I did catch the interviews James gave saying he loved the outdoors but couldn't ride them because his team is doing SX only.

Fan of both of them but keep this in mind:
Larocco spent the end of his career doing sx only deals during a GOOD economy.
I'm amazed by the people that refuse to look at reeds stats.
Nevermind its during the RC & James era.
With all due respect to LaRocco, that's false. He never won the 125 or AMA SX title. He won both the 250 and 500 series when those title ran short seasons of about five or six races each.

In the early to mid-90's, he was bad fast at SX and a threat to win any race he entered.
This was before the consistent 3rd-6th place finisher that be became towards the end of his career and is commonly remembered as now.
It was not uncommon for Larocco to match McGrath's laptimes and in many cases actually reel him in, her just often ran out of laps.
In '95 he was only 16 points down on McGrath at round 10 or so in Charlotte (and had some momentum built up) when he cased a triple and broke his wrist. And that's AFTER he DNF'd an early round due to a bike failure.
.......then he signed with Suzuki for '96.
"And to be brutally honest, when I go riding during the week, I’m still faster than everybody that I go riding with. The thing is, those guys work so hard and they show up on the weekend and they do what they have to do and then on Monday morning you talk to them and they’re so pissed off and they’re so bummed. And that’s the thing: I honestly miss the racing, but I don’t miss the bullshit. Monday morning when you’re talking to them, all they want to do is just unload and vent. They’re like, “Man, the track was shit. The track did this. And this guy did this.” They’re not having fun. They’re just out there going through motions. That’s why I like the results the way they are, because I think everybody is going through the motions. Everybody is over it. The tracks are the same every year, they get worse and worse. I’ve seen them on TV and I tell you my couch feels awesome compared to those tracks."
By the way, I'm not one of the people who has a problem with a rider choosing to do SX only. Sure, it disappoint me not to see a talented contender not be in the mix, and riders shouldn't be surprised if fans express that disappointment. I think Reed at the time was reacting to the giref that he got, but PR wise he would have been better served by saying he can't do everything and he really valued to opportunity to pursue his home country's SX series to give something back to his homeland.
I agree that it's disappointing when some of the top guys don't ride outdoors. I prefer seeing the best of the best go at it, even if one guy (like RC or Stewart) is running away with it. At least then you know that you're seeing the absolute fastest anyone in the world can circulate that track at that time.
