Tuff block cover solution

Edited Date/Time 1/27/2012 2:05pm
Just was reading the LB welcome slurpy post, and I saw a mention of an issue with the tuff blocks not being secure.

Why not just have three velcro straps sewn to each one that can be strapped at the bottom. They'd still be easy enough to take off and put on each weekend, and it would help secure them enough that most times they wouldn't snag on the bike.

If not that, why not make them a full bag that covers all the way around the block and then the open flap door secures with velcro?

Actually, I think they should leave them loose. It provides more excitement for the circus. I think they should grab members from the crowd during one of their intermissions (of course this would be sponsored so they can make more coin and cut out another race) where people get nominated to be able to stand in the whoops and throw tuff blocks at the riders during the main.

Bikes would still hook them.

So rather than having it snarl up in the offending rider's wheel, we have a tuff block being dragged around or onto the track and/or endangering other riders as well

IF ANYTHING, they should use such a thin material that only a small piece will tear off.

(but they'd probably look like shit because they're so thin)

Do they really need covers? I thought it got started when they were covering hay bales to keep them together. Aren't they just ads?

You would think there would be an inexpensive way to screenprint right over the plastic shell

Bobby has it right, just don't hit them.

If you put the ads right on the tuff block covers, they would look pretty bad quickly. At least with the covers, you can make them look better whenever you want.

Also agree that straps would be a bad idea. You don't want to drag the whole block around the track.

Yes, if you mold into or print directly onto the tuff block, they'd look like shit after a couple races and aren't cheap to replace (especially if logo molded into or printed on it)

Unfortunately in my humble noob opinion they are a necessary evil. They are great for rider safety but are to valuable for sponsor space since they are almost in every shot on tv or photos. I agree with the velcro system or a sleeve system to secure them better.

I suppose just having them a solid color with no ads would be too much to ask. How many good finishes have been lost to those things? Not to mention damage to the bikes.

Exactly, just goes to show how much money is put into branding by sponsors to get their products out.

You willing to pay $100 a ticket (for the cheap seats) to make up for the lost revenue?

Love people who think it's cheap to put on a SX and think that no one (other that the riders themselves, of course) are allowed to make any money

Didn't say that Dave, just seems like the things are an on-going hazard.

Thats not what I meant at all. All I meant was that it is so important to have sponsors on them that I don't believe much will be done about it. When you think about all the sponsors that are in SX and the competition between them you gotta take all the advantages you can afford. Thats why they have operating capital. I am just like everyone else and would like to see them secured better thats all.

You're right, that's been working pretty well so far. No point in making any changes.

It can be a tricky situation. Don't hit them but ya gotta have them. The sport needs the money but they pose a danger at the same time. I just hope it doesn't turn out being a deal like in other sports where nothing is done till an athlete is seriously injured.

Dragging tuff blocks out onto or around the track is more dangerous

So's parking a boat in the in-field and they seemed to have solved that problem.

Thats true. But securing them to the track themselves could be tricky too. However they are way better then haybales.

Jesus Christ just use a cardboard box and print on the side of it.

Or use that skin shit they use on the side of trucks, RV's, etc...

I'll be waiting for my royality check.

They used boats in lieu of tuff blocks?

I missed that one

San Francisco just took it's shirt off

maybe they could use some of those stupid little yellow plastic sticks.

Just need covers that self destruct if they leave contact with the block.

Make them out of concrete and spray paint the ads on them. They would be pretty durable too and hard to drag around the track.

Wow, what a great idea, but this is professional racing and stuff happens. As I stated a week ago it’s a safety issue. Name a governing body other then the AMA that would allow this to continue? A rider should not be put in the position as Josh Grant was and others have been. If Grant had lost A1 due to the tuff block a number of you would be calling for heads to roll. The solution is simple, put the graphics on the tuff blocks. How many companies make graphics in the MX industry? I’m sure one or two of them would love the added business. What about the cost? By the time you factor out the cover that has to be printed on, the cost should be less.

How about those worried about hitting the covers prepare the bikes so the axles wouldn't grab the covers? Any off-roader knows how to reduce the chance of roots or branches grabbing important parts of a bike.

Just put a few strips of 200 MPH tape across the axle bolt...How hard was that?

You're wrong.
The cover costs far less than the tuff block
and a slip cover is going to be far less than a stick on decal, in both time and materials.

Maybe auto racing should take out walls because cars hit them?
