R&D and the top level of the sport is understandable, 15K bike at the amateur level is part of what is driving down the sports participation...I believe that is why what Robbins did a few years ago was so popular...10 year old bike technology is fine at this level....heck even Ken Roczen is showing what an older platform is capable of, sans suspension....
where is the point of diminishing return?
40 guys about the same speed on the gate, lots of people watching,it is moto heaven.
Edit ** just realized this Moto hasn't happened yet, my bad!
Pit Row
Have you even lifted today?
yes the plastic is the same, however, the chassis and motor have physically been changed over the past 8 years. Unfortunately the changes are not visually as drastic as KTM Kawi and Honda so people assume nothing has been changed.
Not only that, but just because a design that is brand new ground up doesnt equate to better.
reality is the RMZ chassis are really good and has been good. I've ridder most brands lately and an RMZ 450 cant be touched in corners
Breaking down necessary tech, suspension...yamaha 10 yr old tech with refinements. front air...any advantage? Agree FI for 4 strokes was a big improvement, every current 2 stroke at LL using a carb, very old tech. Brakes, pretty old technology. Engine, mostly refinements other then the yzf and 17 crf. All the other cool electronic stuff is neat, but imo not necessary for a good rider to be compitive, even less so for a slow rider or pro.
New technology is used by mfg to give you motivation to buy a new bike, not win a race. Having to pay for a racing family for 6 years, I def understand what an family with a midclass income is willing to spend on a sport, chasing a dream to be a pro is probably less then 5 % of those who still race mx and all together different.
Plenty of other threads that point to cost of bikes and maintenance contributing to less racers.
Is the sport growing, because more people watch TV and there are less riders?
All fun...just discussing something other the politics
Looks like a storm is headed there in time for last moto maybe.
All good, and a good discussion, for sure.
