Looking into getting a skid plate, seems this model yz450 has lots of exposure to the cases in the front/bottom. Anyone found a good model that doesnt have to be removed for an oil change? Cycra makes plastic ones (they look cool and there are many color options), and of course there are the aluminum ones as well. Just dont have a clue which ones work the best. Will be used for mx (no woods) and little to no rocks will ever come into play either.

Thanks in advance.

I have the acerbic and don't like it. The cycra skidplate looks nice though I should have got that one.

I have heard of the plastic ones flexing when hitting something and slicing the radiator hose at the water pump.

I believe it was Acerbis and on KTM's but it's worth taking into consideration.

I have a cycra one on my 2014 450. My local track is a rock pit. I have never had a issue

Lightspeed MX makes a super clean one for the YZFs! If they work for the Star Yamaha boys then they'd be fine for me Smile

I have a Cycra on my '14. I have no complaints, but I don't beat on it too much. You do have to remove it to change the oil. It may be possible to put a hole in it to drain the oil, but because of the location and orientation of the drain bolt I'm not sure how well it would work. Removal is only 2 bolts so it's not a big deal to me.

I have the works connection guide plate. I like it but wish I got the one with the water pump protection. You can change the oil with plate installed.

Only downside is mud build up. But I stuffed some foam inside and it's always clean when mud riding. Polishes up really nice too!

Thanks for all the responses. I believe the Cycra will be what I go with. They happen to make a lightning gold one that will look good on my bike too - which is always a factor for me. Smile

Good choice, aluminum is waaaay overkill for mx. Also supposedly adds a little rigidity to your frame. (just what I have been told)

I know people who run cycra plastic plates in rocky hare scrambles around me. I wouldn't risk it but they haven't had problems yet in these conditions.

Aluminum would definitely be overkill for where I ride. Heck I really dont even run the risk of a stray rock getting in there.....probably dont need any protection at all, Better safe than sorry though.

I want something like this for mine....

Can't seem to find anything for the 14-17. Everything for that model is the huge honking guard that looks ridiculous.
