I bought a 2013 300 xc a few months ago. After riding it a quite a few times Im noticing that it doesnt seem to rev out all the way almost like its hitting a limiter and falling on its face at WOT. Im coming from a 250xc and was told I shouldn't really notice a difference in how much they rev. Things I know, supposedly the bike was swapped with a 250sx cdi, bike is jetted 175 main 40 pilot at sea level (pulled them and cleaned them but neither seemed clogged_. Previous owner just did a top end 10ish hours ago and he was running 32:1 (way too rich imo). Im thinking he may have put the powervalve back wrong when he did the top end or maybe its gunked up from running too rich? Ill be pulling the right side powervalve cover off sometime this week but I was looking to get a few other opinions as well.

Thanks for the help

Check powervalve would be my opinion...

The 300s don't rev as high as a 250.. FYI

I would also start with the power valve. If the previous owner installed a spark arrester that uses a screen style, those screens can plug up quick, esp. at 32:1 and it will hurt top end power.

Too large of main jet, try a smaller one and see if it improves, it will behave like that if your main jet is way too big

32:1 is not too rich. More oil=more power/protection

No spark arrester on it, has fmf silencer. And Ill try a 170 main and see how it goes, maybe go lower (168 or 165). I think the pilot should be good, Ill check the needle and clip position tomorrow as well. When checking the powervalve I should just be able to take the side cover off behind the pipe and rev the bike on a stand to see if it moves? If its stuck should I just try and clean it and cycle the arm up and down with my hand?

Here's a video to show you how to remove the powervalve linkage:
https://youtu.be/k1XRvK_G14Y

Once that is done, your pipe is already removed and you should be able to feel if the powervalve is opening smooth or not.

If it is movbig smooth, maybe look at what your powervalve spring is adjusted to? Not sure if someone changed the spring pressure.

Another problem I had with my 2 stroke that helped, was repacking my silencer. When I got my bike it was really packed out and beat up. My bike felt a bit smooth once I cleaned and re packed it.

32:1 should be fine and is NOT "rich" it is actually LEAN since there is less fuel in that fuel:oil ratio

usually if a bike isn't running out as far as youd expect on top, check the PV action first

then move to jetting. If its gargling and smoking a bunch, too rich up top(needs smaller main). If it sounds like a frog and like its running out of steam, likely too lean (need larger main)

if the manual and stock jetting specs call for 60:1 and its been moved to 32:1, youll likely need a LARGER main jet since 32:1 contains less fuel per a given volume than 60:1 would.

also check crank seals and spray some ether around while its running to see if you are ingesting air from somewhere besides your air boot

I took my reeds out today and one had a chip in the bottom corner. Not huge but I could definitely see light coming through. Just ordered some new petals. Could this be adding to the problem?

The power valve springs on these can be changed to adjust the speed of the power valve opening. The heavier the spring the slower the open. You can also adjust the spring tension by square headed bolt in the center of the power valve spring cover located on the clutch side near/below the water pump.

Here ore the oem ktm part numbers for the springs:

54837072100 AUXILIARY SPRING HARD, GREEN
54837072000 AUXILIARY SPRING SOFT, RED
54637072300 AUXILIARY SPRING MID., YELLOW

Running the harder spring will cause it to not really rev out/open up as quickly as it should and could prevent it from opening at all.

Normally a fouling spark plug would be a good indication that your jetting is off or that the power valve is not opening.

Kreft Moto makes a key that replaces the square head adjuster screw making the spring preload adjustable on the fly.

It's real EZ to srew up a PVs timing during reassembly. Gear have marks on them to align and some are deceptively hard to see. Also the linkage pin may have fallen out leaving the PV inop. Also I've seen the linkage hardware not tighened or locktited properly with the same results. Quick check: pop off the left hand PV cover and observe the movement when revved.

What pipe is on the bike?
A gnarly or PCII 250 pipe will kill your over rev.
Shorty silencers will too

Check the powervalve like mentioned but that bike should rev fairly decent I just bought a new '16 and had a similar issue until I finally bought the Lectron and now is rev's better than any 250 I've been on. You may also try another needle, the JD red/blue combo did help mine a lot and the RM 250(NEDJ) needle is a great fix for that bike.

I replaced the reed petals today and dropped to a 168 main 38 pilot and it runs 10x better. I may drop to a 165 and change the needle next but Im very happy. I appreciate all the help, thanks guys.

I think it was mentioned earlier as well but the powervalve adjuster (Robertson drive brass dolly) will help the powerband also. I backed the adjuster back out to about 1 turn in from flush and it seemed to give me more overrev. Glad the leaner main helped that's what I was thinking as I just ran into this problem last week.
