Can I ask you a serious question. I 100% mean no disrespect by it but I've asked it before on your fb page and got eaten alive by different people on the page.

I was always kinda curious why you weren't open more as far as open practice. I asked this about a year ago and was hit with replies like "you know how much it costs to run a track?" "He's busting his ass and you're complaining?" "you obviously don't know how much work it is" etc. None of which came from you but just random people who I think took my question the wrong way.

Listen, I wouldn't ask a question like that if I DIDNT want you open more. Almost every weekend I'm driving from Cedar Rapids to Walnut or Mt Carroll and I'd much rather be headed west on 30 to Garwin and handing you my money. Not even for the drive sake. You've got an awesome facility as I've made it a couple times. You could have a day job and work weekends, Not willing to risk the track prep costs in case of a bad turnout, not enough staff, or bigger reasons like insurance or land issues. I've never ran a facility obviously so I wouldn't know and I don't expect you to spew out your business or personal reasons. I'm just hoping as time comes, your facility is open a lot more. Or atleast hoping that's in your plans for the future.

I can't speak for any track owner but myself on this one, but I get asked the same question a lot. I feel that in our area you can be a practice track or a race track. We have tracks open 5 days a week and wonder why no one shows up on their race days. I had 2 tracks an hour apart. One in a town with 30k people, one in a town with 600k people. The small town track we have 1 race a month usually and a practice day. It's doing well. I gave up our lease on the track in a major town. Neat facility that had been around for years but it turned in to the track everyone practiced at and raced else where. I couldn't seem to "re-train" the customer base and got tired of wearing out my equipment running $20 practices 2 to 3 times a week.

Yeah sorry if anyone came at you the wrong way.. like you said it didnt come from me.

2016 we had around 8 open practice dates and 5 race dates.. for us that works.. I do have a full time job in the seed corn industry that requires me to spend a lot of time at work in the spring, all of July and fall during harvest. A lot of tracks are running hard in the fall when the weather is staying nice and I just cant do that due to my full time job.

Also scheduling comes into play.. our district has a 11 race series and if another track has a d22 points series race that is their weekend. No other district track can operate on that weekend, practice or any type of motocross event. We agreed on this to drive more racers to each series event rather than having 3 practice tracks running the same weekend as a d22 points race.

So between scheduling and my full time job we do what we can. I appreciate your support and hope you can head west on 30 more in the future! I do appreciate your input and keep an eye on our schedule for 2017.

The tracks are good, very fun place to ride. Jeremy Booher rebuilt ours this fall and usually builds the pit track in the video. Best builder around in my book. Everything is always build correct and holds up very well.

Wondering what others spend per year on their track? I figure I averaged $3500 or so on my little 6 lane, 1:10, 3 acre track. Usually $1500+ in the Spring for jump redesign and berm rework, then another $1000 for new sand/sawdust throughout the year, and at least another Grand for parts/fuel for my old POS tractor and watering rig. It was a pretty low budget operation, and I put way more hours of labor in than I did riding.

I coulda bought a lot of laps at Hangtown for $3500. Mike Sexton used to tell me for $3500 a year, me and my boy could ride Argyll and Club Moto any time we wanted. Smile Still nothing like having your own track though. Many times at the end of a long day, I'd walk around the track with my boy - a cold beer in hand, picking out rocks, and talking of nothing important.

Nice sentiment at the end, got t remember that's what it is all about.

I have been trying to stay away from this thread, just makes me jealous knowing I'll never have anything like any of these awesome paces. Keep up the good work everybody!

Hey man, giving actual reasons why the track is operating the way it is, I cant ask for a better reply than that and I appreciate it. I was always wondering why, and often get asked by moto folks when I mention I'm from Iowa. From a business standpoint with the district, it makes sense. As dumb as this may sound I'm actually glad to hear you have a job. It seems like every time someone puts something together with no outside income, they only have what's initially brought in, and a bad month leads to immediate failure. IMX Arena in Dyersville being one of them. If it's working for ya, keep it up! Iowa needs your facility around for a long long time!

Do any of you get bored at your track or bored riding alone? Do you still go out and ride public tracks?
Not my track, but a track that a friend owns nearby that I can ride anytime I want. The simple answer is yes. I can't stand riding alone there anymore. It's fun for the first lap or two but after that I just can't stand it. If I have my girlfriend there taking pictures or someone timing me and pushing me, though, that's different. I could stay out there all day.

And if I'm riding with anyone at all, I could turn lap after lap, switching up sections and trying new things. That I love with a passion, especially with someone slightly faster than me.

Most of the time I am pumped to ride my place but i'd be lying if I said there wasn't a couple times that I went out there strictly for the exercise, lol. I have it set up to ride both directions, that helps keep it fresh, it's like having 2 tracks. And the most important thing is I have great GREAT dirt! When the moisture is right it is absolutely amazing! Maybe someday I will invest in a water system so I can keep it right all the time.

I finally got some rain so I did some tilling and took some fresh pics.

Thank you sir i agree it is very sick! Dirt is a mix of sand and clay with one section pure sand.
Rocks??? boy howdy i have hand raked the entire 1.2 mile finished track 6 times to get everything down to pebble size so the track has no rocks ok a few small ones kick up still i have ripped it about a foot deep removed all the big rocks some as large as a quad that with all the hand raking has left it really nice. I rip it about 6 inches to ride so i never get deep enough to uncover any more big ones still have a couple sections that require more maintenance as they have a shit load of rocks but they are small and i stay on it. .

No water yet though i have a spot i'm clearing to form a lake/reservoir and will eventually get to a watering system.
It has taken me two years to build the track by myself with just this little tractor with a loader attachment several 3 point hitch attachments and about a dozen hand rakes so far.

I'm 60 so i just take things slow and easy and am pretty amazed at what i have accomplished in two years working with a small tractor and only about 4 hours a day. The only cash i have spent aside from fuel and tractor maintenance is $5500.00 to a professional track builder to come out and build all the jumps. I didn't feel comfortable i could get them right and safe so it was money well spent he did an outstanding job everyone who has ridden here has commented on how well the jump faces and landing are.
It was a challenge for sure but once i decided to do it i was all in and wow is it a blast to ride Pro lap times are 2 min flat to 2:00 to 2:04.
Track flows like butter and you will use all the gears in the gearbox.

Very nice. Cool

I remember when we first built our track and the dirt looked just like yours, but a few more rocks. Tongue we never got the rake out to get it quite as nice as you've done with yours, but we did get anything bigger than a golf ball. Same type of soil as well, with mixed clay and sand washes in the valleys.
We never did get water, so it's hard packed now and has gotten really rough. We stopped grooming it in 2007. Blink

Hey thanks! I finished my lineman apprenficeship a year ago and I'm on call 24/7 for power outages so I've got to live within a certain distance from the shop. Unfortunately it doesn't get me too far into the country to find a little more land.i had planned to pour a foundation and have a house moved to it but that plan fell through due to the seller of that home so I didn't end up making an offer yet. I'm expecting my second child in February so that kinda throws a wrench in my time too as feb is closing fast. I live 3 hours from Chicago tho! That's not too bad of a drive for some mx, BBQ and beers!

I was fortunate enough to grow up on a farm in Pennsylvania, and my dad let me put a track in the "worst" field he had. It was a cow pasture, but a lot of people carved laps here over the years. Locally, Branden Jesseman, Gene Stull, Davey Yezek, Jimmy Evans, Mike Jones and Chad Sanner. Dan Pastor also invited the Moto XXX crew out a few times to film for their videos, which brought guys like Travis Preston, Josh Demuth and Ryan Clark out. Miss those days!
