I have just picked up this 83 125 that seems in fair condition

It has had two owners from new has done two seasons racing and has then pretty much sat in the shed

I would like to know if anyone ha any ideas about mods or improvements particularly in the seat dept
Tom Morgan seems to be the man for the engine but I am open to ideas

I believe Maxpower has one of those and his looks to be setup really well. I'm sure he'll be able to answer your questions.

That bike is too good condition as a starting point for you.

I always liked those bikes. The KX's were just different, with the number plate/rear fender and single side radiator!

Nice bike to start for sure! I'll be following.

Maybe a 1984/5 or 1986 seat foam can be modded to fit the pan somehow to get it up the tank a bit.

I have a question: I see the front brake hose runs inside the fork. Was this before Honda had the patent for that? How long was the patent good for? I noticed the other brands eventually started running their front brake lines inside as well. Was it 20 years 1985-2005ish???

The brake hose routing patent only applied to upsidedown forks. Everyone ran the hose to the inside on conventional forks.

Do Pit Replica for the cover Mick. I made the mistake of getting a cover from another company. I hate it so much it makes me want to spit on the ground every time I look at my bike. I'm going to take it off and order one from Pit Replica myself.
Spin the bolts in this bike as if you were working on a RC car. It's a old KX,not a Honda. Things strip easy. As in the drain plug and seat bolts. But who ever takes those bolts off anyway?
It doesn't look ridden out. The pegs look strait and if the side stickies are still on it can't be totally abused I'm thinking. Look good around the swing arm pivot area of the frame to be sure everything looks good. Now is the time
I have a stiffer shock spring for you from a 250, You'll need it

I haven't found a need for more front foam. Changing the top triple clamp to move the bars up made all the difference in the world

Max

The foam would be as much for looks as well as safety in a nose dive situation

I am also thinking of a blue seat I have found a couple of clamps on flea bay

Where can I find Tom Morgan to speak to him about the engine ?

Its possible you may want to replate thr cylinder. Keep an eye out for a 84 head and cylinder. The water jacket is much larger. The ports are different too but that doesnt matter if uou are going to tweak it. Eric Gorr knows Kawis too. I just wanted Tom Morgan to do it because of his past experience with factory Kawasaki.
Im not fond of a saftey seat on this bike.. I think it looks like an after thought and makes a goody looking bike look goofier

I will start collecting a few things first before I tear anything apart
I have a project or two that I am finishing up and I want to get some heat in the workshop before it gets cold

So having done a few now I have a bit better understanding on how I would like to aproach this

I will be looking for a set of 88 top clamps seat cover and will then also hunt for a rad cover I will then take to local track and see what I have Or not !

I think the 83 KX is one of the best bikes to restore even though it wont be cheap to do,it is such a unique bike and awesome when restored. If I was going to do a KX 125 or 250 it would be a 1983 model hands down and then a 79 model would be my second choice.

fairly sure that is a 1982 KX 80.. I was fortunate enough to race an 82 in 82 and an 83 in 83.. I loved those bikes!! it is weird that in 83, kawasaki kept the number plate rear fender on the big bikes but minis went back traditional. somebody please correct me if I'm wrong?

You should consider adding gussets to the frame. Once you see the frame stripped of all its parts you will see why i suggest to strengthen it.
Take a bunch of pics before you disassemble it. You don't want to have to be grinding off gussets you added because they are in the way of a part that has to go back on. My swingarm fit could not have been any closer

Shock has oil in it but that's about it

I think I may look for an alternative I have started taking to bits and have some hardware ready for replaying
I am having the wheels respoked as well

There is a 79 on ebay at the moment used to belong to the son of the drummer from Led Zep

Jason Bonham, really into his Moto, met him a few times while I worked at ride mx in Stratford, nice guy. Signed a sheet of paper for my mate Matt who's a massive Led Zeppelin fan.

If you are going to relace the wheels, find hubs from a 84 or 85. They are strait pull spokes. Not only are they stronger wheels but are much much easier to lace.
If you cant find a shock ill give you my stock shock. I was keeping it as back up but i dont see myself putting that thing back on my bike

That brings back memories of around that time! Think Jason was a really good rider also, I think he may have even came 2nd in the British Youth Championships one year. His Dad by accounts was a top man, think he even supplied a brand new bike as a raffle prize in the clubs they raced in- bet that made some kid and his family happy!
Think Jason also had a pretty full on tricked out Mugen in his later years of racing, saw some pics of it somewhere. Also seem to recall that he did some parade laps for Team Green back then at the Farleigh GP, may have been around 1980- think it was a water cooled KX before they became water cooled with a bundle of special/ factory bits!

His Dad kind of was involved in Team Green and helped make it successful, may have sort of sponsored/set up the team or something and got alot of top kids rides which they may not have got otherwise. Think he helped make it quite high profile for around that time.
Think I saw that Jason is (or was) invoved in helping underpriviledged kids with his organisation that gets them out on bikes and tries to keep them on the straight and narrow, giving them bikes to focus on. Think he may have dedicated/ named it after his Dad. Great Moto family.

I'm not following you. Are you saying you don't want to spend too much buying 84 hubs? You will wish you did when you are at your bench trying to lace them. It's so much easier with strait pull spokes
If you come to NYC I'll send you home with a nice clean shock . Has a stiffer spring on it too. I may have a Ti 4.8 YZ spring around,I'll have to check

I have a Noleen shock. I thought the stock shock worked well until I rode with my new one
Rieger shocks aren't common here. I've never even heard of it. How much do they cost? You still haven't told me when you are coming out to visit.
I have a rear hub for you too if you want. Ill look for the Ti spring later tonight. I had bought it for my Noleen shock but its too long. The stock spring rate for those bikes are the same as a modern KX85. Chances are the drain plug is stripped. Or at least compromised. I bought a pack of HeliCoil inserts and have extra
