Siezed spokes...

Edited Date/Time 4/28/2017 9:35am
13 rmz 250 with stock excell wheels, several spoke nipples are froze up and some are loose and causing me flats. Can i order all new spokes and just replace 1 at a time and have it be true when i get around the whole wheel? Or do i need to have a specialist relace the new spokes? Thanks for any tips or tricks

You can replace individual spokes, but if I'm going to go through the hassle disassembling a wheel, I am going to replace all the spokes. Wheel truing is a bit of an artform, but it's not impossible to learn. I built bicycles during college to pay for my racing, so I got good at it. Check youtube for instructional videos.

There is a cheap way that has worked for me several times. Spray penetrating lube on the frozen nipples and let it sit overnight . Clamp a vice grip onto the spoke (very tight). Then tighten the nipple with spoke wrench while holding vice grip. Just an option:/

Take the tire and rim strip off. Heat the spoke nipple with a butane torch. Remove hear, let cool for a minute, and the cool further with penetrating oil. Holding spoke wirh a vice grip while turning nipple with wrench most seized spokes will loosen this way.

I used heat gun & PB blaster! Just heat the spoke nipple & hit it with PB blaster!

For a first timer would it be easier to replace all the spokes 1 at a time, remove a spoke, put the new one in and tighten it and do that all the way around the wheel.?

If the wheel is fairly true and the other spokes aren't seized, then I would agree that replacing one or two seized spokes would be best for your situation. As someone else mentioned, cutting the seized spoke with a bolt cutter works well. Tighten the new spokes to the same torque as the others. If you have a bend or a concentricity issue, remember that the rim will move to equalize tension. I hope this helps.
