Been meaning to post this for a few years....How was that Bubba Scrub sequence shot that came out a few years ago? I can think of a few ways to do it, but what way was used in that awesome photo?

The easiest way is to mount the camera on a tripod, shoot a bunch of frames, shift-drag them all into the same Photoshop file and then mask away everything but the rider in all but the bottom layer. Can you hand hold it? Yeah but it's a mountain more work, even the small amount of movement it takes to follow a rider over a jump is going to change the perspective on everything.

That's what I figured, but I also thought that someone would write a batch for that style of PS work....kind of like "Photomerge" or "Merge to HDL". It would be really easy to do if you shot it against a blue sky, but a bitch if you shot with the crowd in the back ground.

Also, I was thinking that some other program might have some cool tool to do it that I have not seen.

Thanks

I've been wanting to try this also.

What type of settings do you use and where/how do you focus to keep all frames crisp? I'm assuming you set up the camera/tripod to get the whole jump in frame and just fire away without following the rider at all.

I have that print, it's like 7' long by 2' tall.
Peter Foley shot it if I'm not mistaken.

Can anyone post this sequence Picture?

a tripod is the way to go, if you have one with you that is. I've done a bunch of sequences without them and it takes much more time in Photoshop lining things up.

If you do have a tripod try 1000th shutter, manual exp mode (do a couple test frames to check before the big jump) manual focus on the middle of the jump area, DO NOT AUTO FOCUS! use a wired release to fire the camera and start shooting right before the rider hits the take off and keep shooting a couple frames after he lands. Try setting your motordrive to 5 or 6 fps.

Thanks Paul!!! That was my biggest concern, focusing and the technique tips are great. I am going to get a buddy of mine to jump a few dozen times until I get it right.

When Peter first posted the merge on MT back then, it was pretty rough; you could see the sky wasn't blended well on the transitions, but Peter or whoever did the post production at Fox really cleaned it up well. It was sort of a merge/stack combo, because I'm pretty sure he hand held it and panned, which made it a panorama. He did another variation the following year on the Chuck Sun jump, very wide angle, and shooting while standing on the rails of the flag stand with someone steadying him. He seemed like a nice guy, I think he mainly shot skate and snowboard, but I'm not sure.

I bought at least three of those posters when Fox was selling them, and still have two NOS never removed from the tubes. Can't find a digital image on the net.

It would for sure be easier to do the PP now, particularly if you shot from a tripod, with CS4. I can't remember the key stroke, but I think if you drag an image on top of another as you if you were manually doing HDR, and hold the right key, it locks the images into alignment.

The easiest & best way to do a shot like that is to use the free software from this site:

autostitch.net or some pay software based on their engine. Of course you still have to doctor it up a bit in PS. I use it to make panoramas or the fake multiple exposures.

I have used that autostitch software, however I have never tried one like this. I have used it to make pano shots or similar shots of very large structures that I am too close to. When using it for a sequence shot like your example, does it just overlay them or do you have to do somthing special?

It's really just a pano with a moving object in the frame!!!

The picture above, I just followed the rider while holding down the shutter = 6 shots. Make sure each frame overlaps each other just like a pano.
