Except the semi humour around here, it's refreshing someone is actually interested in riding...

I will for sure try to soak up some info since I would kill to improve my technique...

Normally I try and carve the face of the jump while sitting farther back on the seat, then just keep your weight to one side of the bike and let the bike do most of the work. I find turndown whips to be more fun, thats just my opinion though.

I have to add this......I have a riding bud who, all he ever wanted to learn was how to whip it over a jump. After 25 years he can through a decent whip for a 50 year old, but cannot turn, start or go through whoops to save his life! And yes, he is a complete asshole! ...I"m happy if I remember to pull a tear off mid flight!

I haven't started practicing the whip yet. I decided to practice crashing first. I've almost mastered that then I'm moving on to the whip..

Hang in there bud, they will come around one day.

There used to be a local riding that rocked the Pro Circuit gear, graphics and mimicked RV when he was killing it in the 250s. This kid could indeed thro a good whip considering his speed. It was funny watching him getting passed but he never would not whip it over a jump. C class hero all day long.

Maybe the whip itself is not the biggest thing but the landing can be painful! I think its important that the Frontwheel touch the Ground first in the direction you want to ride. Then the Backend follows the Frontwheel.

It ever looks easier than it is. Be careful!

I know everyone talks about whipping is mainly for looks/style etc and that riders should put more emphasis on cornering. I get it. And while I agree with that in general, I do want to point out that there is a lot of value in gaining the ability to better control the action of the bike in the air and being able to hit jumps at various angles on the face. It's hard to ride fast when you have to take cornering lines such that you square every jump up so that your are straight going off the face. There are many track obstacles that the shortest and fastest lines are to take the inside of the corner and go off the jump face at an angle - which puts you into a natural whip. So I think understanding how to whip and doing it well can be a great help in cornering and taking the shortest route around the track thus making you faster. Me personally, I can't whip for crap - intentionally or unintentionally. I've ridden all my life (40 years), but just started riding tracks within the last 6 years and I ride tracks maybe once a month. I can clear all of the jumps on most tracks, but I struggle to do it as fast as I would like because I suck at whipping and can't take the shortest lines around the track - look like a total goonfest. I practice cornering all the time and like that as much as jumping, but I just can't get it figured out on how to bring the rear end back. I can throw my rear tire out fine, I just can't figure out how to get it back - which yes I know is dangerous (trust me I know). I just always make sure my front tire comes down first and is pointed in the direction I need to be going. I've swapped a few times, but have pulled it out. Anyway, for me it's a constant work in progress - and I'm not just doing it to look cool. I think there is real value in executing the technique.

Im whipping to the right. I start off heading up the jump at an angle ( / ) like so. As I start to take off, I lean to the left but it never goes really far. Its a 50ft tabletop. Do you guys pull the throttle side of the bar towards your chest or do you push the bike over to the right? Please help, Im only getting the ass end out a little bit. Im getting frustrated!

Thanks!
Let me guess......you don't race. I do hope you lift bro.

Whatever floats your boat but my biggest focus is not crashing and going home in one piece. I seriously DGAF about whipping and scrubbing.

Seen too many out of shape racers who focus on this nonsense instead of essential stuff like training.

I don't have any professional practice riders as friends but I can only guess how many of these riders (not racers) work on these tricks.

He seems to suggest mainly using your legs. I can't whip but one thing that I'm not sure has been mentioned is to gas it before landing. The centrifugal force of the spinning wheel should greatly help the bike straighten up - riders that can whip often mention this. Do whatever you find fun and enjoy yourself. Just be safe and take small steps.
