Set up KTM 450 SXF for enduro/trail riding

Hi

I got a KTM 450 SXF 2017 and ride mostly motocross but I am thinking about swiching to enduro since we doesnt got any good mx tracks in my area. Tired of traveling hours to ride a nice track. I want to be able to ride both enduro and motocross so I dont want to sell the bike for a exc at the moment.

The main problem with the sxf is that it stalls easy in the woods. So I googled a bit and found that swiching flywheel or adding a weight to the flywheel will do the trick. I doesnt find any flywheels but I found these 5 ounce weights from steahlyoffroad.com. Will 5 ounce be enough?

I saw there is a "Dungey edition" for the 13-15 bike and it has options of 8, 12 or 15 ounces.

And what about the clutch, I read someone swiching out some alu plates to steel plates.. anyone tried this?

You may want to look at the Rekluse EXP 3.0 clutch for your bike.

Yeah maybe its an option.. I thought it was mostly for novice riders but I dont know.. I have been racing both enduro and mx for 15 years and been doing some pro races and stuff with good results.

Someone tried rekluse on a 450 mx bike? What did u think?

I am in a similar situation, recently picked up a 2014 Husky FC450 to ride on trails. The only actual difference between the XC and the SX is bigger gas tank, kickstand, 18" rear wheel, some suspension valving. (on the XC) I think the 16+ bikes have a taller 5th gear in the tranny. Anyways, you'll probably want to get some handguards, Enduro Engineering makes some great ones, skid plate, you'll probably want to get some springs to soften up the ride. You'd be amazed how much more enjoyable singletrack is when your bike is sprung for enduro rather than huge jumps at the track. As mentioned a rekluse will help if you like steep gnarly stuff, you can always go down a tooth on the front sprocket to slow it down a bit. If you're really crazy you can actually add a 6th gear out of the 450 EXC and they say the bike will do 80-90 mph LOL.

I have tryed to make mx bikes into enduro bikes. You end up spending about the price of a 2000-2010 Yz 250. Then you go to track on your beat up, worn tire, oversized tank, bark buster , bent up mx bike and hate it.

Hand guards (do not need full bark busters), skid plate, flywheel weight if you choose, up a few teeth in the rear, lighter spring rate in the rear and you will be fine. I've raced off-road for years on modified mx bikes and have done well.

-Raising the idle will help tremendously with the stalling
-Adjusting the TPS will help tremendously with the stalling
-Adding a flywheel will help as it adds inertia
-Adding a Rekluse will eliminate 'all' risk of stalling, there is nothing "novice" about them
-A Midwest Clever Lever also helps with the stalling
-Changing the gearing will also help with the stalling

These are a few things you can do to help with stalling...

Thanks for your advices everybody! I was out riding today in really slow, technical terrain and it was fun but as I said earlirer I have to use the clutch all the time and after 30min I was pritty tired in my index finger. I tested to use my fuck you finger and it worked pritty good. But anyway, I would like the clutch to be softer to pull.. is it possible in any way?

I did look at midwest levers but you have to pull it all the way to the handlebar to work so I dont think I would like it, it becomes a very long pull.

I cleaned and greased the clutchlever today so it works smooth but the cluth itself is pretty stiff.

I have ordered a 8 oz flywheel, think that will solve the stall issue pritty good, I will also raise the idle a bit.

The rekluse is 1100 usd where I live, pretty expensive, so I will wait and see how it goes with the flywheel first.

I looked att the KTM 450 EXC and it looks very nice, probably a much better engine for enduro than my bikes got but I ride some mx too so I think keeping the sxf is the best choice as long as I wanna ride mx.

I think your bike has the DDS clutch? If it does pop the cover off and look and see what position the front plate is on. Where the bolts to hold the spring are there would be an x,y,z position. If the screws are in the y or z put them in the x. The plate is stepped to put preload on the spring washer and account for wear. X is least amount of preload and the easiest lever pull.

Go up a few teeth on the rear sprocket, that'll keep you from having to use the clutch so much.
BTW, KTM's have an adjustable chain guide, so when you go to a bigger sprocket make sure you move the chain guide down. It'll save on some wear.
