Knees suck

Edited Date/Time 1/22/2012 3:23pm
Tomorrow is the day. I have a wake up call for an early AM ACL reconstruction. I'm so glad I am getting it fixed as I have gone way to long without the surgery but damn. I hate the night before a surgery. Fasting sucks. Right now chicken broth is beginning to sound like a good recipe.

My thoughts are with ya man. I've had 6 knee surgeries. The last two were ACL reconstructions 6 weeks apart in 1998. No problems ever since then. Good luck and push the PT harder than your therapist. Most are used to weak, crying, sedentary people. You'll do fine.Smile

I have to get both knees done but I'm going for my right one tomorrow. I have had 3 surgeries on my left but this is the first one on my right. They told me that I had to wait 4 months in between getting them both done. I think I'm going to wait unit around Sept. I got to get at least some riding in this summer. Especially since I have a brand new 07' KX 250 with maybe 15 minutes on it sitting in the garage. I'll use that for motivation. Honestly, I feel lucky that I am able to get it fixed. That wasn't always the case and living without an ACL sucks just as bad as tomorrow will.

Like you i have had many operations, lost count actually. You know the drill, it always goes better/faster for athletes than it does for the normal folks! Oh and i agree about the meds. Plus don't forget to save plenty for the next time you eat dirt..Wink

Hope your doc is as good as mine was 14 years ago. My 'new' knee is way better than my other one. Still doing everything, including playing soccer on a top tier team, at 51. Good luck.

Good luck with the ACL, I had mine done in Feb 2007, I was good unitl a little fall on the ice replacing the water heater in the RV and folded it up like a taco 3 weeks after sugury, then it miraculously felt better in March when I bought my first new bike since 1985.

And like raddad says keep the extra pills in your gear bag....incase. And if you dont have braces have the Dr perscribe them....mine did and insurance covered the whole thing for a custom Cti

Man! You must be an iron man! That is a painful surgery to have a full ACL reconstruction. I've had 17 total major surgeries. Rotator cuffs,Hernia, broken wrist, plates, screws, fused my right wrist etc. And I think the 2 ACL surgeries were the most painful. They used my patella tendon due to it's strength and the attachment ends have the bone. Takes longer to heal, but lasts and lasts. Stay away from hamstring grafts. Most of my friends that used that ended up stretching it or breaking it.

For my ACL I got a foot tendion I beleive it was from a cadaver, Dr said it was better than the synthetic.

Then to top it off on my 8 week visit he gave me a "presciption to ride". He put it on hospital letter head and made it look good...."no cleaning, just training and riding to make up for lost time on the track"

He was a good guy, and hope he does my achilese sugury if I end up needing it.

My buddy had a cadaver put in and his knee is better than it was before. The doc put in a beefy one for him .

nope i'm a woos but this really never bothered me till last week when i felt something "pop". after arguing with my Docs office all day they finally decided to see me Tuesday. i really think either a screw came out or broke or the cadaver ligament tore. somethings up??. back to the brace and cruthes till tuesday!!

I had the hamstring graft in 01 and have not had any problems with the knee or graft itself. My complaint is where they took the graft from on my hamstring. Definitely not as strong and does not feel the same as the other. Maybe 90%, my view now is why create another injury to fix an existing one. I did not go with the patella graft because of the issues with arthritis years after surgery. If it ever happens again I will be using a graft from a cadaver.

Both my ACL surgeries have been in the form of the cadavor ligament that way I didnt have 2 seperate places to heal from, like when you do the hamstring graph. Now with the one I just had it was just a scope that they did in order to get the pieces out and clean up what they needed to as well as drill some small holes in my femur where the pieces had broke off. Other than that I have been really lucky on the surgeries I have needed, this was number 3 along with no plates or screws in my body. (knock on wood). Best of luck to Flick and hope you have a speedy recovery bud!!

Mine was taken from my patela tendon (kneecap). Wasn't too bad. I was cleared to do anything I wanted after 3 months. The main thing is to attack the PT.

what did they attach the cadavor ligament with? My hamstring graft was attached with calcium screws that were absorbed completely after about 4 years. No issues at all and glad since I hear friends complaining of pain where their attachment hardward is located

X2 on that.

Good luck.

Push that PT till tears come down your face. Think of scar tissue like glue, the longer it has to set-up, the harder it is to break free.

I'm 35 and already have arthritis in my knees from injuries. Last one was moto, broke the top of my tib / fib in 10 places, after surgery was non-weight bearing for 3 months. It's still getting back to normal after 2 years.
