Thanks for the heads up, Mike. The pipe looks like it's bent at the first turn out of the exhaust manifold, but it might be repairable, so I shot the seller an offer for $50.

I see several peeps are having problems with the water pump corrosion in their CR's. Read on & I will lead you to the finish line...

Firs off let me say that several of you that have posted in this thread have done an amazing job on restoring your CR's. My hat is off to you!

I too had probs with the corrosion. The magnesium acts as an anode & want to plate the inside of the cooling system. The fix is simple, once you have fixed the water pump area and have cleaned out the radiators.

1. Do not use any coolant with water in it. PERIOD!

All premixed coolant that I have run across has SOME amount of water in it.

2. Make sure that the cooling system is devoid of ALL water.

This means exactly that. Not a drop in the rads, pump or cylinder & head.

3. Use Evans Waterless Coolant

http://www.evanscooling.com/products/coolants/

I have been using this coolant for years in my Honda's & have nary of a corrosion issue since.

Your Welcome! LOL

does the later model v force reed block DEFINITELY fit the 87 model? wanting to get one if so- I managed to get a brand new pro circuit front pipe and dep silencer for it, now looking for either a boyeson rad valve or v force reed block. Has anyone on here actually fitted either of these? do they make much difference? and what year model fits? can only find the later model ones listed
thanks

spoke to Mark at PC, they still have stamps for the 87's, the product is still offered. the problem is they need 25 orders to make it cost effective. I put my name on the list for one, but who knows when they will actually have enough backorders to start a production run.

I bought one off e bay that was made for a Honda 3 wheeler that bolted right up. Made a huge difference in the motor and the way it pulled on top. My power valve was closed shut though when I bought the bike also and it ran like a sled. I have a 1987 PC pipe and almost brand new stock silencer if interested.

my power valve wasnt set up correctly when i got the bike either! its a strange set up to be fair. And thanks for the offer, but i have a brand new pro circuit front pipe and a brand new DEP silencer already! someone in the uk had pro circuit make a run of 10 pipes so that worked out pretty good for me.

Will see if i can try a second hand reed block to check fitment first then get one ordered! need to get it running 100% perfect for farleigh castle vets motocross des nations in september

thanks again

With the '87 the key is the powervalve working correctly after the clutch cover corrosion issues have been addressed.

I want to run a '90-1 cylinder on mine (which used to be Dana's bike, the subject of this thred).

I'm not sure if the VF3 reed black makes much difference. Could be an interplay with the PV set-up.

Hello everyone. Not sure if anyone still looks in here bUT I have a pretty big problem I think with my 87' cr250r. I am getting ZERO compression. Like I can crank the kicker with my hand no problem. About december/January I went out riding at carnegie in CA for some hillclimbs and I noticed when I first got there my bike was running really eraticly acting almost as if it had no gas when in fact I was running race fuel. (Which I have done many other times with no issues) and on my first ride of the day I got maybe 1k yards and the bike just died. I sat there for a good 15 minutes trying to Kickstart it as well as roll start and neither worked. The muffler would barely sputter if at all. I am wondering if anyone has any advice on the Pistons and such for these bikes. I can definitely post pictures of my bike if needed. Thanks!

Barkhard do you know which rear brake pedal will work on the 87 model as well ? Was not sure if a newer one might work as the 90 model is still available.

That's going to be a tough one. We never looked at different years. Changes to the frame could mean a different pivot point for the brake which you may not be able to adjust out.

Bike as it sits now. Found an HRC front Numberplate and changed to hi Polish Renthal bars. Also got a TMV rear master cover and one of the New Tecnosel seatcovers which I am not ecstatic about. I have a VRP aluminum box subframe but haven't had time to mount.

Will be selling some parts for the 87 here soon. 281-750-1705

I didnt see an official thread for this bike, so Im posting here. Just did a trade for this one (77rm125) For this area this would be considered a great find. It is rare to see any 80's hondas that are not dumpster material. On this one, everything is there, plus a few extra bits such as acerbis fork guards, pc chrome pipe, skid plate, pipe guard. Plastics are salvageable but it would appear the pump cover is rotted, as there some extra sealant around the impeller area.
Kicker and brake petal have a low amount of slop, rads look great,
1 side of the swingarm has some of the lower area missing, like it was ground off? Strange. Is this a 1 year only?
I cant believe some of the parts that are still available from honda, fenders, levers, clutch perch, fork boots.
Anyone have the frame paint code handy?
Cheers

I was just shown this....

It's a dissimilar metal issue

The softer metal becomes a sacrificial anode

There are ways to help this.

You CAN run an antifreeze with water, as long as it has the proper corrosion inhibitors.

One solution we have found that works is actually incredibly simple, take the water pump cover and have the inside powder coated. DO NOT have the edge, where the gasket sits, done. If you do it won't fit together right.
Had many customers call on this issue and suggested this fix and they've reported problem resolved.

Evans will help, because it has no water, but because there is no water in it, it runs hotter. Your engine will run hotter. This cannot be disputed. Imagine if you poured 100% Prestone into your engine with no water, do you think it will run cooler or hotter? Same concept. BUT, because there is no water, it eliminates corrosion.
Catch-22, huh?

Want a hotter running engine and all the negatives that come with that, or another solution that actually fixes the issue rather than mask it?

If anyone wants to call and discuss this, feel free

Happy New Year
