Hi, new member here.
I stumbled across this forum while searching
Around for all the info I can find on the new 450. I don't belive everything I read lol but this auto decomp issue has poped up on one of the magazine tests where they said two bikes broke. I'm a little concerned . I am waiting on the next shipment as there are none available at present only the rx.
What led to this on yours ,and in particular how were you kicking it when it happen ? I spoke to a Honda dealer last week about it really just to get an idea on how good Honda are at looking after a customer if something like this occurred despite a 30 day parts only warranty. I was reassured that if it's a known problem and does not necessarily have to be a recall they are very good . Still a concern non the less . You said you work in a Honda dealer , Im sure everyone in this thread would like to no how this goes so please keep us posted. I have to wait a while yet to ride red again , April ! But I no after many bikes and many years it will suit what I like I just can see myself maybe cracking at the last week lol.

I first wanna say this is a great bike! And the case breaking does not change my mind, I had just did a 20 minute moto and stopped to speak to a friend of mine on the track, I found the Honda to be a little difficult to start when it's hot and slow steady kicks make it light up easy, I gave it one slow kick and the bike didn't start, second slow kick it backfired kicked back and cracked the case

I spoke with American Honda and they were very helpfull and asked a bunch of questions, and being American Honda they took care of everything for me, that alone says everything about the company, I'm sending them my cracked case and I'm just waiting on a gasket kit to rebuild the motor

I really don't know how to avoid this from happening again and as far as getting an electric start, I really don't think I want one, I have faith that Honda will fix the problem
Do you have a picture of the crack? I'll know where to look for a crack once the spring arrive up north.

Wow... honda needs to come up with a new casting and be ready to deliver cases to every owner. Thats ridiculous. Even if a decomp mechanism fails, the cases shouldnt come apart. I Bought mine after new years from a high volume dealer that sold a dozen before mine - fingers crossed.

This is a real concern , hmmm
Mine due April in nz I'm tempted to pull the plug . Sucks I loved the feel on the 16 but I ride Yamaha and a ktm but 15 models .
I'm only 70kg and a vet I no it's the best suited to me and what I like . It's a long down time even if they cover it then some bikes will have no problem . Still a risk in my mind'thoughts ?? 17 ktm just so dear over here . I want a light 450

I wouldn't pull the plug, I'm confident Honda addressed it, and the bike is really nice man, ride one you won't be disappointed

Hey bud, No bike should crack it's case if the auto decomp let's go regardless.
The Yamaha always needed to be taken to tdc and a good strong kick.
There saying the Honda only needs a easy one , but definitely gentle on the kick to its at tdc first then easy one right though I'd stick to.

I was told that the trick to starting these bikes is giving it ZERO throttle. I think cracking the throttle also causes the kick back.

I've had mine kick back, and I don't touch the throttle. Only seems to happen on the mild or regular map. I'll be leaving it on aggressive

Fuel injected bikes you do not need to give throttle. They say its a 2 - 3 kick process for all FI bikes. 1 or 2 kicks to fuel and 1 to fire. My 17' started super easy with zero effort on 2 kicks if wasnt on the 1st. Way easier to kick then my 09 or my 13

Thats dead right! Those maps I would think will be rich off the bottom , aggressive will be leaner hence being snappy. Good info on maps and kick back . I'm thinking I'm just going to get mine straight on the hrc turning kit and clean up the maps. A freind who is a top rider ' in nz rode the rx and said it's jearky off the bottom so is the r some say.
I'm also going to look into Tokyo mods remap?
