Hey all, hope I am posting in the correct forum, please move if not. I am in the midst of a restore on a '78 Rm125c and have a few questions.
First off the rubber handlebar mounts are shabby. Replacing them isn't a hard thing to find but for the cost I would like to eliminate the rubbers altogether if I could. I understand I can up to a later version front end but for now I was wondering if anyone has found a "current" item like a poly or alumi part that will retro fit the "78 mounts? Second question is concerning the case halves. I am yet to join my 2 parts back together and am thinking with the hear say with common air leaks should I be doing something more than a gasket and proper torque? Any other tips or advice will be welcomed, thanks..

Just put a washer or 2 behind the not and crank them down tight. This will stop most of the flex.
RE: Case.....Yamabond, lightly on the center case gasket. I never had issues with combo on any of my RM's from 1977 thru 2004.

Be easy with the Yamabond. It can run and get messy, I never used it and never had issues on my RMs. The gasket worked fine. Only bikes like YZs and KXs with no gasket I had to use it.
I like to take a tap and chase the threads on all the case screws while the engine is apart. If I had a old RM id replace the Phillips case screws with 8mm head bolts.I always got paranoid with the reed in my Suzukis hanging out inside the cases and I'd Loc Tite the reed screws so they would stay put.

Lap the gasket surfaces of each care half. You'll be surprised how much the surface flatness is off.

Thanks for the reply, the cases have been re-aquanted with a thin layer of yamabond equivalent. All is well in that dept. Also came up with a fix for my handlebar grommets for now.

So, I am not really in love with the fenders design of the 78 or 79 rm's. I have the front figured out but what are people using in place of the stock 78 rear? 1977-1980?

Use a 77 rear and Petty Tony D fender in the front

I like the 78 rear fender to match the 78 tank. It has to be stronger than the 77 fender because of the bends in its design. I was not a fan of the 79 plastics one bit

I have the 78 rear although it appears to be the oe part after I stripped the paint off of it. It's not nearly as ugly as the 79 fender but something about it I can't get over.
