One thing that is so impressive to me is when Dungey did not win a championship he finished 2nd or 3rd. His "bad" seasons were seasons almost any rider in the history of the sport would love to have.

That's funny. I have learned not to start a thread about TITles thanks to a few of you guys. I thought that was Jeff Emig with the camera when I first saw this and I started to wonder what Fro was doing with a camera when Dungey didn't have any racing leathers on. Then I realized this was from the ESPN magazine shoot! Old age is starting to play tricks with my eyes and thought process it seems.

That is something people almost criticize him for, but is really impressive when you look at his stats! I looked at his individual race stats and was really surprised how good it was. Race after race, year after year was like 2,3,2,2,2,2,1,2,2,1,2,2,1,1,1,2,1,1,1,4,1,2,2,2,3,2,4,2,2,2,3,1,3,1,2,2,2,1,1,1, but went on like this for his entire career. Only RC4 has a linear path as good, or better, when you look at consistent quality finishes.

Exactly why I don't understand people that criticize Dungey for some of the titles he's won.

SX and MX seasons are long and grueling. It's a battle of attrition.

And I don't care who you are, if you are winning titles at that level you are one bad mofo. The worst guy on the gate for a main event would show up at any racetrack in the country and smoke everybody.

That is the smartest and wise comment I have heard from a youngster. You are absolutely right. I remember watching Wil Hahn when he was still an amateur absolutely flying at a Saturday practice in Nacona, Tx. I didn't see how it was possible anyone could go faster. Then he turned pro a month or so later and was about a top twenty guy for about his first year. Made me think about just how incredible the podium guys were.

I try to stay out of these keyboard wars concerning riders because I'm a fan of anyone that can do what these guys do. They're amazing athletes.

With that said RV didn't need Aldon Baker to beat Dungey. In 2010, when RV broke his leg, he was clearly faster than Dungey hands down. Dungey being the rider that he is, was in a position to manage that championship. Villo had to ride all out (kind of like ET3 right now) to make up those points. Any time a rider has to step it up that much something bad is bound to happen, especially on these 450s. I hope Eli can keep it on two wheels but Dungey's strength is keeping the risk factor in check and bringing the championship home without going to the ragged edge to do so. The clock is about to strike 12 though, he's going to have to go to def con 5 to win this championship because it doesn't look like Tomac is interested in 2nd place.

My only criticism of Dungey isn't even related to him. Its related to his competition making it easy on him to win his titles. Don't dig a huge hole in the first 3 rounds to allow him to manage a championship and bring it home without even having to take chances. You can't fault him for being smart, in shape, and fast enough to win it. I'm glad Tomac stepped it up this year, I hope he can keep it going and take the momentum outdoors.

I think you may have touched on Dungey's gift, racing at a pace that is as close to the edge without being in level ten danger zone. Villopotto said something like, (that) 'in supercross your danger is at an all time high all the time.' I watched the 2010 season recently and Villopotto was riding faster at the point in the season that he got hurt! Dungey was real close though and that forced RV to push so much that even in the race he got hurt he made a desperate dive into a corner that took him and Dungey down. You also are the first person that I have heard bring up 2010 as a comparison to this year! Me and my buddy have been talking about it for about 3 or 4 weeks, and we keep wondering if "this" is the race that Tomac is going to throw it away. Not wishing that on Tomac, just saying that Dungey just is at a level where a lot of guys have not been able to push pass the danger point and come out OK on the other side. I do think that Dungey is capable in a must-win situation to raise his speed to who he is racing! I haven't seen Dungey do it much but I have seen him a few times bring his top speed up a level. Minneapolis in 2013 where he battled RV for the win, Vegas shootout even was amazing in 2008 where he actually was behind RV about 5 seconds but managed to catch and pass him in the end. I think if RD5 has to beat ET3 in one race for the championship, I think he can match ET3's speed. But, ET3 can win too. It would be a dream race.

Why were all those people injured while Dungey was winning those titties? Wink Because it's tough to run Dungey's pace, let alone be faster. RV ended up needing Aldon to beat him but couldn't stand Aldons routine so he retired. Stewart can't bring himself to make a comeback because he'll have to run Dungey's pace. And we all saw what he thought of Aldon's program. Poor JLaw had him beat but couldn't keep his head screwed on straight enough to run Dungey's pace. Roczen is seeing the bad side of pushing the limits at the moment. Tomac has a streak going, but it has gone bad for Eli so many times in the past.

Reality is, no one is really as good as Dungey. They all have their moments of brilliance, and even some championships, but Dungey is always there, nipping at their heels, season after season after season. Indoors, and out. He may not be the one wowing the shit out of you doing crazy ass stuff week after week, but at some point everyone will end up being impressed as hell with him.

