad for Charly. The whole thing is terrible…," said Mike Grant of Shippan Auto Body.

Police believe Travis may have attacked Nash because she had recently changed her appearance.

"From what I understand, she had her hair dyed. Perhaps Travis didn't realize it was her. Travis was very protective of Sandy, very protective," said Donald Parker of Bill's Auto Towing.

Police continue to investigate but don't anticipate filing any charges.

Near the scene of the attack a man left bouquets of flowers and a relative of Herold spoke briefly, saying "She's not good, nobody's good, it's a tragic situation."

An owner of a neighboring business also feels for Travis. He first met the chimp in 1994 and with his wife watched him grow into a 200-pound adult.

"Sandra Herold raised Travis like a child," he said.

She grabbed a knife and stabbed the animal several times, trying to stop it from attacking the victim.

"It was probably the last thing she wanted to do but the first thing she had to do. The whole thing is terrible," Grant said.

In 2003, Travis escaped from Herold's SUV and cavorted around downtown Stamford for two hours. He had no history of violence.

In chimpdom they are brutal to one another when on a mission. When the males go on a hunt around their territory they will try to get a member from a rival group and they do ritual like dismemberment to the victim. They usually bite off the face, genitalia and fingers.

I once seen a chimp named Clyde kick the shit out a whole motorcycle gang, shit on a policeman's car seat, strip a Cadillac apart with his bare hands, break into a zoo to kidnap a female chimp and swing from a chandelier in a hotel while beating his chest. They are some crazy bastards.

I'll have to make a mental note to carry when visiting the local chimps.
Actually- are chimps a "normal" pet in some parts of the US? Otherwise, I'm thinking that it's pretty damn unlikely I'll run into one anytime soon.

Since you seem to be the resident chimp expert, is there a good offense or defense for dealing with an angry chimp, besides a 40cal?

Not an expert, just was around them during research and reading Goodall studies. Some people have them as pets, and they tend to get mean with age. I would not want to deal with one. Have you seen the pics of that guy that was attacked by the chimp that was with his former chimp, he looks like a monster.

I remember reading/hearing about that one. The guy that was attacked did virtually nothing to defend himself, but instead tried to reason with the chimps as they ripped his face, fingers, and (I think) genetalia off.

They are something like 5 times stronger than a human, maybe more. Not really much he could have done, it ripped his foot off. I saw some pics of him a while back and he is missing his nose. The only time people should have them is when they are young and in studies. They need to be placed into zoo's or sanctuaries for not only our protection but theirs.
If you saw them in the cages (research) I saw them you would have been shocked.

In the background the chimp can be heard grunting.

"Who's killing your friend?,'' the emergency operator asks.

"My chimpanzee! He ripped her apart! Shoot him, shoot him!''

Once police arrive at Ms Hergold's home in Stamford, Connecticut, an officer radios back after seeing the bloodied Ms Nash on the ground: "There's a man down. He doesn't look good.''

"We've got to get this guy out of here. He's got no face.''

Ms Hergold had attempted to wrestle Travis off Ms Nash and after placing the call to police had also stabbed her pet with a carving knife and hit him with a shovel without stopping the assault.

"He looked at me like, 'Mum, what did you do?''' Ms Hergold told NBC's Today Show overnight.

"It was horrific what happened and I had to do what I had to do, but still, I'll miss him for the rest of my life.''

Eventually Travis ran off but when police arrived and tried to protect the injured woman Travis attacked them, forcing officers into their cars.

The chimpanzee ripped the side mirror off one police vehicle before opening a car door and forcing a cornered officer to shoot the animal several times.

Leaving a trail of blood Travis retreated to his living quarters where he died.