Did I mention crazy shit?

Great post, spot on.

Thanks for sharing that. I had never read that, which is surprising. Great insight and stats, although statistically Dungey has had his 2 best SX years since that article! But still, it is spot on to the foundation of RD5.

Ryan Dungey gets a lot of hate for winning titles when people have gotten hurt! That has happened a few times but he still had to battle Roczen the year Tomac was hurt and he earned that title! Stewart got hurt the year he won the 2012 MX title but Dungey had been neck and neck with JS7 up until he was hurt! I think RD earned that title too! People forget that Dungey has had bad luck too, like last MX season when he was hurt in Colorado! Does that mean that Roczen title wasn't earned? No, he stayed healthy and earned it! People also forget that RD should have won the 2011 450 MX title except for the freaky bad luck he had! He lost the title to RV by 12 points but RD lost 25 points when his bike died 1/4 lap from the finish at Freestone, and lost about 10 more points when his bike didn't show up until the 1st lap was almost over at Southwick! People never say anything negative about the 3 premiere titles Chad Reed has won, however, in 2004 when he won his first SX title RC4 was injured and not racing! In 2008 Chad won his 2nd title, JS7 was out that year! Then in 2009 Chad won his first MX title, but RV2 was hurt, and JS7 didn't choose to race! To me Chad earned those titles but why no hate like Dungey gets? Dungey has 7 premiere titles and 1 ltes SX title! He has 12 lites SX wins, and 79 combined big bike wins (7 more than RV)! Dungey is considered one of the cleanest riders and one of the sports hardest working! RD5 deserves to be included among the greatest all time in the sport!

I was just watching this race and I was thinking about how Dungey never beaten any of the greatest at all. Then I came here and this topic was on top.

He's never been the fastest and I think that's what fans are expecting from a champ. Scoring podiums and titles is only good for the team and sponsors, not for us.

Evel Knievel said that, 'there are people that can sing louder and longer than Elvis, but who gives a damn!' He was answering a question about there being people jumping longer distances than him and why would anyone want to see him jump a distance already accomplished. If you want to be the man you've got to beat the man, so I would say with 7 big bike titles that the Dunge has been FMOTP several times.

He is 4th on the all time wins list ahead of RV who is 5th. He isn't far behind JS7 and MC on the wins list and could pass MC this year! So, though he is known for consistently being a podium guy, he doesn't get enough credit for the actual wins and titles he has. I could post a video of later that same year Dungey leaving JS7 in the dust at Red Bud where at least Dungey was on JS7's tail at Freestone.

What this guy said...We always think about how dominant RC - Stewart - Villopoto were because they won titles based purely on speed.

Dougie D - I've been thinking about 2010 ever since Eli won his second race this year. I was thinking "man he needs to tone it down, you don't have to win by 20 seconds." I just keep reverting back to the idea that if you push it 100% of the time something is going to come up to bite you.

I'm just really happy we have a points battle at the end of the season.

He has plenty of titles too! RC is first, RV is 2nd, and if Dungey wins this SX title he will tie MC for 3rd in premiere titles with 8. I'm not saying Dungey is greater than RV2 . I stated the fact RD5 has 7 more wins combined in the premiere classes than RV2 so that people would see he is not just a consistent podium guy, and that he has won a lot too. I think RV2 may be the best all around rider ever or 2nd to RC4 and (JS7 for a single season may have been the greatest but crashed out too much to be the best ever), but I think Dungey should be included as one of the top 5 greatest ever!

But what do you remember if you think about these numbers? Anything exciting, spectacular? No, just dominating the series because fastest guys were hurt. That's the fact and you can't deny it.

And James at Red But wasn't the same James, you probably watched The Moto Inside The Outdoors too many times, guy was out of the championship and out of the shape after wrist injury.

Anyway, I was a big fan of Dungey when he was on Suzuki but since he went to KTM he was so much politically correct, that fake smile on every podium, playing a role model... we all hate that. I think 2011 was his best season, lost MX title only because of the mechanical, he was really head to head with Poto all year long, he was kinda badass then. Now guy is just boring.

Doesn't make him the fastest as it takes a combination of speed and consistency. The problem is that people put a premium on out right speed, yourself and the OP included, when the reality is that consistency is just as impressive.

Yes Reed has lost 3 titles by single digit points, 1 of those years he was docked 25 points for a fuel violation, the next year RC received the same penalty then had the decision reversed. I consider Chad unlucky and RC lucky, had the decisions gone the other way there would be no arguments about RC's nickname (GOAT).
Just for the record, Reed won the title the year he was docked points. It was 2004 and Kevin Windham finished second in points
